  • The needs for Light Railroad Transit(LRT) have been increased due to the heavy traffic congestions in large cities like Seoul, Korea. Korean government is seeking the LRT system development (including planning, designing, construction, and maintenance and operations) in terms of public-private-partnership (PPP). At the private sector side, it is crucial to estimate the life cycle cost (LCC) to project the cash flow during the O&M period. Since the most construction and O&M cost of LRT project is at the bridge construction, a cost analysis model and a cost breakdown structures (CBS) on LRT bridges are discussed through in depth literature reviews. Construction and maintenance cost of bridges are collected and analyzed. LCC is analyzed by types of bridge superstructures and historical data of repair and rehabilitation (R&R) is investigated. There have been scarce number of LCC analysis on railway bridges. This research delivers a well-defined CBS and maintenance cost data, which will be a great benefit to the systematic maintenance strategy development for railroad bridges.

  • This paper is concerned with an experimental research to random vibration control caused by external loads specially in bridges which tend to be structurally flexible. Experimenting on a reduced structure modelled on Seohae Grand Bridge, we inflicted a reduced form of El-centro wave on the model structure to a proper proportion. On the center of its middle span, we placed a shear type MR damper which was to control its vibration and also acquire its structural responses such as displacement and acceleration at the same site. The experiments concerning controlling vibration were performed according to a variety of theories including un-control, passive on/off control, and Lyapunov stability theory. Its control performance was evaluated in terms of the peak absolute displacements, the peak absolute accelerations and the total power required to control the bridge which differ from each different experiment method. Among all the methods applied in this paper, case of Lyapunov control method turned out to be the most effective to reduces of displacement and acceleration. Also, this method could to decrease consuming of external power for vibration control. Finally, it was noteworthy that Lyapunov control method was specially effective in the vibration control employing a semi-active damper such MR damper.

  • PCI Express is a bus technology that connects the processor and the peripheral I/O devices that widely used as an industry standard because it has the characteristics of high-speed, low power. In addition, PCI Express is system interconnect technology such as Ethernet and Infiniband used in high-performance computing and computer cluster. PGAS(partitioned global address space) programming model is often used to implement the one-sided RDMA(remote direct memory access) from multi-host systems, such as computer clusters. In this paper, we design and implement a OpenSHMEM API based on PCI Express maintaining the existing features of OpenSHMEM to implement RDMA based on PCI Express. We perform experiment with implemented OpenSHMEM API through a matrix multiplication example from system which PCs connected with NTB(non-transparent bridge) technology of PCI Express. The PCI Express interconnection network is currently very expensive and is not yet widely available to the general public. Nevertheless, we actually implemented and evaluated a PCI Express based interconnection network on the RDK evaluation board. In addition, we have implemented the OpenSHMEM software stack, which is of great interest recently.

  • Recently, concerns relating to the maintenance of large structures have been increased. In addition, the number of large structures that need to be evaluated for their structural safety due to natural disasters and structural deterioration has been rapidly increasing. It is common for the structural characteristics of an older large structure to differ from the characteristics in the initial design stage, and changes in dynamic characteristics may result from a reduction in stiffness due to cracks on the materials. The process of deterioration of such structures enables the detection of damaged locations, as well as a quantitative evaluation. One of the typical measuring instruments used for the monitoring of bridges and buildings is the dynamic measurement system. Conventional dynamic measurement systems require considerable cabling to facilitate a direct connection between sensor and DAQ logger. For this reason, a method of measuring structural responses from a remote distance without the mounted sensors is needed. In terms of non-contact methods that are applicable to dynamic response measurement, the methods using the doppler effect of a laser or a GPS are commonly used. However, such methods could not be generally applied to bridge structures because of their costs and inaccuracies. Alternatively, a method using a visual image can be economical as well as feasible for measuring vibration signals of inaccessible bridge structures and extracting their dynamic characteristics. Many studies have been conducted using camera visual signals instead of conventional mounted sensors. However, these studies have been focused on measuring displacement response by an image processing technique after recording a position of the target mounted on the structure, in which the number of measurement targets may be limited. Therefore, in this study, a model experiment was carried out to verify the measurement algorithm for measuring multi-point displacement responses by using a DIC (Digital Image Correlation) technique.

  • The proposed model to predict the bridge load carrying capacity uses the impact response spectrum. The spectrum is based on Euler-Bernoulli beam and the center of the bridge width for the moving load location. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the eccentric moving load effects on the impact factor and response factor. For this, this study considers 10 m width and two-lane simply supported slab bridges and performs the moving load analysis to investigate the variations of peak impact factor and corresponding response factor. The numerical results show that the eccentric load increases both the static and dynamic displacements, but the impact factor is decreased since the incremental amount of static displacement is bigger than that of dynamic displacement. However, the difference of the impact factors between the center and eccentric loadings is small showing less than 0.5%p. In the response factor, the eccentric loading increases both the static and dynamic response factors, compared to the center loading. The difference of the response factor is only 0.18%p. It shows that the eccentric loading has very small effects on the response factor, thus the impact factor response spectrum which is generated based on the center moving load can be used to determine the response factor.

