A method is presented in this paper to analyze the dynamic response behavior of suspended building structures. The effect of semi-rigid connections that link suspended floors with their supporting structure on structural performance is investigated. The connections, like the restrains in non-structural suspended components, are designed as semi-rigid to avoid pounding and as energy dissipation components to reduce structural response. Parametric study is conducted to assess the dynamic characteristics of suspended building structures with varying connection stiffness and suspended mass ratios. Modal analysis is applied to identify the two distinct sets of vibration modes, pendulum and bearing, of a suspended building structure. The cumulative modal mass is discussed to ensure the accuracy in applying the method of response spectrum analysis by SRSS or CQC modal combination. Case studies indicate that a suspended building having semi-rigid connections and proper suspended mass ratios can avoid local pounding failure and reduce seismic response.

This paper reports the dynamic analysis of energy consumption for an office building by heat resistance-capacitance method. If a building is divided into several wall components and the wall components is replaced by one thermal capacitance and several thermal resistances, the building becomes an electric circuit. By solving the simultaneous equations of the circuit, the dynamic heat transfer characteristics and the energy consumption rate of the building were predicted. Accuracy of modified BIN method was evaluated by the present resistance-capacitance method. The result shows that modified BIN method overpredicts the heating load of the office building 15%. Annual energy consumptions of equipments(fan, boiler, chiller) for various ventilating control system(CAV, VAV, FCU+VAV, FCU+CAV) were compared. FCU+CAV shows the minimum annual energy consumption.
A new inflow turbulence generation method and a combined dynamic SGS model recently developed by the authors were applied to evaluate the wind effects on 508 m high Taipei 101 Tower. Unlike the majority of the past studies on large eddy simulation (LES) of wind effects on tall buildings, the present numerical simulations were conducted for the full-scale tall building with Reynolds number greater than $10^8$. The inflow turbulent flow field was generated based on the new method called discretizing and synthesizing of random flow generation technique (DSRFG) with a prominent feature that the generated wind velocity fluctuations satisfy any target spectrum and target profiles of turbulence intensity and turbulence integral length scale. The new dynamic SGS model takes both advantages of one-equation SGS model and a dynamic production term without test-filtering operation, which is particular suitable to relative coarse grid situations and high Reynolds number flows. The results of comparative investigations with and without generation of inflow turbulence show that: (1) proper simulation of an inflow turbulent field is essential in accurate evaluation of dynamic wind loads on a tall building and the prescribed inflow turbulence characteristics can be adequately imposed on the inflow boundary by the DSRFG method; (2) the DSRFG can generate a large number of random vortex-like patterns in oncoming flow, leading to good agreements of both mean and dynamic forces with wind tunnel test results; (3) The dynamic mechanism of the adopted SGS model behaves adequately in the present LES and its integration with the DSRFG technique can provide satisfactory predictions of the wind effects on the super-tall building.

This paper presents an analysis of nonlinear response of the seismically isolated structure against earthquake excitation to evaluate isolation performances of a rubber bearing. In the analysis of the vibration of building, the building is modeled by lumped mass system where the restoring force is considered as linear, bilinear and trilinear. Fundamental equations of motion are derived for the base isolated structure, and hysteretic and nonlinear-elastic characteristics are considered for a numerical calculation. The excitation levels are magnified fur the recorded strong earthquake motions in order to examine dynamic stability of the structure. Seismic responses (of the building are compared fur the each restoring force type. As a result, it is shown that the effect of the motion by the nonlinear response of the building is comparatively not so large from a seismic design standpoint. The responses of the isolated structures reduce sufficiently and controled the motion of the building well in a practical range. By increasing the acceleration of the earthquake, the yielding of the farce was occurred in the concrete and steel frame, which shows the necessity of the exact nonlinear dynamic analysis.

