Friction characteristics of the brake friction materials without environmentally regulated ingredients were examined to find their role in the brake performance. Five friction materials were produced based on a nearcommercial formulation by changing the relative amount of potentially hazardous ingredients to health and environment, such as $Sb_2S_3$, potassium titanate, and brass fiber. Tribological properties of the friction materials were obtained using a scale dynamometer and Krauss type tribometer. Results showed that the excluded three ingredients played important synergetic effects on tribological properties in terms of fade resistance, wear resistance and friction effectiveness. In particular, brass fibers played important roles in the friction stability by providing excellent thermal diffusivity at the friction interface. Potassium titanate whiskers showed excellent fade resistance and wear resistance compared to the substituted barite. Antimony trisulfide, on the other hand, showed little effect on the high temperature fade resistance and wear resistance, while it increased friction effectiveness at moderate temperatures. The friction materials without the three ingredients showed severe fade, indicating antisynergy effects.

Automotive brake pads with four different sizes of zircon particles (average sizes of 1㎛, 6㎛, 75㎛, and 140㎛, respectively) were investigated to evaluate the size effect of abrasive particles on friction performance. Results showed that the brake pads with the larger size of zircon particles tend to show better frictional stability and low pad wear. However, the rotor surface was severely abraded in the case of using larger zircon particles. On the other hand, the small zircon particles in the pads showed the fast increase of the coefficient of friction with friction force oscillation and the tendency was pronounced at low sliding speeds. The brake pads with small particle sizes also exhibited strong fade phenomena at elevated temperatures.

Influences of carbonaceous ingredient as a solid lubricant in automotive friction materials on friction properties were studied. Three types of carbonaceous ingredients such as natural graphite, artificial graphite, and cokes were mixed using a constrained mixture design. A 1/5 scale brake dynamometer was used to obtain tribological properties. Results showed that cokes substantially increased the friction coefficient, and natural graphite effectively reduced stick-slip phenomena. This significant difference was attributed to the formation of the friction film on the brake pad which was shown to be strongly dependent on the graphite types. The different crystal structures of the carbonaceous solid lubricants played a significant role in the formation of friction film at the interface.

It has many variables and factors to design the friction materials for automotive brake pads. The purpose of this study is to develop the proper method for design of low-cost and to know friction characteristics of each raw materials. For the purpose of examining the effect of each major raw materials, we used the Taguchi L9(3$^4$)orthogonal matrix and 1/5 scale dynamo machine for evaluation of the friction characteristics of composite brake pads. By adapting the Taguchi method, it is easy to investigate the influence of each component in complicated composites friction materials. After analyzing the testing results by the Taguchi method, the effect of factors and levels influenced friction behavior was studied.
The parking brake embedded in track driving motor for driving an excavator is composed of wet type multi-friction discs. This type parking brake can be designed more compact because the combination of some sheets of friction discs generate great braking power, and also it has good braking characteristic and long life time because it works in the oil. In this study, we analyzed torque characteristic of the parking brake through simulations and performed experiments by use of 3-kinds of paper friction sheet manufactured by different pressing methods. And, we compared the maximum static friction coefficient and torque characteristic with the simulation results and confirmed the optimal manufacturing process through this result.

It has many variables and factors to design the friction materials for automotive brake pads. In this study, the friction and wear characteristics of automotive blake pads have been studied using 1:l full size dynamo meter. Using conventional manners, it takes a great of time and efforts to know that it affects the each raw materials for friction characteristics. For the purpose of examining the effect of each major raw materials, we used the more convenient Taguchi L9 ($3^4$) orthogonal matrix and 1/5 scale dynamo machine for evaluation of the friction characteristics of composite brake pads.
Frictional characteristics of two different types of automotive friction materials were studied. They were non-asbestos organic and semi-metallic friction materials. The two friction materials were tested using an inertial brake dynamometer to investigate friction stability, rooster tailing phenomena, temperature change during drags and stops. Results show that the level of the friction force is strong functions of time, temperature, and speed regardless of the type of friction materials. In particular, rooster tailing effects are pronounced in the case of semi-metallic friction materials compared to non-asbestos organic friction materials. The phenomena appear strongly dependent on raw materials contained in the friction materials.
Asbestos is being replaced throughout the world among friction materials because of its carcinogenic nature. This has raised an important issue of heat dissipation in the non-asbestos brake pad materials being developed for automobiles etc. It has been found that two of the components i.e. carbon fibres as reinforcement and graphite powder as friction modifier, in the brake pad material, can playa vital role in this direction. The study reports the influence of these modifications on the thermal properties like coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal conductivity along with the mechanical properties of nonasbestos brake pad composite samples developed in the laboratory.
The friction characteristics of automotive brake friction materials that contained different ceramic content were investigated. Several kinds of raw materials, such as resin-based binder, reinforcing fiber, friction restraint, abrasive, and filling materials were mixed, pressed, and heated in order to make the brake friction materials. The contents of SiC and $BaSO_4$ changed from 5 vol% to 20 vol%, respectively. In addition to this, the content of $Al_2O_3$ adjusted from 1 vol% to 16 vol%. The surface morphology of the SiC containing sample appeared rough while more debris was observed when the contents of SiC increased. This implies that the SiC containing brake composite was not adequate for the automobile. However, the relatively smooth surface was observed in samples that contained the $Al_2O_3$. But the roughness was low with a content of 11 vol% $Al_2O_3$ compared to the other samples. This is consistent with the abrasive properties of the samples. In the case of $BaSO_4$ containing samples, the smoothes surface was observed in the contents of 15 vol% $BaSO_4$. Thus, it was concluded that the 11 vol% $Al_2O_3$ and 15 vol% $BaSO_4$ containing composite would be the optimum content for the brake composite. Similar to the results of the surface morphology, the abrasion resistance consistently decreased when the content of SiC increased. On the contrary, the sample that contained 11 vol% $Al_2O_3$ and 15 vol% $BaSO_4$ showed the highest abrasion resistance compared to the other samples.
Frictional behavior of three automotive friction materials (brake pads) containing different amounts of antimony trisulfide ($Sb_2S_3$) and zirconium silicate ($ZRSiO_4$) were investigated using a front brake system. The friction materials were tested on a brake dynamometer (dyno) with gray cast iron rotors. The dynamometer(dyno) test simulated the dragging of a ehicle maintaining 70 km/h and vehicle stops from 100 km/h using 20 different combinations of initial brake temperature (IBT) and input pressure (IP). The results showed a strong influence of the relative amount of $Sb_2S_3$ and $ZrSiO_4$ in friction materials on friction characteristics. Friction stability was improved with the higher concentration of $Sb_2S_3$ in the friction material. Torque variation during drag cycle was increased with an increase of the $ZrSiO_4$ concentration in the friction material. Average friction coefficient and the wear rate of the friction material increased by using more aggressive friction materials containing more $ZrSiO_4$ and less $Sb_2S_3$. Generation of the disk thickness variation (DTV) increased when friction materials with higher concentration of $ZrSiO_4$ were used Careful examination of DTV change showed that aggressiveness of the friction material played an important role in determining torque variation.
