The transition metal salt doped solid polymer electrolyte [TSPE] were prepared with HPMC as a host polymer. The virgin and doped films were prepared by solution-casting method and investigated using wide angle X-ray scattering method. Micro structural parameters like lattice strain (g%), stacking/twin faults, the average number of unit cells counted in a direction perpendicular to the Bragg's plane (hkl) spacing of (hkl) planes dhkl, crystallite size Ds, distortion width, standard deviation were determined by whole pattern powder fitting (WPPF) method, which is an extension of single order method. It is found that the crystallite size decreases with the increase in the content of $FeCl_3$. This decrease is due to increase in localized breaking of polymer network which also accounts for the amorphous nature of the material. The filler inorganic salt $FeCl_3$ acts as plasticizer. FTIR study also confirms and justifies the interaction between the polymer and in-organic salt in the matrix. Physical properties like mechanical stability and Ac conductivity in these films are in conformity with the X-ray results.
Glass fibre reinforced polymers (GFRP) are widely exploited in many industrial branches. Due to this Structural Health Monitoring systems containing embedded fibre optics sensors are applied. One of the problems that can influence on composite element durability is water contamination that can be introduced into material structure during manufacturing. Such inclusion can be a damage origin significantly decreasing mechanical properties of an element. A non-destructive method that can be applied for inspection of an internal structure of elements is THz spectroscopy. It can be used for identifications of material discontinuities that results in changes of absorption, refractive index or scattering of propagating THz waves. The limitations of THz propagation through water makes this technique a promising solution for detection of a water inclusion. The paper presents an application of THz spectroscopy for detection and localisation of a water drop inclusion embedded in a GFRP material between two fibre optics with fibre Bragg grating sensors. The proposed filtering method allowed to determine a 3D shape of the water drop.

Surface dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD), which is widely used to control turbulence in aerodynamics, has a significant effect on the radar cross-section (RCS). A four-way linearly synthesized SDBD air plasma actuator is designed to bolster the plasma effects on electromagnetic waves. The diffraction angle is calculated to predict the RCS because of the periodic structure of staggered electrodes. The simplified plasma modeling is utilized to calculate the inhomogeneous surface plasma distribution. Monostatic RCS shows the diffraction in the plane perpendicular to the electrode array and the notable distortion by plasma. In comparison, the overall pattern is maintained in the parallel plane with minor plasma effects. The trends also appear in the bistatic RCS, which has a significant difference in the observation plane perpendicular to the electrodes. The peaks by Bragg's diffraction are shown, and the RCS is reduced by 10 dB in a certain range by the plasma effect. The diffraction caused by the actuator and the inhomogeneous air plasma should be considered in designing an SDBD actuator for a wide range of application.
The absorbed dose for proton beam in water was calculated using the PTRAN code system. The proton interactions with water and the description on absorbed dose calculations are discussed, and the file structure and an execution example of the PTRAN codes are described. For 60, 100, 150, 200, and 250 MeV proton beams it is demonstrated that the absorbed dose is determined from the sum of Coulomb interactions and nuclear reactions, and that the Bragg peak feature depends On the energy straggling and multiple scattering. The PTRAN code was useful for studying the fundamental mechanism of the absorbed dose to water for clinical proton beams.

Calcium Silicate Hydrate (C-S-H), which takes up most of the hydration products of Portland Cement (PC), has the greatest impact on the mechanical behavior and strength development of concrete. The exact mechanism of its deformation, however, has not yet been elucidated. The present study aims to demonstrate the mechanism of nano-deformation behavior of C-S-H in tricalcium silicate paste under compressive loading, unloading and reloading by interpreting atomic pair distribution function (PDF) based on synchrotron X-ray scattering. The strain of the tricalcium silicate paste for a short-range of 0 ~ 20 Å under compressive load exhibited two stages, I) nano-packing of interlayer of C-S-H and II) micro-packing of C-S-H globules, whereas the deformation for a long-range order of 20 ~ 40 Å was similar to that of a calcium hydroxide phase measured by Bragg peak shift. Moreover, the residual strains due to the plastic deformation of C-S-H was clearly observed.
We made a laser induced grating spectrometer(LIGS) and measured the thermal grating signal generated in a $C_3$$H_{8}$ flame. The thermal grating was formed in the C7Ha flame with two second-harmonic Nd:YAG pulse laser beams, and an LIGS signal was generated by Bragg scattering of a probe laser beam A $r^+.laser(488 nm). We found the modulation period of the signal depends linearly on the spacing of the grating set in the flame. We determined flame temperature by fitting the modulated signal and soot concentration with signal strength. Using this technique, we also obtained temperature profile and soot-particle distribution in a $C_3$$H_{8}$ flame .e .

