The curing behavior, mechanical properties, hot-air aging resistance, abrasion properties, thermal properties, etc., of EVM/EPM/APP (ammonium polyphosphate)/DPER (dipentaerythritol)/EG (expandable graphite) and EVM/EPM/ATH (aluminium trihydroxide) flame retarding systems in ethylene vinyl acetate rubber (EVM) blends with EPM (ethylene propylene rubber) were sequentially examined. For both flame retarding systems, the torque values increased with the content of EPM rubber and with the vulcanization time. As the content of EPM rubber increased, the scorch time became shorter, whereas the optimum cure time followed an increasing trend. For the EVM/EPM/APP/DPER/EG flameretarding system, as the content of EPM rubber increased, the hardness did not change, whereas the tensile strength and elongation at break decreased. A hot-air aging resistance test at $150^{\circ}C$ showed that the heat resistance decreased with the EPM content regardless of the kinds and contents of flame retardants. As the EPM content increased, the abrasion rate became higher and the abrasion resistance of the EVM/EPM/APP/DPER/EG flame retarding systems exceeded that of the EVM/EPM/ATH flame retarding counterparts. In comparison with the EVM/EPM/ATH flame retarding systems, the thermal stability of the EVM/EPM/APP/DPER/EG flame retarding system showed an increasing tendency.
Poly(alkyl acrylate-g-caprolactone) graft copolymers were prepared, and they were applied as compatibilizing agents for polycarbonate (PC) / poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) blends. The incompatible poly(alkyl acrylate) segment was incorporated into the graft copolymer in order to localize the copolymer at the PC/ABS interface. The blend containing 1 phr of the copolymer showed remarkable improvement in impact strength as well as in elongation at break. Impact improvement was more pronounced with a thinner test specimens of 1/8 inch thickness. Morphological study showed that the presence of the graft copolymer led to a smoother PC/ABS interface due to the interfacial enrichment of the graft copolymer.
In this study, we investigated for synthetic hydrotalcite in chloroprene rubber foam. Experiments were carried out to find the optimum content ratio by controlling the contents of MgO and Hydrotalcite. Swelling test in toluene immersion was made to measure the crosslinking density of CR foams, and the cure properties were investigated with flat die rheometer and Mooney viscosity. The difference of hardness, tensile strength and elongation at break were observed after immersing in 7% NaCl or 21% NaCl solutions for a day and four days. In addition, the volume change and water content remaining in CR foam were measured after immersing NaCl solution. As content of MgO increased, the value of the cure torque tended to increase, but it was almost constant above 2phr of MgO. However, the Mooney viscosity decreased with increasing MgO content. The crosslinking density, determined by the swelling ratio, showed that the CR compound without MgO showed a higher degree of swelling. When the content of hydrotalcite/MgO was 3:2, it was the lowest volume change of CR form. Also, As the content of hydrotalcite decreased, the difference of mechanical properties before and after immersion NaCl solution increased.

Titanium and titanium alloy can be reproduced immediately even if oxide films($TiO_2$) break apart in sea water. Therefore, since titanium demonstrates large specific strength and outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, pitting and microbiologically influenced corrosion in sea water environment, it has been widely applied to heat exchanger for ships. In particular, with excellent elongation, pure titanium may be deemed as optimal material for production of heat exchanger plate which is used with wrinkles formed for efficient heat exchange. Conventional plate type heat exchanger prevented leakage of liquid through insertion of gasket between plates and mechanical tightening by bolts and nuts, but in high temperature and high pressure environment, gasket deterioration and leakage occur, so heat exchanger for LPG re-liquefaction device etc do not use gasket but weld heat exchanger plate for use. On the other hand, since welded plate cannot be separated, it is important to obtain high quality reliable welds. In addition, for better workability and production performance, lasers that can obtain weldment with large aspect ratio and demonstrate fast welding speed even in atmospheric condition not in vacuum condition are used in producing products. So far, 1st report and 2nd report compared and analyzed embrittlement degrees by bead colors of weldment through quantitative analysis of oxygen and nitrogen and measurement of hardness as fundamental experiment for the evaluation of titanium laser welding, and evaluated the welding performance and mechanical properties of butt welding. This study welded specimens in various conditions by using laser and GTA welding machine to apply edge welding to heat exchanger, and evaluated the mechanical strength through tensile stress test. As a result of tensile test, laser weldment demonstrated tensile strength 4 times higher than GTA welds, and porosity could be controlled by increasing and decreasing slope of laser power at overlap area.
Fracture behaviors of polycarbonate (PC)/polyestrercarbonate (PEC) blends and their miscibility have been examined to find out the mechanism of ductilie-brittle transition of fracture behavior which would be a main governing factor on the thickness sensitivity of impact strength of PC. $T_g$ measurement showed that PEC with a carbonate content higher than 30 mol% was miscible with PC. In the notched Izod impact test of PC, ductile-brittle transition occurred in the range of 4 to 5 mm thickness. The impact strength of miscible PC/PEC5 blends ductile-fractured in the thin specimens decreased with increasing PEC5 content, which was in accordance with the decrease of elongation at break in tensile test. In the brittle fracture of the thick specimens, the impact strength was well correlated with the plastic zone size in the vicinity of the notch tip.
