Effect of fermentor type on biopolymer production with Cordyceps militaris

  • The effects of fermentor types on biopolymer production with Cordyceps militaris has been studied in this articles. Since the shear stresses of stirred tank ferementor and bubble column fermentor were different, the mycelium growth and biopolymer production were different. The mycerial growth was high with the bubble column fermentor for the early stage but biopolymer production was lower than that with stirred tank fermentor. The production of biopolymer was closely related to shear stress to the cells and biopolymer production was increased with increased shear stress.

  • This work analyzes the behaviors of aerated lubricant in the gap between con-rod bearing and journal. It is assumed that the film formation with aerated lubricant is influenced by the two major factors. One is the density characteristics of the lubricant due to the volume change of lubricant for the formation of bubbles and the other is the viscosity characteristics of the lubricant due to the surface tension of the bubble in the lubricant. These two major factors surprisingly increase the load capacity in some ranges of bubble sizes and densities. Modified Reynolds' equation is developed for the computation of fluid film pressure with the effects of aeration ratio in the lubricant. From the calculated load capacity by solving modified Reynolds' equation, journal locus is computed with Mobility method after comparing it with the applied load at each time step. The differences of journal orbits between aerated and pure lubricants are shown in the computed results.

  • Augmentation of CHF by ultrasonic is experimentally studied under subcooling pool boiling condition. Experiment is carried out for downward-facing plate with and without the ultrasonic. The working fluid is distilled water. Experimental apparatus is composed of a bath, power supply, test section, ultrasonic generator, DAQ system. Experiment is performed with the subcooling temperature of $5^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, $40^{\circ}C$ and the inclined angle of $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, 90. From the experimental results, it is found that ultrasonic effect enhances CHF of the downward-facing plate. As increasing the degree of subcooling, the rate of CHF increase is enhanced. As increasing the inclined angle, the rate of CHF increase decreases. Also, we can see that the heat transfer mechanism of CHF augmentation is closely connected with the dynamic behavior of bubble generation and departure.

  • An experimental study was made of turbulent separated and reattaching flow over a blunt body, where unsteady wake was generated by a spoke wheel-type wake generator with cylindrical rods. The influence of unsteady wake was scrutinized by altering the rotating direction (CW and CCW) and the normalized passing frequency $(0{\leq}St_H{\leq}0.20)$. The Reynolds number based on the cylindrical rod was $Re_d=375$. A phase-averaging technique was employed to characterize the unsteady wake. The effect of different rotating directions was examined in detail, which gave a significant reduction of $X_R$. The wall pressure fluctuations on the blunt body were analyzed in terms of the spectrum and the coherence.

  • The bubble cavitation and cloud cavitation are the major sources of cavitation-induced sound and vibration. A numerical method which predicts the trajectory and volume change of a cavity is developed, to predict the cavitation noise of a body. It is shown, by using the numerical method, that the cavitation inception and events rate is strongly dependent on the screening effect caused by the pressure gradient around a body, which is confirmed experimentally. Additionally, the effectiveness of a cavitation control method utilizing air injection is investigated experimentally. It is demonstrated that the noise level of the cloud cavitation can be significantly reduced by the air-injection method.

A Study on the Flow Characteristics around a Coanda Control Surface

  • Jet flows applied tangential to a foil surface near the leading and/or trailing edges increase the lift of the foil by delaying the separation also known as the Coanda effects. Many experimental and numerical studies have proven the effectiveness of Coanda effects on circulation control and the effects have been found to be useful in practical application in many aerodynamics fields. Most of the previous works have studied the effects of the jet blowing near the trailing edges and investigated the influence of jet momentum on lift. A few experimental studies, however, focused on the separation bubble that develops near the leading edge and applied jet flow the edge to remove the bubble but only to find decrease in lift. In the present paper, a Coanda foil of 20% thickness ellipse with modified rounded leading and trailing edges was investigated, and the flow around the foil was numerically studied. The blowing around the leading edge only decreased the lift, as the experiments showed, but the suction considerably increased the lift.

Modeling Heterogeneous Wall Nucleation in Flashing Flow of Initially Subcooled Water

  • An analytical model to calculate rate of vapor generation due to heterogeneous wall nucleation in flashing flow is developed. In the present model, an important parameter of the vapor generation term, i.e. nucleation site density is calculated by integrating its probability distribution function with respect to active cavity radius. The limits of integration are minimum and maximum active cavity radii, and these are formulated using an active cavity model for nucleate boiling. This formulation, therefore. can statistically account for the effect of surface specific thermo-physical and geometric conditions on the vapor generation rate and flashing inception. For verifying the adequacy of the present model, steady state two-fluid and the bubble transport equations are solved with applicable constitutive equations. The applicable region of the bubble transport equation is also extended to churn-turbulent flow regime to predict interfacial area concentration at high void fraction. Predicted results in terms of axial pressure and void fraction profiles along the channels are compared with experimental data of Super Moby Dick and BNL Reasonable agreements have been achieved and this shows the applicability of the present model to flashing flow analysis.

  • A level set method is proposed to simulate the incompressible two-phase flow considering the effect of surface tension. For reinitialization of level set junction, a direct approach method is employed, instead of solving hyperbolic type equation. A mixed element is adopted, so that the continuity mid Navier-Stokes equations are solved by using the quadratic elements (six-node triangular element mid nine-node quadrilateral element), mid the level set function is solved by using the linear elements (three-node triangular element mid four-node quadrilateral element). In order to verify the accuracy mid robustness of the codes, the present methods are applied to a few benchmark problems. It is confirmed that the present results are in good qualitative mid quantitative agreements with the existing studies.

돌출된 열원이 부착된 수직 채널내 복합열전달 (Conjugate Heat Transfer in a Vertical Channel with Protrunding Heat Source)

  • The coupled conduction and convection heat transfer from the protruding heat source in a vertical channel is numerically investigated. Conjugate solution of the two-dimensional energy equation is obtained for the incompressible air flow over the rectangular block with local heat source. It was found that several recirculation zones and separation bubble near the block were related to Re and Gr. And the results show that fractions of the heat transfer through each of the block face, maximum temperature of the block and the relative effect of each parameter on the maximum temperature and heat transfer.

  • 기체-액체 이상유동의 거동 시뮬레이션을 위해 Lattice Boltzmann방법(LBM)을 이용하였다. 기체-액체사이의 경계면에서 상호포텐셜 모델인 Shen-Chan방식과 Carnahan-Starling 상태방정식을 도입하였다. 또한 외력항의 처리는 Exact Difference Method를 사용하였다. 개발된 코드를 통하여 상태방정식 특성파악, 기체-액체의 상분리, 표면장력 및 기체 액체 경계면 거동 특성, Homogeneous와 Heterogeneous 캐비테이션, 기포 붕괴등의 시뮬레이션을 수행하였다.