  • Infrastructures such as bridges and tunnels are crucial elements of national economic growth, and sudden collapses may lead to great catastrophes with significant social and economic losses, as well as a loss of lives. Hence, an efficient maintenance technique must be applied to guarantee safety, secure budgets to maintain a certain level of service, and prevent maintenance expenditures from being concentrated in a specific time period. Developed countries have experienced rapid increases in maintenance budgets, and maintenance costs now account for about 40% of the total maintenance budget. The level of service in asset management systems is an essential element for setting management goals and making priority decisions. Therefore, this study uses fuzzy theory to develop a new way to assess the level of service. The assessment model was applied to an actual bridge to evaluate the level of service for users.

  • In this study, the convenience and efficiency of vision-based displacement measurement (VBDM) to estimate the cable tension of cable-stayed bridges and the requirements for its effective application were examined. To demonstrate its convenience and efficiency, it was confirmed that VBDM can be accomplished with a minimum amount of equipment using a commercial camcorder. In this case, it was found that the accuracy of estimation of the natural frequencies is sufficient, even though magnitude errors can occur when conducting high-speed recording at the low resolution afforded by the minimal equipment employed. It was also confirmed that the most important factor in detecting the precise natural frequencies is the use of the appropriate frequency range in the tension estimation using vibration. Based on these results, a study was carried out on the accuracy variation of the estimated tension according to the frame rate of a commercial camcorder. For this purpose, an experiment was performed to estimate the cable tension in a cable-stayed bridge model. Through this experiment, the detectable tensions of cables with various natural frequencies as a function of the frame rate were summarized. As a result, it was shown that the frame rate should be determined based on the natural frequency which is estimated to be located within the appropriate frequency range (approximately 10~75% of theoretical range) considering the aliasing and low-frequency distortion due to excitations.

  • This paper aimed at the development of a unified wireless control system in order to control various forms of vibration of bridges. This unified wireless control system unified all different systems each of which functioned for difference purpose such as measurement, analysis, judgement, and control of data acquired from the movement of structure. It was designed to control structures with feedback which was returned according to each different situation after analyzing various signals measured about the structure. In this system, every information in each step from measurement to control was wirelessly transmitted to its central system so that a manager was able to effectively monitor the whole process. Just for the case when any system control need to intervene occurred, a graph user interface was designed for better access. In order to evaluate its basic performance, an experiment was carried out to see how signal input and output were done by comparing its results with those of a wired system. On the basis of the experiment, a vibration control experiment was performed on a model of cable-stayed bridge to see if the unified wireless control system worked well in realtime. This was carried out under four conditions, and the graph and quantitative result under each condition were compared each other. All experiments proved that the unified wireless control system functioned as well as the wired one in terms of its basic performance and vibration control.

  • In this paper, we developed a damage evaluation technique that can determine the damage location of a long-sized structure such as a cable-stayed bridge, and verified the performance of the developed technique through experiments. The damage assessment method aims to extract data that can evaluate the damage of the structure without the undamage data and can determine the damage location only by analyzing the response data of the structure. To complete this goal, we developed a damage assessment technique that considers variability based on the IMD theory, which is a statistical pattern recognition technique, to identify the damage location. To complete this goal, we developed a damage assessment technique that considers variability based on the IMD theory, which is a statistical pattern recognition technique, to identify the damage location. To evaluate the performance of the developed technique experimentally, cable damage experiments were conducted on model cable-stayed bridges. As a result, the damage assessment method considering variability automatically outputs the damageless data according to external force, and it is confirmed that the performance of extracting information that can determine the damage location of the cable through the analysis of the outputted damageless data and the measured damage data is shown.

  • The Gobiobotia naktongensis is a species endemic to Korea, and it has recently been designated as a class I endangered species of freshwater fish. Naeseong Stream, one of the tributaries of the Nakdong River, where the Gobiobotia naktongensis was first discovered, provided an optimal habitat for the Gobiobotia naktongensis in the past with fine sand beds and riffle. Currently, due to the construction of Yeongju Dam and the excessive dredging of river channels by the local government, the riverbed armoring in the downstream area of the dam is undergoing rapid changes, and as a result, the habitat environment of the Gobiobotia naktongensis is deteriorating. In this study, the variations of the habitat suitability of the Gobiobotia naktongensis due to the change in the riverbed grain size of the Naeseong Stream were analyzed based on the WUA (weight usable area) using the physical habitat model, River2D. The study domain is the reach from Seoktap Bridge to Hoeryong Bridge downstream of Yeongju Dam. The change in riverbed grain size was analyzed using D50 acquired in 2010 and 2020, respectively. The substrate grain size of Naeseong Stream in 2020 was thicker than that in 2010, and the riverbed coarsening phenomenon was evident overall. As a result of the River2D analysis, the area in which the Gobiobotia naktongensis could inhabit was only about 0.75% in 2010 compared to the entire area of the flow, and even this decreased to 0.55% in 2020 due to riverbed armoring.
