  • One of important inconsistencies in the six-equation model predictions has been found to be the force experienced by a single bubble placed in a convergent stream of liquid. Various sets of governing equations yield different amount of forces to hold the bubble stationary in a convergent nozzle. By using the first order potential flow theory, it is found that the six-equation model can not be used to estimate the force experienced by a deformed bubble. The theoretical value of the particle stress of a bubble in a convergent nozzle flow has been found to be a function of the Weber number when bubble distortion is allowed. This force has been calculated by using different sets of governing equations and compared with the theoretical value. It is suggested in this study that the bubble size distribution function can be used to remove the presented inconsistency by relating the interfacial variables with different moments of the bubble size distribution function. This study also shows that the inconsistencies in the thermal-hydraulic governing equation can be removed by mechanistic modeling of the phasic interface.

  • Heat transfer model and energy dissipation rate were investigated to examine the heat transfer mechanism in bubble columns with continuous operation. The energy dissipation rate($E_D$) obtained from the unsteady state heat transfer model based on the surface renewal theory was significantly small, comparing with the hydrodynamic energy dissipation rate($P_v$) calculated from the overall hydrodynamic energy balance based on the behaviors and holdups of gas and liquid phases in the column. It was found from these results that the energy dissipation rate based on the surface renewal theory is independent of the hydrodynamic energy dissipation rate obtained from the overall hydrodynamic energy balance in the bubble column, in considering their mechanism. The different two energy dissipation rates were correlated in terms of operating variables within this experimental conditions, respectively.

  • The main advantage of dissolved air flotation (DAF) in water treatment process is the small dimension compared with conventional gravity sedimentation and it can be basically reduced by the separation zone performed with the short solid-liquid separation time. Fine bubbles make such a short time possible to carry out solid from liquid separation as a collector on the course of water treatment. Therefore, the dimension of separation zone in DAF process is practically determined by the rise velocity of the bubble-floc agglomerates, which is a floc attached with several bubbles. To improve flotation velocity and particle removal efficiency in DAF process, many researchers have tried to attach bubbles as much as possible to flocs. Therefore, the maximum number of attached bubble on a floc and the rise velocity of bubble-floc agglomerates considered as the most important factor to design the separation zone of flotation tank in DAF process was simulated based on the population balance theory. According to the simulation results of this study, the size and volume concentration of bubble influenced on the possible number of attached bubble on a floc. The agglomerates attached with smaller bubble was more sensitive to hydraulic loading rate in the separation zone of DAF process. For the design of a high rate DAF process applied over surface loading 40 m/hr. it is required a precise further study on the variation of bubble property and behavior including in terms of bubble size distribution.

  • Acoustic backscattering from a buble column in water was studied theoretically and experimentally. For theoretical analysis a general scattering theory was used by assuming the bubble column to be lumped element scatterer which can be characterized by its shape, void fraction and dimensions. When the void fraction is less than 1% and the incident frequency is higher than individual bubble resonance frequencies, the experimental results show that the acoustic backscattering from a bubble column depends mainly on the void fraction rather than the individual bubble sizes. It was also theoretically and experimentally observed that the acoustic backscattering levels were increased and their peaks moved to the lower frequency regin by raising the void fraction of bubble column.

  • In multiphase flne the bubble size and velocity. To achieve this, one of approaches is to utilize laser phase-Doppler anemometry. However, it was found that the second order refraction has great impact on PDA sizing method when the relative refractive index of media is less than one. In this paper, the problem of second order refraction is investigated and a model of phase-size correlation to eliminate the measurement errors is introduced for bubble sizing. As a result, the model relates the assumption of single scattering mechanism in conventional phase-Doppler anemometry. The results of simulations based on this new model by using Generalized Lorenz Mie Theory (GLMT) are compared with those based on the conventional method. An optimization method for accurately sizing air-bubble in water has been suggested.

