Adsorption characteristics of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) by activated carbon fiber(ACF) were investigated using a continuous system for benzene, toluene, xylene(BTX) generation. Studied characteristics for adsorption were equilibrium capacity, accumulative adsorption, and breakthrough curve. Operating variables were adsorption temperature(25~45$^{\circ}C$) and partial pressure(1.2~12 mmHg) of BTX. The experimental results show that the adsorption equilibrium capacity increases with increasing partial pressure of BTX and decreases with increasing temperature. It was also found that the break point was decreased with increasing partial pressure, temperature and gas flow rate due to an effect of mass transfer of adsorbate.
Adsorption of phenol on activated carbon in a fixed bed was studied. The effects of fixed-bed length, superficial velocity (flow rate) and particle size of adsorbent on fixed-bed performance were investigated. Some characteristic parameters such as the breakthrough time ($t_{0.05}$), saturation time ($t_{0.95}$), length of mass transfer zone ($L_{MTZ}$), adsorptive capacity (W), and adsorption rate constant ($K_a$) were derived from the breakthrough curves. Adsorbent particle sizes significantly affected the shape of the breakthrough curve. Larger particle sizes resulted in an earlier breakthrough, a longer $L_{MTZ}$ and a lower adsorption rate. Superficial velocity was a critical factor for the external mass transfer during fixed-bed adsorption process. The external mass transfer resistance was dominant as increasing superficial velocity.
The influencing factors to remove phosphate were evaluated by converter slag (CS). Experiments were performed by batch tests using different CS sizes and column test. Solutions were prepared at the different pH and concentrations. The maximum removal efficiency was obtained over 98% with the finest particle size, $CS_a$ within 2 hours in batch tests. The removal efficiency was increased in the order of decreasing size with same amount of CS for any pH of solutions. The adsorption data were well fitted to Freundlich isotherm. From the column experiment, the specific factors were revealed that the breakthrough removal capacity (BRC) $x_b/m_{cs}$, was decreased by increasing the influent concentration. The breakthrough time, tb was lasted shorter as increasing the influent concentration. The pH drop simultaneously led to lower BRC drop during the experimental hours. The relation between the breakthrough time and the BRC to influent concentration was shown in the logarithmic decrease. Results suggested that the large surface area of CS possessed a great potential for adsorptive phosphate removal. Consequently particle size and initial concentration played the major influencing factors in phosphate removal by converter slag.

Most breakthrough tests are conducted at higher concentration levels compared to those in the field of air-purifying respirator applications. For example, typical challenge concentrations for breakthrough tests agains tcarbon tetrachloride are ranged between 250-1000 ppm although applicable concentrations range for air-purifying cartridge is 5-50 ppm for carbon tetrachloride. However, no guarantee has been made that isotherms derived from the experiment at high challenge concentrations could estimate adsorption capacity at the lower concentration range where workers wear usually air-purifying respirators. Three models of adsorption isotherms (Freundlich, Langmuir and Dubinin/Radushkevich(D/R) isotherms) that have been commonly applied for respirator cartridge testing were evaluated. Adsorption capacity at each challenge concentration was calculated from the Reaction Kinetic equation fitted for the breakthrough data. These data were used for derivation of three isotherms. In general, the D/R isotherm has given the best agreement between estimated adsorption capacities and experimentally measured. If the challenge concentration of 100 ppm is included for derivation of models, Freundlich and D/R models could succes sfully produced good estimations for adsorption capacities at 50 ppm level. Estimated adsorption capacities by both models ranged in 94 - 109 % of the experimentally measured. However, Langmuir model gives underes timation in all cases.
The purpose of this work is to present the experiment results by a dynamic adsorption of water vapor on pelletized zeolites (ADZ300, ADZ400, and ADZ500) in fixed bed. The breakthrough curves of water vapor with several different concentrations and temperature in the range of 25~45 $^{\circ}C$ on zeolite bed were investigated. In the same conditions, the breakthrough time on ADZ400 and ADZ500 were little longer than ADZ300, and the equilibrium adsorption capacity on ADZ500 was highest. The higher the concentration of water vapor was, the faster the breakthrough time was, and the slope of breakthrough curves showed a tendency to increase. The faster the flow rate of water vapor was, the faster the breakthrough time was relatively, but variations between flow rate and breakthrough time did not have a proportional relationship. The breakthrough curve maintained constant gradient in spite of variation of flow rate in the same concentration. The temperature rise in zeolite bed by adsorption heat was occurred in the early stage of adsorption. After water molecule layers were formed on the surface of zeolite, the temperature was slowly cooled by water vapors continuously flowed in as constant temperature. The greater the concentration of water vapor and adsorption temperature were, the temperature difference in zeolite bed was increased.

