  • The growth of tree is affected by voltage, frequency, temperature, mechanical stress, etc.. This paper describes the effect of applied voltage on the growth of tree in DGEBA/MDA/GN(10 phr) system. As applied voltage increased, the time to breakdown of the system reduced. As applied time increased, the tree length of X-axis increased with sigmoid shape, however, the tree length of Y-axis increased sharply at the initial step and then were nearly constant. The phenomena of tree were complicated more and more, as applied time increased.

  • The microstructure, electrical and dielectric properties, and stability against DC accelerated aging stress of the varistors, which are composed of quaternary system $ZnO-Pr_6O_{11}CoO-Cr_2O_3-based$ ceramics, were investigated for different $La_2O_3$ contents. The increase of $La_2O_3$ content led to more densified ceramics, whereas abruptly decreased the nonlinear properties by incorporating beyond 1.0mol%. The highest nonlinearity was obtained from 0.5mol% $La_2O_3$, with the nonlinear coefficient of 81.6 and the leakage current of $0.1{\mu}A$. The varistors doped with 0.5mol% $La_2O_3$ exhibited high stability, in which the variation rates of breakdown voltage, nonlinear coefficient, leakage current, dielectric constant, and dissipation factor were -1.1%, -3.7%, +100%, +1.4%, and +8.2%, respectively, for stressing state of $0.95V_{1mA}/150^{\circ}C/24h$.

  • In recent years, there has been a growth of the manufacture and application of magnesium products because of its small specific gravity as well as its relatively high strength. However, there are so many studies to assure good formability because magnesium sheet alloy is difficult to form. In this study, uniaxial tensile and biaxial tensile test of AZ31 magnesium sheet alloy with thickness of 1.2mm were performed at room temperature. Uniaxial tensile test were performed until $7\%$ of engineering strain. R-values and stress-strain curve were obtained. Biaxial tensile tests with cruciform specimen were performed until the breakdown of the specimen occurs. The yield loci are made by application of plastic work theory. The results are compared with the theoretical predictions based on the Hill and Logan-Hosford model. However, next study will be performed at warm-temperature because the specimens are broken under the $0.5\%$ of equivalent strain at biaxial tensile test.

  • The effects of additives (Cr, Nb, Dy, and Bi) on microstructure, electrical properties, dielectric characteristics, and aging behavior of $ZnO-V_2O_5-MnO_2-Co_3O_4-La_2O_3$ (ZVMCL) ceramics were systematically investigated. The phase formed in common for all ZVMCL ceramics modified with various additives consisted of ZnO grain as a main phase, and $Zn_3(VO_4)_2$ and $ZnV_2O_4$ as the secondary phases. The sintered density and average grain size were in the range of $5.4-5.54g/cm^3$ and $3.7-5.1{\mu}m$, respectively. The ZVMCL ceramics modified with Cr exhibited the highest breakdown field (6,386 V/cm) and the ZVMCL ceramics modified with Nb exhibited the lowest breakdown field (3,517 V/cm). All additives enhanced the nonlinear coefficient (${\alpha}$), by a small or large margin, in particular, additives such as Bi and Nb noticeably increased the nonlinear coefficient, with ${\alpha}=25.5$ and ${\alpha}=23$, respectively. However, on the whole, all additives did not improve the stability against a DC stress, compared with ZVMCL ceramics.

  • Electrical insulation and mechanical properties of the plasma sprayed oxide ceramic coatings were studied before and after the sealing treatment of the ceramic coatings. Plasma sprayed A1$_2$O$_3$-TiO$_2$ coating as the reference coating was sealed using three commercial sealants based on polymer. Penetration depth of the sealants to the ceramic coating was evaluated directly from the optical microscope using a fluorescent dye. It is estimated that the penetration depth of the sealants to the ceramic coating is from 0.2 to 0.5 mm depending on the sealants used. The preliminary test results with a DC puncture tester imply that the dielectric breakdown voltage mechanism of plasma sprayed ceramic coatings has been determined to be a corona mechanism. Dielectric breakdown voltage of the as-sprayed and as-ground samples have shown a linear trend with regard to the thickness showing an average dielectric strength of 20 kV/mm for the thickness scale studied. It is also shown that grinding the coating before sealing and adding fluorescent dye do not agent the penetration depth of sealants. All of the microhardness, two-body abrasive wear resistance, bond strength, and surface roughness of the ceramic coating after the sealing treatment are improved. The extent of improvement is different from the sealants used. However, three-point bending stress of the ceramic coating after the sealing treatment is decreased. This is attributed to the reduced micro-crack toughening effect since the cracks propagate easily through the lamellar of the coating without crack deflection and/or branching after the sealing treatment.

  • Time-dependent flow properties of mustard pastes were measured at various total solid contents $(TS,\;18{\sim}30%)$ and shear rates $(15{\sim}25\;s^{-1})$ using a Haake concentric cylinderical viscometer. Experimental data of the stress decay with time of shearing were fitted to three mathematical models proposed by Weltman, Figoni and Shoemaker, and Hahn. Time-dependent flow behaviour of mustard paste increased with increase in TS, but was found to vary in the range of shear rate investigated. Time-dependent model of Weltman was found to be most applicable $(average\;R^2=0.96)$ for mustard paste. Shear stresses for structure breakdown increased with increase in TS, while the structure breakdown rate decreased.

  • Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) is the second enzyme involved in the breakdown of acetaldehyde into acetic acid during the process of alcohol metabolism. Roughly 40% of East Asians carry one or two ALDH2*2 alleles, and the presence of ALDH2 genetic mutations in individuals may affect the bone remodeling cycle owing to accumulation of acetaldehyde in the body. In this study, we investigated the effects of ALDH2 mutations on bone remodeling. In this study, we examined the effects of ALDH2 polymorphisms on in vitro osteogensis using human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). We differentiated wild-type (ALDH2*1/*1-) and ALDH2*1/*2-genotyped hiPSCs into osteoblasts (OBs) and confirmed their OB characteristics. Acetaldehyde was administered to confirm the impact caused by the mutation during OB differentiation. Calcium deposits formed during osteogenesis were significantly decreased in ALDH2*1/*2 OBs. The expression of osteogenic markers were also decreased in acetaldehyde-treated OBs differentiated from the ALDH2*1/*2 hiPSCs. Furthermore, the impact of ALDH2 polymorphism and acetaldehyde-induced stress on inflammatory factors such as 4-hydroxynonenal and tumor necrosis factor α was confirmed. Our findings suggest that individuals with ALDH2 deficiency may face challenges in acetaldehyde breakdown, rendering them susceptible to disturbances in normal bone remodeling therefore, caution should be exercised regarding alcohol consumption. In this proof-of-concept study, we were able to suggest these findings as a result of a disease-in-a-dish concept using hiPSCs derived from individuals bearing a certain mutation. This study also shows the potential of patient-derived hiPSCs for disease modeling with a specific condition.

  • Source parameters for forty four earthquakes which occurred in and around the Korean Peninsula were determined and the relations between them were studied. Snoke's method (Snoke, 1987) was applied in determining the corner frequencies and seismic moments. In general, the source parameters estimated at different stations for an earthquake show different values. These disagreements have been interpreted as originating, in principle, from an inadequate consideration of the source radiation pattern and direction dependent attenuation and amplification. The comer frequencies and seismic moments were averaged to exclude the such directional effects. Other source parameters were estimated from the mean corner frequency and seismic moment. The static stress drops, determined in this study, tend to be independent of seismic moment for events greater than a specific magnitude. For earthquakes with a size less than about $1.0{\times}10^{22}$ dyne-cm (nearly same as $M_L = 4.0$), the stress drop tends to decrease with the decreasing moment. This fact suggests a breakdown of the scaling law of source parameters in earthquakes below the threshold magnitude.

  • Zinc ion has both essential and toxic effects on mammalian cells. The results demonstrated that the ability of zinc to act as an inducer of apoptosis in C6 glial cells. Incubation with 0.2 mM ZnCl₂ caused cell death that was characterized as apoptosis by internucleosomal DNA fragmentation, formation of apoptotic bodies, nuclear fragmentation and breakdown of the mitochondrial membrane potential. ZnCl₂-induced apoptosis of C6 glial cells was prevented by the addition of Sibjeondaebo-Tang and antioxidants including reduced glutathione, N-acetyl-L-cysteine. We further confirmed that ZnCl₂ decreased the intracellular levels of GSH as well as generation of H₂O₂ in C6 glial cells. In 2D-electrophoresis, computer-assisted comparative analysis of the respective silver stained spot patterns revealed 3 groups with strongly decreased intensity by ZnCl₂. Whereas, 3 groups with increasing intensity were recovered by Sibjeondaebo-Tang. These results suggest that Sibjeondaebo-Tang may function as an antioxidant against free radicals and be applicable to the treatment of brain cells against oxidative stress.

  • Nuclear power plants (NPP) using Alloy 600 (Ni 75wt%, Cr 15wt%, Fe 10wt%) as a heat exchanger tube of the steam generator (SG) have experienced various corrosion problems by ageing such as pitting, intergranular attack (IGA) and stress corrosion cracking (SCC). In spite of much effort to reduce the material degradations, SCC is still one of important problems to overcome. Especially lead is known to be one of the most deleterious species in the secondary system that cause SCC of the alloy. Even Alloy 690 (Ni 60wt%, Cr 30wt%, Fe 10wt%) as an alternative of Alloy 600 because of outstanding superiority to SCC is also susceptible to leaded environment. An oxide on SG tubing materials such as Alloy 600 and Alloy 690 is formed and modified expanding to complex sludge throughout hideout return (HOR) of various impurities including Pb. Oxide formation and breakdown is requisite for SCC initiation and propagation. Therefore it is expected that an oxide property such as a passivity of an oxide formed on steam generator tubing materials is deeply related to PbSCC and an inhibitor to hinder oxide modification by lead efficiently can be found. In the present work, the SCC susceptibility obtained by using a slow strain rate test (SSRT) in aqueous solutions with and without lead was discussed in view of the oxide property. The oxides formed on Alloy 600 and Alloy 690 in aqueous solutions with and without lead were examined by using a transmission electron microscopy (TEM), an energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), an x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