  • Two typical impact loadings, shock wave and gas bubble pulse, due to UNDEX(UNDerwater EXplosion), should be considered together for the closest response analysis of structure subjected to UNDEX to a reality. Since these two impact loadings have different response time bands, however, their response characteristics of structure are different from each other. It is impossible to consider these effectively under the current computational environment and the mathematical model has not yet been developed. Whereas Hicks model approximates the fluid-structure interaction due to gas bubble pulse as virtual mass effect, treating the flow by the response of gas bubble after shock wave as incompressible ideal fluid contrary to the compressible flow due to shock wave, Geers-Hunter model could make the closest response analysis of structure under UNDEX to a real one as a mathematical model considering the fluid-structure interaction due to shock wave and gas bubble pulse together using acoustic wave theory and DAA(Doubly Asymptotic Approximation). In this study, the application and effectiveness of integrated dynamic response analysis of submerged structure was examined with the analysis of the shock wave and gas bubble pulse together.

  • In this paper, an improved four-node Reissner-Mindlin plate-bending element with enhanced assumed strain field is presented for the analysis of isotropic and laminated composite plates. To avoid the shear locking and spurious zero energy modes, the transverse shear behavior is improved by the addition of a new enhanced shear strain based on the incompatible displacement mode approach and bubble function. The "standard" enhanced strain fields (Andelfinger and Ramm, 1993) are also employed to improve the in-plane behaviors of the plate elements. The four-node quadrilateral element derived using the first-order shear deformation theory is designated as "14EASP". Several applications are investigated to assess the features and the performances of the proposed element. The results are compared with other finite element solutions and analytical solutions. Numerical examples show that the element is stable, invariant, passes the patch test, and yields good results especially in highly distorted regimes.

  • Water jet nozzle for LCD has been used as a wet cleaning process in many industries. It is necessary for the nozzle to consider cleaning effect and flux. In this paper, we applied the bubble dynamic theory(Rayleight-Plesset equation) to improve the cleaning efficiency. Generally, Rayleigh-Plesset equations for cavitation bubbles are used in analyzing computer simulation for caviting flows. Burst of bubbles causes potential energies and we can use these energies to remove organic and inorganic compounds on the LCD. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the bubble generations and axiomatic design by computational fluid dynamics(CFD). By comparing the weight matrix of neural networks to the design matrix of axiomatic design, we propose methods to verify designs objectively. The optimal solution could be deduced by the regression analysis using the design parameters.

  • Although the two types of currencies compete, the possibility of a virtual currency price bubble is diagnosed by assuming an economic model with currencies (won, virtual currency) that are intrinsically worthless. The won is supplied by the central bank to achieve the price stability target, while the supply of virtual currency increases by a fixed number. According to the basic price theory equation, as a simple proposition, cryptocurrency prices form a Martin Gale process [Schilling and Uhlig, 2019, p.20]. Based on the existing theoretical proposition, we applied the variance ratio verification method [Linton and Smetanina, 2016] and a simple technical chart method for empirical analysis. For the purpose of this study, the possibility of a bubble was empirically analyzed by analyzing the price volatility formed in the Korean virtual currency market over the past year, and brief policy implications for this were presented.

  • Underwater noise pollution has a significant impact on the marine environment. This study proposed a simple approach to estimate the acoustic radiation efficiency of structures with air bubble layers. The method considered the insertion loss caused by the air bubble layer through post-processing of numerical results, assuming that insertion loss is equivalent to attenuation as demonstrated by previous studies. The proposed approach was validated by comparing it with a fully coupled analysis for plate structure models. The commercial finite element program COMSOL Multiphysics was used for the acoustic-structure interaction analysis, and the acoustic characteristics of air bubble layer for the fully coupled analysis was simulated by on the Commander and Prosperetti theory. The trends indicated good agreement between the simple approach and the fully coupled analysis in terms of radiation efficiency. It is confirmed that the proposed method is providing insight into the principal mechanism of underwater noise reduction for the bubble layer on the wedge-shaped structure.
