Analysis of concrete shrinkage along truss bridge with steel-concrete composite deck

  • The paper concerns analysis of effects of shrinkage of slab concrete in a steel-concrete composite deck of a through truss bridge span. Attention is paid to the shrinkage alongside the span, i.e., transverse to steel-concrete composite cross-beams. So far this aspect has not been given much attention in spite of the fact that it affects not only steel-concrete decks of bridges but also steel-concrete floors of steel frame building structures. For the problem analysis a two-dimensional model is created. An analytical method is presented in detail. A set of linear equations is built to compute axial forces in members of truss girder flange and transverse shear forces in steel-concrete composite beams. Finally a case study is shown: test loading of twin railway truss bridge spans is described, verified FEM model of the spans is presented and computational results of FEM and the analytical method are compared. Conclusions concerning applicability of the presented analytical method to practical design are drawn. The presented analytical method provides satisfactory accuracy of results in comparison with the verified FEM model.

  • This paper presents an energy method for the analysis of the in-plane ultimate load capacity of cable-stayed bridges considering deck and pylon connection. The potential energy of the whole bridge, including bridge deck, stayed cables, and pylons, and the work done by external loads are considered in the development of the bridge energy equation. Both geometric and material nonlinearities are taken into account in the analysis. The method is simple to use and has a high convergence rate.

Influence of structural system measures on the dynamic characteristics of a multi-span cable-stayed bridge

  • A three-dimensional finite element model for the Jiashao Bridge, the longest multi-span cable-stayed bridge in the world, is established using the commercial software package ANSYS. Dynamic characteristics of the bridge are analyzed and the effects of structural system measures including the rigid hinge, auxiliary piers and longitudinal constraints between the girders and side towers on the dynamic properties including modal frequency, mode shape and effective mass are studied by referring to the Jiashao Bridge. The analysis results reveal that: (i) the installation of the rigid hinge significantly reduces the modal frequency of the first symmetric lateral bending mode of bridge deck. Moreover, the rigid hinge significantly changes the mode shape and effective mass of the first symmetric torsional mode of bridge deck; (ii) the layout of the auxiliary piers in the side-spans has a limited effect on changing the modal frequencies, mode shapes and effective masses of global vibration modes; (iii) the employment of the longitudinal constraints significantly increases the modal frequencies of the vertical bending modes and lateral bending modes of bridge deck and have significant effects on changing the mode shapes of vertical bending modes and lateral bending modes of bridge deck. Moreover, the effective mass of the first anti-symmetric vertical bending of bridge deck in the longitudinal direction of the fully floating system is significantly larger than that of the partially constrained system and fully constrained system. The results obtained indicate that the structural system measures of the multi-span cable-stayed bridge have a great effect on the dynamic properties, which deserves special attention for seismic design and wind-resistant design of the multi-span cable-stayed bridge.

Field-Observed Cracking of Paired Lightweight and Normalweight Concrete Bridge Decks

  • Research has suggested that conventional lightweight concrete can offer durability advantages due to reduced cracking tendency. Although a number of publications exist providing the results of laboratory-based studies on the durability performance of lightweight concrete (with lightweight coarse aggregate) and internally cured concrete (using prewetted lightweight fine aggregate), far fewer field studies of durability performance of conventional lightweight concrete bridge decks in service have been performed. This study was commissioned to provide insight to a highway agency on whether enhanced durability performance, and therefore reduced maintenance and longer lifecycles, could be anticipated from existing lightweight concrete bridge decks that were not intentionally internally cured. To facilitate performance comparison, each lightweight bridge deck selected for inclusion in this study was paired with a companion normalweight bridge deck on a bridge of similar structural type, deck thickness, and geometric configuration, with similar age, traffic, and environmental exposure. The field-observed cracking of the decks was recorded and evaluated, and crack densities for transverse, longitudinal, and pattern cracking of the normalweight and lightweight deck in each pair were compared. Although some trends linking crack prevalence to geographic location, traffic, and age were observed, a distinct difference between the cracking present in the paired lightweight and normalweight bridge decks included in this study was not readily evident. Statistical analysis using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to adjust for age and traffic influence did not indicate that the type of concrete deck (lightweight or normalweight) is a statistically significant factor in the observed cracking. Therefore, for these service environments, lightweight decks did not consistently demonstrate reduced cracking.

FRP 바닥판의 약축방향 파괴모드에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Failure Mode of FRP Bridge Deck in It's Weak Axis)

  • 본 논문에서는 내구성과 수명을 획기적으로 향상시키기 위해 제3세대 건설재료인 섬유강화 플라스틱(FRP) 소재로 제작된 사각형 중공 교량 바닥판의 파괴모드를 실험과 해석을 통해 분석하였다. 재하시험 결과 바닥판의 강축방향의 거동은 파괴 직전까지도 거의 선형탄성적으로 거동한 반면, 약축방향의 거동은 재하초기부터 작은 하중하에서도 큰 비선형성을 보였다. 이 약축방향 비선형성의 원인은 웨브와 플랜지 연결부의 불완전한 일체거동으로 인한 소성거동 때문인 것으로 판단된다. 웨브와 플랜지의 연결부에 소성힌지를 도입한 간단한 구조모델을 이용하여 이를 확인하였다. 접착부의 박리 파괴 가능성도 검토하였으나 이는 대상 중공바닥판의 약축방향 파괴에 직접적으로 관여하는 것은 아닌 것으로 판단된다 약축방향의 구조거동을 개선시키기 위한 방안으로 내부를 폼으로 충전하는 방법을 제시하였으며 그 가능성을 구조해석을 통해 확인하였다.