This study is to investigate the correlation between pore structures of activated carbons and adsorption characteristics of acetone vapor using the dynamic adsorption method. The experimental results showed that the breakthrough time of ACT activated carbon made by Takeda was the longest, because ACT has more micropores below pore diametr $10{\AA}$ than the compared activated carbons. The equilibrium adsorption capacity had direct correlation to the breakthrough time. The relation between BET specific surface area and the equilibrium adsorption capacity was hard to say linear. Therefore, it was difficult to estimate the adsorption ability of activated carbons only by BET specific surface area. The correlation factor between the cumulative surface area and the equilibrium adsorption capacity decreased with enlarging the range of pore size, and there was the highest correlation factor in the range of below $10{\AA}$.
Effects of operating parameters on the breakthrough properties of Pb(II) by $Mn_3O_4$ coated activated carbon prepared by supercritical technique were investigated through fixed-bed column experiments. The mass transfer zone and equilibrium adsorption capacity were enhanced about 2.8 times for Pb(II) by $Mn_3O_4$ coating onto activated carbon. Increase of bed height enhanced the residence time of Pb(II) in adsorption zone, giving the higher breakthrough time, mass transfer zone and equilibrium adsorption capacity. Increase of flow rate reduced the residence time and diffusion of Pb(II) in adsorption zone, therefore decreased the equilibrium adsorption capacity. The higher inlet concentration of Pb(II) decreased the breakthrough time and mass transfer zone through the promotion of Pb(II) transfer onto adsorbent.

This article presents studies of the adsorption process in a continuous system of fluoride solutions at a concentration of 30 mg/L using a bone char packed in fixed-bed columns, as well as regeneration studies in the same system using HNO3, HCl and NaOH at 0.01, 0.1 and 1 M. The Thomas Model, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Numerical Integration and Mass Transfer Zone were used for the modeling of asyemmetrical breakthrough curves obtained from the fluoride adsorption on bone char. The maximum adsorption capacity of the breakthrough curves was estimated, and various design parameters of the columns were obtained for the different operating conditions. Results showed that an improvement in the modeling capabilities of the Thomas model can be obtained using ANNs. Moreover, ANNs are useful for determining reasonable and accurate design parameters of packed-bed adsorption columns. This modeling approach can be useful for the process system engineering of dynamic adsorption systems involved in the field of water treatment and purification. It is important to highlight that the obtained results indicate that, when using HCl or HNO3 at a concentration of 0.1 M, a large number of adsorption-desorption cycles are obtained and, therefore, the highest values of adsorption capacity, which leads to a reduction in operation costs.
We investigated uranium adsorption and adsorption process characteristics in brine water, changing column bed height packed with amidoximated polypropylene-g- acrylonitrile (AOPP-g-AN) fibrous ion-exchanger. Swelling ratios of AOPP-g-AN in fibrous ion-exchanger were 8.54g/g $H_2O_2$ and 8.87 g/g for $H_2O_2$ solvent respectively. Ion exchange capacity increased with degree of graft and showed the maximum, 3.99 meq/g at 100% degree of graft. In batch process, uranium adsorption had reached an initial equilibrium in 10 min with the adsorption rate of 9.5 mg/min. Finial adsorption capacity was 3.95 meq/g, and pH effect could not be observed. In continuous process, adsorption capacity depended on various packing ratios and showed the maximum, 3.92 meq/g at L/D=1. In L/D<2, breakthrough curve was shown two step by channeling flow and ununiform adsorption. Breakthrough time and adsorption capacity were 26 min and 3.63 meq/g, respectively, in brine water adsorption. When compared with actual brine water and model solution, there was no significant difference of adsorption characteristics.
Granular activated carbon is commonly used in fixed-bed adsorbers to remove organic chemicals. In this experiment organic chemical solutions were prepared by adding the reagent grade organic chemical to distilled water. Isotherm adsorption tests of volatile organic chemicals were conducted using bottle-point technique and column test. Organic chemicals after passing through the column were extracted with hexane and analyzed with gas chromatography (Hewlett-Packard 5890) to check the adsorption capacity and breakthrough curve. The result were as follows: 1. The BET surface area of coconut activated carbon was 658~1,010 m$^2$/g where as coconut shell carbon was 6.6 m$^2$/g. Coconut activated carbon increased the BET surface area and adsorption capacity in bottle-point isotherm. 2. The adsorption capacity of coconut activated carbon for trichloroethylene (TCE) was reduced in the presence of humic substance. 3. A decrease in particle size of activated carbon resulted in higher adsorption capacity and lower intraparticle diffusion coefficient. It is reflected not only as a decrease in Freudlich adsorption capacity value (K) but also as an increase in Freudlich exponenent value (1/n).