ZnAl-LDH(layered double hydroxide) modified with oleic acid(SO-ZnAl LDH) was synthesized and added to the flame retardant ABS compounds containing brominated epoxy resin(BER) and antimony trioxide(${Sb_2}{O_3}$). Flame retardant ABS compounds were manufactured by using a twin-screw co-rotating extruder and subsequently injection molded into several specimen for flame retardancy and mechanical properties. The XRD patterns of ABS nanocomposites showed no peaks. The thermal stability of ABS nanocomposites was enhanced by the addition of SO-ZnAl LDH as shown in TGA results. However, these nanocomposites showed no rating in the UL 94 vertical test at 1.6 mm thickness. Only ABS nanocomposites with additional BER more than 1.5 wt% showed UL 94 V0 rating. Notched Izod impact strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at break of flame retardant ABS nanocomposites increased with the proportion of So-ZnAl LDH whereas their melt index decreased.

Inorganic micropowder(Ce500)-filled polyurethane composite foams were fabricated and the effects of postcure on the mechanical properties were studied by the measurement of polymerization temperature, TGA, and UTM test. Temperature for the maximum reaction rate of 20wt% Ce500-filled sample reached upto ca. $100^{\circ}$ within 10min. and, for the same sample, double mode thermal decomposition was observed around two distinguished temperatures of $250^{\circ}$ and $350^{\circ}C$. The activation energies for the decomposition were calculated using Kissinger method as 117.4 and 139.4 kJ/mol, respectively. While break strength and hardness of the sample seemed nearly affected by postcure time at $160^{\circ}C$, elongation, however, was significantly changed upto 1.72 times after 7hrs treatment. As the results, the condition of 7hrs at $160^{\circ}$ was considered as the optimum postcure condition for the Ce500-filled PU composite foam samples.
This study aimed to develop a two-component TSL suitable for reducing dust and guaranteeing homogeneous qualities during its spraying. Its performance was evaluated by a series of laboratory and field tests. High ductility of two-component TSL prototypes resulted in increasing their elongation at break even though their tensile strengths were slightly lower than those of one-component powder TSLs. One prototype of the two-component TSLs developed in this study was verified to satisfy every criterion specified by EFNARC (2008). Especially, it increased the average compressive strength of mortar specimens by 50% even when it coated them only with the thickness of 3 mm. From a preliminary spraying test, a spraying machine suitable for the developed TSL prototype was derived and modified. After its field application, dust and rebound generated during its spraying works were found to be very minimal. Its spraying rate was recorded to be approximately $60m^2/hr$. In addition, it showed a very rapid hardening characteristic compared with general sprayable waterproofing membranes.
Polycaprolactone (PCL) was blended with corn starch to produce biodegradable compost films and the biodegradability and mechanical properties were investigated. As the compatibilizer for the immiscible PCL/starch blend, 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA)-PCL macromer was grafted onto starch by initially grafting HEMA to starch and then grafting of PCL onto HEMA via ring opening polymerization of $\varepsilon$-caprolactone. When biodegradability of the PCL grafted starch-g-DEMA copolymers was compared with that of starch by the modified Sturm test, graft copolymers degraded at much slower rates due to the presence of the non-degradable HEMA. With the addition of the graft copolymer up to 5 wt% to the blend, the elongation-at-break of the starch/PCL blend increased substantially, while the tensile strength and modulus did not change much. SEM observation of the blend containing 2 wt% copolymer clearly indicated that the interfacial adhesion between the starch and PCL was strengthened by the copolymer.
This work attempted to fabricate organic/inorganic nanocomposite by combining organic cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), isolated by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxy radical (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation of native cellulose with inorganic nanoclay. The morphology and dimension of CNFs, and tensile properties and thermal stability of CNF/clay nanocomposites were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), tensile test, and thermogravimetry (TG), respectively. TEM observation showed that CNFs were fibrillated structure with a diameter of about $4.86{\pm}1.341nm$. Tensile strength and modulus of the hybrid nanocomposite decreased as the clay content of the nanocomposite increased, indicating a poor dispersion of CNFs or inefficient stress transfer between the CNFs and clay. The elongation at break increased at 1% clay level and then continuously decreased as the clay content increased, suggesting increased brittleness. Analysis of TG and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) curves of the nanocomposites identified two thermal degradation peak temperatures ($T_{p1}$ and $T_{p2}$), which suggested thermal decomposition of the nanocomposites to be a two steps-process. We think that $T_{p1}$ values from $219.6^{\circ}C$ to $235^{\circ}C$ resulted from the sodium carboxylate groups in the CNFs, and that $T_{p2}$ values from $267^{\circ}C$ to $273.5^{\circ}C$ were mainly responsible for the thermal decomposition of crystalline cellulose in the nanocomposite. An increase in the clay level of the CNF/clay nanocomposite predominately affected $T_{p2}$ values, which continuously increased as the clay content increased. These results indicate that the addition of clay improved thermal stability of the CNF/clay nanocomposite but at the expense of nanocomposite's tensile properties.