인발성형 중공단면 복합소재 교량 바닥판의 구조적 특성 분석 (Structural Characteristics of Pultruded Composite Bridge Deck of Hollow Section)

  • 본 논문에서는 중공단면 형상의 유리섬유 강화 복합소재 교량바닥판의 개발에 관련된 연구 절차와 결과를 기술하였다. 설계된 3셀 단면에 대해 적층설계를 수행하였고, DB24 하중에 대한 플레이트 거더 복합소재 바닥판 교량의 유한요소해석을 통하여 처짐 사용성, 강도, 파괴 및 좌굴안정성 등의 구조적 특성을 평가하였다. 설계, 해석된 복합소재 바닥판 튜브는 인발성형으로 제작하였고, 구조적인 거동을 실험적으로 평가하기 위해 3점 휨시험, 거더 연결부시험, 방호벽 연결부시험을 실시하였고, DB24하중의 200만회 반복하중에 대해 압축피로시험, 휨피로시험 등 광범위한 구조성능시험을 실시하였다. 또한 시범시공된 복합소재 바닥판 플레이트 거더교량에 대한 현장 재하시험에서도 구조 안전성 및 사용성을 검토 하였다.

라텍스 개질 콘크리트 교량 교면 포장부 균열에 대한 수치해석 연구 (Numerical Investigation on Cracking of Bridge Deck Slabs with Latex Modified Concrete Overlays)

  • 라텍스개질콘크리트(LMC)는 일반 콘크리트에 비하여 인장강도와 내구성 등 개선된 재료 특성을 가지고 있으며, 따라서 교량 데크 슬래브의 생애주기를 증대시키기 위하여 교면 포장재로 많이 사용되고 있다. 이러한 사용에는 LMC 포장부와 콘크리트 모반 사이의 우수한 부착성능이 전제된다. 한편 교량 데크 슬래브의 구조적 성능을 향상시키기 위하여 고성능 콘크리트(HPC) 슬래브가 현재 사용되고 있다. 이 연구에서는 일반 콘크리트(NSC) 또는 HPC 교량 데크 슬래브에 타설된 LMC 포장부의 부착거동을 모사하기 위하여, 유한요소해석을 이용한 변수 연구가 수행되었다. 이 연구에서 콘크리트 모반의 수축, 강성, 균열강도와 LMC 포장부의 두께가 콘크리트-LMC 포장부의 균열 발생에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 수치해석연구 결과, HPC 슬래브는 높은 수축량과 강성으로 인하여 콘크리트-LMC 교면 포장부에 균열을 유발할 가능성이 높은 것으로 사료된다.

Extension of a semi-analytical approach to determine natural frequencies and mode shapes of a multi-span orthotropic bridge deck

  • This paper extends a single equation, semi-analytical approach for three-span bridges to multi-span ones for the rapid and precise determination of natural frequencies and natural mode shapes of an orthotropic, multi-span plate. This method can be used to study the dynamic interaction between bridges and vehicles. It is based on the modal superposition method taking into account intermodal coupling to determine natural frequencies and mode shapes of a bridge deck. In this paper, a four- and a five-span orthotropic roadway bridge deck are compared in the first 10 modes with a finite element method analysis using ANSYS software. This simplified implementation matches numerical modeling within 2% in all cases. This paper verifies that applicability of a single formula approach as a simpler alternative to finite element modeling.

콘크리트 교면 아스팔트포장의 구조적 거동 및 파손 (Structural Behavior and Distress of Asphalt Pavement on Concrete Bridge Decks)

  • 본 논문은 국내의 콘크리트 교면포장에 주로 발생하는 아스팔트 포장의 파손유형들에 대한 현황 분석과 교량 상판과 포장의 상호작용 해석을 실시하여 주된 파손유형을 제시하고자 한다 연구의 범위는 PSCI형교, 철근콘크리트 슬라브교와 라멘교를 각각 대상으로 하였다. 조사결과 콘크리트 교면 아스팔트 포장의 주요 파손들은 소성변형, 포트홀 그리고 피로균열 순으로 확인되었다. 또한 교면 아스팔트 포장에 발생되는 피로균열의 경우 주된 파손인자가 교통하중의 반복보다는 포장의 노후화나 재료의 박리와 같은 재료 문제로 추정되며 실제조사에서도 콘크리트 교량의 경우 미세한 파손의 빈도가 높고 박리가 있는 지점에서 균열이 상대적으로 많이 발생되었다.

P.S.C거더 교량의 적정 가로보 설계 (An Optimal Design of Cross Beam of P.S.C Girder Bridge)

  • A three-dimensional finite element dynamic analysis was conducted to evaluate the effects of reducing cross beams from a simply supported straight P.S.C girder bridge. Two analyses were performed on the P.S.C girder bridge; one with 7 cross beams which is commonly used as current standard, and the other with 3 cross beams. A frequency analysis was conducted first in order to establish the dynamic characteristics of the bridge and determine an appropriate time step to use in the time history analyses. To assess the function and effectiveness of the cross beams, time history analysis was conducted for aforementioned two analysis cases. In the analysis, the complete model was subjected to a loading condition corresponding to the one passing truck loading. Several results of deflection, bending moment and shear forces were compared for two cases. From the analysis results, reduction of cross beams was found to have only a minimum effect on the response of the bridge. The maximum deck slab bending moment was found to decrease. This decrease should result in smaller flexural crack widths in the deck slab, which may lead to an improved deck performance.
