This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of larval stages of three species, namely, Tenebrio molitor, Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis, and Ptecticus tenebrifer larvae, in degrading poultry manure, specially, broiler and duck manure. The survival rates of larvae were also noted. For the experiment, T. molitor (n=300), P. brevitarsis seulensis (n=60), and P. tenebrifer (n=300) hatched larvae were randomly divided into six groups with three replicates. The degaradation efficacy tests were then performed for 30 days in a laboratory. The test groups were as follows: T1, 110 g broiler manure + T. molitor larvae (n=50); T2, 110 g duck manure + T. molitor larvae (n=50); T3, 125 g broiler manure + P. brevitarsis seulensis larvae (n=10); T4, 125 g duck manure + P. brevitarsis seulensis larvae (n=10); T5, 105 g broiler manure + P. tenebrifer larvae (n=50); and T6, 105 g duck manure + P. tenebrifer larvae (n=50). The groups showed significant efficacy in degrading broiler and duck manure (p<0.05). The highest survival rates were recorded for T. molitor larvae in both manure types [T1 (92.67%) and T2 (50%)], followed by P. brevitarsis seulensis larvae (T4, 40%) and P. tenebrifer larvae (T6, 14.67%) in duck manure. Next, the survival rates of P. brevitarsis seulensis (T3) and Ptecticus tenebrifer larvae (T5) in broiler manure were 0%. In conclusion, these results point to the feasibility of using insect larvae to degrade broiler and duck manure.
This study was conducted to evaluate the structure and composition (i.e., pH, moisture, total-N, pathogens, and volatile fatty acids) of broiler and duck manure treated with larvae of three insect larvae, namely, Tenebrio molitor, Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis, and Ptecticus tenebrifer. Hatched Tenebrio molitor (n=300), Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis (n=60), and Ptecticus tenebrifer (n=300) were used in this study; specially, the larvae were divided into six treatments with three replicates. The treatments were as follows: T1: 110 g broiler manure + Tenebrio molitor larvae (n=50), T2: 110 g duck manure + Tenebrio molitor larvae (n=50), T3: 125 g broiler manure + Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis larvae (n=10), T4: 125 g duck manure + Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis larvae (n=10), T5: 105 g broiler manure + Ptecticus tenebrifer larvae (n=50), and T6: 105 g duck manure + Ptecticus tenebrifer larvae (n=50). For all the larval treatments, the following results were observed: The moisture content of the duck manure treat with three insect larvae was higher than that of the broiler manure (p<0.05), whereas broiler manure had a higher pH (p<0.05). In addition, the total nitrogen content of broiler manure was higher than that of duck manure (p<0.05). However, the insect larvae did not significantly affect pathogens (E.coli and Salmonella) and the volatile fatty acids (p>0.05). In conclusion, the use of the three insect larvae to create organic nitrogen compost using poultry manure is feasible.
This studies were conducted to investigate the difference of carcass characteristics between chicken broiler and duck broiler and the carcass characteristics of chicken broiler by sex, rearing type, season and feed and water deprivation with 240 chicken broilers and 20 duck broilers. The results obtained are summerized as follows. 1. The carcass yields were 65.43% in chicken broiler and 66.78% in duck broiler. The abdominal fat pad of chicken broiler was higher than that of duck broiler. 2. There were differences in commercial cuts production percentages between chicken broiler and duck broiler, and the commercial cut of chicken broiler was produced from drumsticks and thighs, breast back, wings and neck in order. 3. Although there was little difference in carcass yields between male and female of broiler, the abdominal fat pad of male broiler was lower than that of female broiler. 4. The carcass yields in cage and floor type were not different, but the abdominal fat pad in cage was slightly higher than that in floor. 5. There was no difference in carcass yields among Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, but the abdominal fat pad was highest in Summer and lowest in Winter. 6. As feed and water deprivation time increased by one hour, live weight was decreased by 0.28365% , and the carcass yield was highest after 6 hours depribated feed and water.

This study was carried out to investigate the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella serotypes in duck farms of Jeollanam-do Province, South Korea. A total of 1112 samples (breeder ducks, 286; broiler ducks, 826) were collected from 196 duck farms (breeder duck farms, 25; broiler duck farms, 171) between January 2018 and November 2019. The total prevalence of Salmonella serotypes was 45.4% (89/196) in the duck farms, with no significant difference between prevalence in breeder and broiler duck farms (48% and 45%, respectively; P>0.05). The most prevalent serotype among the 127 Salmonella isolates was Salmonella Typhimurium (20.5%) followed by Salmonella Albany (17.3%), Salmonella Hadar (15.7%), and Salmonella Enteritidis (11.8%). Maximum resistance was observed against penicillin (78.74%), followed by tetracycline (68.50%), and kanamycin (65.35%). Of the 127 isolates, 117 (92.13%) were resistant to ≥3 antimicrobials and 2 to all 18 antimicrobials. Our results demonstrate the presence of Salmonella strains and their resistance to multiple antimicrobials, thus indicating a public health concern in South Korea. The emergence of Salmonella stains that are resistant to multiple drugs highlight the need for careful use of antimicrobials in duck farms.
This study was conducted to examine the performance of poultry production and ammonia emissions from poultry litter when the mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.) powder was fed to broilers and ducks. In Experiment 1, a total of 180 1-day-old broilers (Arbor acres) were allocated to two treatments with three replicates in a completely randomized design. In Experiment 2, ducks were used in the same method as in Experiment 1. The dietary treatments were as follows: basal diets as control and basal diets with 1.5% Tenebrio molitor L. powder as T1. In Experiment 1, broiler production was not affected by the addition of mealworm powder (p>0.05). Ammonia from broiler litter was observed significantly different in the two treatments at 4 and 5 weeks (p<0.05); however, in other weeks ammonia measured did not show significance different (p>0.05). In Experiment 2, feeding of mealworm powder had no statistical significance on duck productivity (p>0.05). Ammonia emissions from duck litter were not statistically significant in the two treatments at 2 to 5 weeks (p>0.05); however, there was a difference at 6 weeks (p<0.05). Therefore, the addition of mealworm powder to broiler and duck diets did not only improved weight gain and feed efficiency, but also effectively reduced ammonia in poultry litter.