The mechanical alloying (MA) effect in immiscible V-Cu system with positive heat of mixing was studied by not only the neutron and X-ray diffraction but also the analysis of DSC spectra. The total energy, ΔHt accumulated during MA for the mixture of $V_{50}$$Cu_{50}$ / powders increased with milling time and approached the saturation value of 14 kJ/mol after 120 h of milling. It can be seen that the free energy difference between the amorphous phase and the pure V and Cu powders with an atomic ratio 5:5 is estimated to be 11 kJ/mol by Miedema et al. This is thermodynamically taken as one of the evidences for the amorphization. The structural changes of V-Cu MA powders were characterized by the X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction. We take a full advantage of a negligibly small scattering length of the V atom in the neutron diffraction measurement. The neutron diffraction data definitely indicate that the amorphization proceeds gradually but incompletely even after 120 h of MA and bcc-Cu Bragg peaks appears after 60 h of MA.

Carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) is on the rise as a treatment choice for malignant tumor. Compared to conventional radiotherapy, particle beams have different physical and biological properties. Particle beam provides a low entry dose, deposits most of the energy at the endpoint of the flight path, and forms an asymptotic dose peak (the "Bragg peak"). Compared to protons, carbon with its larger mass decreases beam scattering, resulting in a sharper dose distribution border. We report a 50-year-old male who underwent CIRT without surgical resection on osteosarcoma of the mandible. After CIRT, the patient's pain was gone, and the malignant mass remained stable with accompanying necrosis. Nine months later, however, magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated progression of the left mandibular osteosarcoma with pulmonary metastases. After multidisciplinary discussion, concurrent chemoradiotherapy was conducted. While necrotic bone segments came out of the mandible during subsequent periodic outpatient visits, the tumor itself was stable. Thirty months after his first visit and diagnosis, the patient is waiting for chemotherapy. Although CIRT is superior in treating radioresistant hypoxic disease, CIRT is in its infancy, so care must be taken for its indications and complications.

Purpose: The advantages of ocular proton therapy are that it spares the optic nerve and delivers the minimal dose to normal surrounding tissues. In this study, it developed a solid eye phantom that enabled us to perform quality assurance (QA) to verify the dose and beam range for passive single scattering proton therapy using a single phantom. For this purpose, a new solid eye phantom with a polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) wedge was developed using film dosimetry and an ionization chamber. Methods: The typical beam shape used for eye treatment is approximately 3 cm in diameter and the beam range is below 5 cm. Since proton therapy has a problem with beam range uncertainty due to differences in the stopping power of normal tissue, bone, air, etc, the beam range should be confirmed before treatment. A film can be placed on the slope of the phantom to evaluate the Spread-out Bragg Peak based on the water equivalent thickness value of PMMA on the film. In addition, an ionization chamber (Pin-point, PTW 31014) can be inserted into a hole in the phantom to measure the absolute dose. Results: The eye phantom was used for independent patient-specific QA. The differences in the output and beam range between the measurement and the planned treatment were less than 1.5% and 0.1 cm, respectively. Conclusions: An eye phantom was developed and the performance was successfully validated. The phantom can be employed to verify the output and beam range for ocular proton therapy.
Purpose: Proton therapy has different relative biological effectiveness (RBE) compared with X-ray treatment, which is the standard in radiation therapy, and the fixed RBE value of 1.1 is widely used. However, RBE depends on a charged particle's linear energy transfer (LET); therefore, measuring LET is important. We have developed a LET measurement method using the inefficiency characteristic of an EBT3 film on a proton beam's Bragg peak (BP) region. Methods: A Gafchromic EBT3 film was used to measure the proton beam LET. It measured the dose at a 10-cm pristine BP proton beam in water to determine the quenching factor of the EBT3 film as a reference beam condition. Monte Carlo (MC) calculations of dose-averaged LET (LETd) were used to determine the quenching factor and validation. The dose-averaged LETs at the 12-, 16-, and 20-cm pristine BP proton beam in water were calculated with the quenching factor. Results: Using the passive scattering proton beam nozzle of the National Cancer Center in Korea, the LETd was measured for each beam range. The quenching factor was determined to be 26.15 with 0.3% uncertainty under the reference beam condition. The dose-averaged LETs were measured for each test beam condition. Conclusions: We developed a method for measuring the proton beam LET using an EBT3 film. This study showed that the magnitude of the quenching effect can be estimated using only one beam range, and the quenching factor determined under the reference condition can be applied to any therapeutic proton beam range.