In this paper, the ASCE 7 equivalent static approach for seismic design of non-structural elements is critically evaluated based on the measured floor acceleration data, theory of structural dynamics, and linear/nonlinear dynamic analysis of three-dimensional building models. The analysis of this study on the up-to-date database of the instrumented buildings in California clearly reveals that the measured database does not well corroborate the magnitude and the profile of the floor acceleration as proposed by ASCE 7. The basic flaws in the equivalent static approach are illustrated using elementary structural dynamics. Based on the linear and nonlinear dynamic analyses of three-dimensional case study buildings, it is shown that the magnitude and distribution of the PFA (peak floor acceleration) can significantly be affected by the supporting structural characteristics such as fundamental period, higher modes, structural nonlinearity, and torsional irregularity. In general, the equivalent static approach yields more conservative acceleration demand as building period becomes longer, and the PFA distribution in long-period buildings tend to become constant along the building height due to the higher mode effect. Structural nonlinearity was generally shown to reduce floor acceleration because of its period-lengthening effect. Torsional floor amplification as high as 250% was observed in the building model of significant torsional irregularity, indicating the need for inclusion of the torsional amplification to the equivalent static approach when building torsion is severe. All these results lead to the conclusion that, if permitted, dynamic methods which can account for supporting structural characteristics, should be preferred for rational seismic design of non-structural elements.

Yangjindang house, which is located in Sang-ju province of South Korea, is one of the special Hanok structures dated back to Joseon dynasty. This study aims to examine structural safety of the Yangjindang wood frame building considering dynamic parameters such as the natural frequency and damping ratio. The numerical model of the wood frame building is implemented using Midas Gen, especially the wood joint where column and beam were connected. The behavior of the actual frame building was compared with the modeling results. In addition, structure responses such as shear force, axial force, flexural moment and deflections were calculated and compared with the allowable limits. Numerical results show that, generally, despite of some local members shear failure, Yangjindang's structural response does not exceed the limitation according to current standards.
Dynamic characteristics of tall building structures with double negative stiffness damped outriggers (2NSDO) are parametrically studied using the theoretical formula. Compared with one negative stiffness damped outrigger (1NSDO), 2NSDO can achieve a similar maximal modal damping ratio with a smaller negative stiffness ratio. Besides, the 2NSDO can improve the maximum achievable damping ratio to about 30% with less consumption of an outrigger damping coefficient compared with the double conventional damped outriggers (2CDO). Besides, the responses of structures with 2NSDO under fluctuating wind load are investigated by time-history analysis. Numerical results show that the 2NSDO is effective in reducing structural acceleration under fluctuating wind load, being more efficient than 1NSDO.

High-rise building for dwelling has many factors to be considered in structural aspects. In particular, the higher the building, the bigger the lateral loads such as wind and earthquake due to its dynamic characteristics. Unlike the wind load, the earthquake load, even if the shape of the structures are similar, depends on structural characteristics and it is difficult to predict. For an apartment building, the water tank in the penthouse, due to its heavy weight, changes the behavior of a building when the earthquake occurs. The purpose of this study is to determine how the water tank affects the behavior of an apartment building when earthquake occurs. Dynamic analysis was accomplished on two cases - 1) water tank is considered 2) water tank is not considered - to understand how it affects the behavior of a high-rise apartment building. Structural design was accomplished to understand how the water tank and the peak acceleration affects each structural member. The effect of the water tank on the response of structure was large. Elsewhere the water tank has no effect on the design of a strutural member. However some structural members were affected when the peak acceleration of an earthquake is 0.4g.

The purpose of this study is to obtain basic data for making performance criteria about the structural safety of lightweight dry wall later by examining types and characteristics of horizontal load acting on the wall. The subjects applying horizontal load to the wall are human and objects. The types of horizontal load are classified as static load and dynamic load depending on the difference of acting time. The magnitude of horizontal load "0.25kN/㎡" defined by KBC 2009 has no significant meaning since it is the unsubstantial nominal load. The result of examining types and characteristics of horizontal load is as follows. (1) Static load by human needs to have more systematic investigation including differences in wall hardness and human weight. (2) Dynamic load by human needs to raise the significance of study result by increasing the number of subjects. (3) Dynamic load by objects needs to accumulate the load specific data for various load subjects considering real situations.

Earthquake is a natural disaster accompanied by damage of human and properties caused by the ground motion, crustal movements, faults as well as tidal wave. The earthquake is known to occur mostly in earthquake-prone areas and the Korean Peninsula is known to be relatively safe in terms of geological characteristics. In order to withstand on severe environmental dynamic random load such as an earthquake, the large structure need to be designed to withstand the anticipated seismic tremor. The seismetic design is essential for building structures, bridges, and large structures which is handles explosive gases. Thus, the necessity of earthquake resistant analysis for large structure is growing and the capability of dynamic analysis should be obtained. In this thesis, dynamic responses of a high building(height 60m, width 18) which subjected to random earthquake load are presented which responses are derived using dynamic analysis methods such as response spectrum analysis, mode superposition and direct integration. Each results are also compared to review the merit of each methods.