This work was carried out to improve the performance and the carcass yield of Korea native duck (KND) according to crossbreeding KND and broiler duck (BD). Two hundred forty out of crossbred ducks were divided into 4 strains and selected as 120 ducks separated by sex, respectively. Crossbred ducks were native ducks (female)${\times}$native ducks (male), native ducks (female)${\times}$broiler ducks (male), broiler ducks (female)${\times}$native ducks (male), and broiler ducks (female)${\times}$broiler ducks(male) as A, B, C and D, respectively. Broiler duck diet was fed as experimental diet for 0~3 weeks (CP 22.0%, ME 2,900 kcal/kg) and 3~8 weeks (CP 18.0%, ME 3,000 kcal/kg). Body weight of male was high compared to female, and that of B and C was high compared to A and low compared to D at 3 and 8 week (P<0.05). Body weight gain of male was high compared to female at 3~8 weeks and 0~8 weeks, and it was shown as D>C>B>A on body weight gain (P<0.05). In case of feed intake, there was no difference between male and female, and B and C were high compared to A and low compared to D (P<0.05). Male feed requirement was high at 3~8 weeks, and there was significant difference between A and B, C and between B and D. Carcass yield of 4 strains was shown as 70.1%, 70.8%, 73.1% and 71.2%, respectively. Finally, Crossbreeding of KND and BD may improve the performance and the carcass yield of KND.
Organic duck's carcass weight was lower than general duck's because of the differences in breed and feeding method, but there was no difference in carcass percent among them. The rate of organic duck's fresh breast meat(17.62%) was significantly higher than that of general duck's(11.95%)(p<0.05). The rate of fresh leg meat rate was lower in organic duck, but there was no significant difference among them(p>0.05). The pH of breast and leg measured immediately after butchering were 6.48 and 6.73 in organic duck, respectively and there was significant difference among them(p<0.05). According to the sensory test, the texture, odor, tenderness, and taste showed better preference in organic duck than those of broiler chicken. According to above physicochemical analysis and sensory test, organic duck showed higher pH, higher shear force, and lower cooking loss. Therefore, it is considered to be very valuable to develop the exploitation of meat product in organic duck which had good quality and tastiness.
The effects of essential oils on pH, pathogens, and volatile fatty acids (VFA) in two poultry litters were investigated through a lab study. Essential oil-added poultry litters were randomly divided to two groups: control (200 g poultry litter) and Treatment (50 g thymol/Briefly, 200 g broiler litter was treated with or without 50 g thymol (Control and T1, respectively; 1 groups) and 200 g duck litter was treated with or without 50 g carvacrol (Control and T2, respectively; 2 group). Adding thymol to broiler litter increased the pH, reduced pathogens, and did not affect VFA. Interestingly, adding carvacrol slightly reduced the pH of duck litter, but had no significant effect on reducing pathogens and VFA. This difference is probably because the essential oil used and the properties of the two litters are different. In addition, pH was thought to control the odor generated from the litter, but this has not been proven. Further field studies should focus on clarifying this point.
The present study was conducted to investigate the phage types(PT) of Salmonella enteritidis(SE) isolated from animals and human patients in Korea during the period 1993-1999. SE were isolated from chickens including the layer and broiler, duck, rat, swine and human patients in nationwide scale. A total of 231 non-human and 14 human SE strains were phage typed and 80.4%(197/245) of SE isolates tested could discriminate as a ten SEPTs including the RDNC by the 10 standard phages, which were brought from the Central Public Health Laboratory in England. In analysing of phage types both animal and human SE isolates, SEPT 4(55.4%) was the most prevalent in domestic animals including the layer(39.3%) and broiler(64.5%), duck(55.5%), and swine(75.0%) since 1993. About 57% of the S enteritidis from human was SEPT 4. Along with SEPT 4, SEPT 1, SEPT 6a, SEPT 7 and SEPT 7a var, SEPT 9b, SEPT 15, SEPT 21b and SEPT 22 were also found from animal and human SE isolates. SEPT 4(40.0%) was isolated from frozen chicken meats imported from China along with SEPT 7 and 7a var strains in this study. In conclusion, SEPT 4 was the most predominant SEPT in our country regardless of animal or human hosts including the Che-Ju island and almost exclusively found in domestic poultry(layer and broiler). During the review period, SEPT 4 has already been spreading continually among the animal hosts since 1993.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of Bamboo Vinegar Liquid(BVL) on performance and meat quality of broiler ducks for 5 weeks. One hundred broiler ducks were divided into 4 groups with S replicates per treatment. Dietary levels of food waste 0%, 1%, 2% and 4% were included in experimental diets. The growth performance and carcass weight of broiler duck fed BVL supplement diets were not significantly different(P>0.05) from the control birds. The lipid content was decreased(P<0.n) by addition of BVL 2% and 4%, whereas the protein was increased(P<0.05). The cholesterol content and TBA in breast meat were significantly(P<0.05) decreased by addition of BVL. palmitic acid of fatty acid composition were decreased by addition BVL 2% and 4% whereas linoleic acid was increased by addition of BVI. 2% and 4%. The odor, appearance and taste of sensory evaluation were improved by addition BVL 1% and 2%. The results of this study indicate that dietary supplemental BVL 1% and 2% may improve the meat quality of broiler ducks.
