  • As bridge conditions in the United States continue to deteriorate, rapid bridge replacement procedures are needed. Decked precast prestressed concrete (DPPC) girders are used for rapid bridge construction because the bridge deck is precast with the girders eliminating the need for a cast-in-place slab. One of the concerns with using DPPC girders as a bridge construction option is the durability of the longitudinal joints between girders. The objectives of this paper were to propose a method to use a spring element modeling procedure for representing welded steel connector assemblies between adjacent girders in DPPC girder bridges, perform a preliminary study of bridge performance under multiple loading scenarios and bridge configurations, and discuss model flexibility for accommodating future field data for model verification. The spring elements have potential to represent the contribution of joint grout materials by altering the spring stiffness.

  • The seismic fragility curves of a structure represents the probability of exceeding the prescribed structural damage given various levels of ground motion intensityand the seismic fragility curve is essential to evaluation of structural performance and assessment of risk and loss of structures. The purpose of this paper is to develop seismic fragility functions for bridge structures in Koreaby reviewing those of advanced countries. Therefore, at first, we investigated development conditions of the seismic fragility functions. And the next highway bridges in Korea are classified into a number of categories and several typical bridges are selected to estimate seismic fragilities for using this analysis method in Korea. Finally, fragility curves for PSC Box girder bridge are estimated. The results show that the bridge classification and damage state play an important role in estimation of seismic damage and seismic fragility analysis for bridge structures.

  • Some as-built drawings in national roadway bridges in Korea were examined. There are many bridge piers, whose aspect ratios are in the vicinity of 2.5. These columns are expected to do shear-flexure behaviour and have large scale effect between full and reduced scale model. In the study, full and 1/2 scale model tests on the shear-flexure behaviour columns were carried out. The seismic performance of existing bridge piers without seismic details were examined by Quasi Static Test

  • The purpose of this study is to assess the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge piers using inelastic finite element analysis. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. The proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of reinforced concrete bridge piers is verified by comparison with the reliable experimental results.

  • The objective of this research is to evaluate of seismic performance for reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap splices of longitudinal reinforcement steels using predict of nonlinear hysteric behavior. For the purpose, analytical trilinear hysteretic model has been used to simulate the force displacement hysteretic curve of RC bridge piers under repeated reversal loads. The moment capacity and corresponding curvature in the plastic hinge have been determined, and the enhanced hysteretic behavior model by five different kinds of branches has been proposed for modeling the stiffness variation of RC section under cyclic loading. The strength and stiffness degradation index are introduced to compute the hysteretic curve vary confinement steel ratio. In addition, the modified curvature factor has been introduced to forecast of seismic performance of longitudinal steel lap spliced and retrofitted specimens.

  • The performance evaluation and deflection of 3 spans concrete simplicity slab bridge analyzed by non-destructive and loading test. Compressive strength of slab and pier appeared in the range of each 353∼366 kgf/$cm^2$ and 152∼215 kgf/$cm^2$ in rebound number test. Also, it appeared that concrete quality of slab was good after performance improvement. The average compressive strength of slab by core picking appeared 229 kg/$cm^2$. In reinforcing bar arrangement test of span and member, it appeared that horizontal and vertical reinforcing bar was arranged to fixed interval. The value of calculation deflection that carried structural analysis with deflection analysis wave in static loading test appeared higher than that of experimental deflection and it appeared that hardness of this bridge was good. Maximum impact factor that estimated from deflection by running speed in dynamic loading test appeared by 0.216 in 10 km/hr running speed.

  • Recently, the use of high-strength concrete is increasing due to the trend of constructing high-rise and long span structures. The benefit of using the high-strength concrete is that it increases the durability and strength while it reduces the cross-sectional area of the bridge deck slabs. Moreover, it offers more safety as these bridge deck slabs applying high-strength requires strict structural performance verification. In this study, the fatigue performance of the bridge deck slabs applying 80 MPa high-strength concrete was verified through various experiments. The experimental results showed that the specimens satisfy the conditions of flexural strength, punching shear strength, deflection and cracking. In conclusion, the bridge deck slabs designed by 80 MPa high-strength concrete are enough safe despite of its low thickness.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns with interlocking circular hoops. Three interlocking columns were tested under a constant axial load and a quasistatic, cyclically reversed horizontal load. A computer program, RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology) was used for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures. The used numerical method gives a realistic prediction of performance throughout the loading cycles for several test specimens investigated. Based on the experimental and analytical results, design recommendations are presented to improve the existing practice in the design and construction of reinforced concrete bridge columns with interlocking circular hoops.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of hollow precast segmental PSC bridge columns. The proposed system can reduce work at a construction site and makes construction periods shorter. Shortened construction times, in turn, lead to important safety and economic advantages when traffic disruption or rerouting is necessary. Two hollow precast segmental PSC bridge columns were tested under a constant axial load and a quasistatic, cyclically reversed horizontal load. A computer program, RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures, was used. The proposed numerical method gives a realistic prediction of performance throughout the loading cycles for several test specimens investigated.

  • This study investigates the performance of advanced hollow reinforced concrete (RC) bridge column sections with triangular reinforcement details. Hollow column sections are based on economic considerations of cost savings associated with reduced material and design moments, as against increased construction complexity, and hence increased labor costs. The proposed innovative reinforcement details are economically feasible and rational, and facilitate shorter construction periods. We tested a model of advanced hollow column sections under quasi-static monotonic loading. The results showed that the proposed triangular reinforcement details were equal to the existing reinforcement details, in terms of the required performance. We used a computer program, Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology (RCAHEST), for analysis of the RC structures; and adopted a modified lateral confining effect model for the advanced hollow bridge column sections. Our study documents the testing of hollow RC bridge column sections with innovative reinforcement details, and presents conclusions based on the experimental and analytical findings. Additional full-scale experimental research is needed to refine and confirm the design details, especially for the actual detailing employed in the field.
