  • Electro-mechanical battery (EMB) consists of a high-speed fly wheel with an integral motor/ generator suspended on magnetic bearings and in an evacuated housing. Permanent magnet (PM) machines as the EMB motor/ generator are a popular choice, since there are no excitation losses which means substantial increase in the efficiency. In this paper we present the comparison of conventional slotted and slotless ring-wound types, aimed at EMB and other high-speed drives. We firstly discuss the topology of each machine for this particular application. these machines are primarily designed as 1kW two-pole PM generator with the rated speed of 40000 rpm. the motoring torque of 0.51 Nm has to be enough to accelerate the flywheel to the rated speed. We then present the comparison of the open-circuit field, the armature reaction field and winding inductance. next we analyze the induced voltage and the developed torque per unit stack length and unit weight of different machines. Finally, we estimate and compare the losses and the efficiency at motoring and generating modes.

  • An improved fuzzy Kalman filtering speed estimation scheme was proposed by means of measuring stator side voltage and current value based on vector control state equation of induction motor. The designed fuzzy adaptive controller conducted recursive online correction of measurement noise covariance matrix by monitoring the ratio of theory residuals and actual residuals to make it approach real noise level gradually, allowing the filter to perform optimal estimation to improve estimation accuracy of EKF. Meanwhile, co-simulation scheme based on MATLAB and Ansoft was proposed in order to improve simulation accuracy. Field-circuit coupling problems of induction motor under the action of vector control were solved and the parameter optimization accuracy was improved dramatically. The simulation and experimental results show that this algorithm has a strong ability to inhibit the random measurement noise. It is able to estimate motor speed accurately, and has superior static and dynamic characteristics.

  • This paper proposes an optimal current distribution method of dual-rotor brushless DC machines (DR-BLDCMs) which have inner and outer surface-mounted permanent-magnet rotors. The DR-BLDCM has high power density and high torque density compare to the conventional single rotor BLDCM. To drive the DR-BLDCM, dual 3-phase PWM inverters are required to excite the currents of a dual stator of the DR-BLDCM and an optimal current distribution algorithm is also needed to enhance the system efficiency. In this paper, the copper loss and the switching loss of a DR-BLDCM drive system are analyzed according to the motor parameters and the switching frequency. Moreover, the optimal current distribution method is proposed to minimize the total electrical loss. The validity of the proposed method was verified through several experiments.

  • In the design and analysis of electric machines the precise calculation of iron loss has incredible significance. It is tough to foresee iron losses precisely in machines due to distribution of non sinusoidal flux density. It is necessary to approximate the iron losses for the precise computation of efficiency. This paper presents a novel approach for the prediction of iron losses of the brushless dc (BLDC) motors by considering the effects of minor hysteresis loops in the simplified model. The novel iron loss model results are compared with the simplified model and with finite element method (FEM).

  • Linear motors has been developed for factory automation, transportation applications, among other applications. As the trend toward compact sizes in micro electronic products progresses, the required motor drives in these applications need to be downsized with increased power densities. It appears that the winding of miniature linear motors is the most awkward part to be scaled down from conventional motor designs when miniaturizing. This paper presents an alternative design for slotless linear motors. A novel flexible printed circuit winding has been applied to obtain a simplified but qualified result. Having explained the prototyping and inspection, a discussion is given to examine the achievement of this study.

  • Brushless doubly-fed machine (BDFM) doesn't use brush and slip ring, and has advantages such as high system reliability, small capacity of its frequency converter, low system cost, adjustable power factor and speed, etc. At the same time, it has good applicable potentials on the variable frequency motors and the variable speed constant frequency generators. However, due to the complicacy and particularity of BDFM in the structure and operating mechanism, the effect of magnetic field modulation directly influences the operating efficiency of BDFM. To study the effect of different cage rotor structures on the magnetic field modulation of BDFM, the rotor magnetomotive force (MMF) of BDFM with cage rotor is studied by the analytical method. The components and features of rotor harmonic MMFs are discussed. At the same time, the method to weaken the higher harmonics is analyzed by the theoretic formulae. Furthermore, the magnetic field modulation mechanism is expounded on in detail and the relationship between the magnetic field modulation effect and the operating efficiency of BDFM is established. And then, a new method for estimating the magnetic field modulation effect is proposed. At last, the magnetic field modulation effects of four BDFM prototypes with different cage rotor structures are compared by the MMF analysis and the efficiency data of electromagnetic design. The results verify the effectiveness of the new method for estimating the magnetic field modulation effect of BDFM with cage rotor.

  • In this paper, two rotor configurations including different amount of magnet and reluctance parts are presented. The rotors are constituted by means of a flexible hybrid motor structure. Considerable features of the hybrid structure are that the combination of the magnet and reluctance parts can be suitably modified and the mechanical angle (${\beta}$) between the parts can also be varied. Two hybrid rotor configurations have been considered in this study. First, finite element (FE) simulations were carried out and the torque behaviors of the motors were predicted. The average torque ($T_{avg}$) and maximum torque ($T_{max}$) curves were obtained from FE simulations in order to find suitable ${\beta}$. Mathematical model of the motors was formed in terms of a,b,c variables considering the amount of the magnet and reluctance parts on the rotor and simulations were performed. Rotor prototypes, motor drive and drive method were introduced. Torque profiles of the motors were obtained by static torque measurement and loaded tests were also realized. Thus, simulation results were verified by experimental study. There is a good match between predictions and measurements. The proposed motors are operated with electrical $120^{\circ}$ mode as a brushless DC motor (BLDC) and torque versus speed characteristics show a compound DC motor characteristic. The motors can be named as brushless DC compound motors.

  • The voltage source PWM inverter generally used to drive the air conditioning (A/C) fans has been posing a large issue that the bearings in air conditioning fan motors are highly possible to be corroded electrically. Potential difference called shaft voltage is generated between inner and outer rings of the bearings due to inverter switching. The shaft voltage causes bearing lubricant breakdown dielectrically. As a result, bearing current is caused. This current causes the bearing corrosion. In previous work, we demonstrated that the shaft voltage can be reduced by using an insulator inserted between the outer and inner cores of the rotor in an air conditioning fan motor without grounding. This paper proposes the other countermeasure for reducing the shaft voltage in fan motors. The countermeasure which adds a capacitor between the brackets and the stator core is effective even for fan motors with non-insulated rotor. The effectiveness is confirmed by both simulated and experimental results.

  • Climate change and other pollutions make a huge demand of environment friendly and high efficient motors especially Brushless DC (BLDC) motors. Generally, bidirectional energized BLDC motors are used widely; however, inverter devices used in the driver put fear of being effected by noise. This paper proposes unidirectional energized BLDC motor which utilizes asymmetrical H-bridge circuit as the driver circuit. The Minato motor is one of the pioneers in unidirectional energized system. The use of bar magnets in the rotor is one of the biggest disadvantages of the motor. We proposed using tabular magnets. The paper compares the power consumption and efficiency of the Minato motor and the proposed motor. During high speed rotation, undesirable armature current is generated that has a deceleration characteristic. This current lowers the motor's efficiency. In this paper, we propose the solutions and show comparison through equations of the copper loss ratio for the Minato and our proposed motors. The third motor, which has the highest efficiency, was discovered during examination of the equations.
