  • A new species of Nitokra and Ameira parvula (Claus) belonging to the family Ameiridae are recorded from brackish waters in South Korea. Nitokra koreanus n. sp. most resembles N. spinipes and N. pietschmanni, however, it is characteristic in having the character combination of ellipsoidal P5 exopod and very short P1 enp 1. Ameira parvula is reported for the first time from the Northwestern Pacific. Description of the new species and the taxonomic accounts of both species are presented.

  • Eight calanoid species of 4 genera in 4 families are reported from the various brackish waters such as estuaries, brackish-water lakes, and coastal marshes in South Korea. Among them, Eurytemora affinis (Poppe) and Acartia (Acanthacartia) tsuensis Ito are newly added to Korean copepod fauna. Collection data, brief descriptions, illustrations and distribution maps for the eight species are prepared. A key to the genera and species of the brackish-water calanoids from Korea is also presented.

  • To clarify the types of brackish region of the Han River Estuary, this research was carried out, and the results obtained on the basis of salinities and phytoplankton are as follows: 1. Geomorphologically, the Han River Estuary is the drowned river valley type. 2. According to the Venice System, the estuarine extent is defined from the lower point of Jollyu-ri to Palmi Island. As a whole the estuarine region is mixo-haline including parts from oligo-haline to poly-haline. 3. In standpont of phytoplankton frequency, the frequency of fresh-water species is high in the upper region of estuary and that of marine species is high in the lower region. The rate of frequency of fresh-water species is inversely proportionate to that of marine species. The area mixedby marine and fresh-water species over estuarine boundary. 4. The frequency of some typical brackish species is very low and almost similar in the whole region.

  • Four times of field survey were carried out to collect fish samples at six stations in Shinpo district, North Korea in October 1997, July 1998, May and October 2002. Sampling stations were located in upstream, middle and down of the southern river of Bukchong and three brackish lakes of lake Hommanpo, Daein and Hyunkum, respectively. A total of 29 species belonging to 11 families occurred. Family Cyprinidae showed the prosperity in species number of 28% among total species occurred. No natural monument fishes or rare species were captured. Ten commercial fishes, five anadromous ones and five brackish ones were identified. Feeding habits divided fish fauna with 11 carnivores, two herbivores and seven omnivorous ones. In the river, 20 species belonging to seven families inhabited, 18 species of 6 families in lake Homanpo, 21 of seven III Hyunkum and 23 of eight in Daein, respectively. Ecological indices of richness, diversity and evenness were highest in lake Daein and dominance index was highest in lake Hyunkum.

  • To find unrecorded diatom species, random materials were collected from the freshwater, brackish water, and coastal waters. Benthic and periphytic diatoms were sampled from twelve localities. Thirteen species belonging to eight genera are newly added to the national flora of diatom. In the intertidal areas, the five species are new to Korea, Anaulus minutus Grunow, Anaulus simonsenii Witkowski & Metzeltin, Eunotogramma laeve Grunow, Eunotogramma productum Grunow, and Nitzschia subcapitellata Hustedt. The following two species are new from brackish waters, Chamaepinnularia krookiformis (Krammer) Lange-Bertalot & Krammer and Cymatoneis ovalis Heiden. The following four species are new from mountain peatlands, Geissleria ignota (Krasske) Lange-Bertlaot & Metzeltin, Chamaepinnularia hassiaca (Krasske) Cantonati & Lange-Bertalot, Chamaepinnularia mediocris (Krasske) Lange-Bertalot and Pinnularia linearidivergens Kulikovskiy, Lange-Bertalot & Metzeltin. The following two species are new from river or streams, Cymbella hustedtii var. compacta Krammer and Cymbella stigmaphora ${\emptyset}strup$.

  • Two brackish cyclopoid species are reported mostly from the estuaries and salt marshes in the southern coast of Korea: Limnoithona sinensis (Burckhardt, 1913) and Apocyclops borneoensis Lindberg, 1954. The two species as well as the genera are newly added to Korean fauna. Herein, the redescription is provided with the systematic accounts and detailed illustrations of them.

  • As one of the serial faunistic studies on the brackish cyclopoids from Korea, taxonomic accounts of three species of Halicyclops from various brackish waters in South Korea are provided, with detailed illustrations of them: H. uncus Ueda and Nagai, 2009, H. setiformis Ueda and Nagai, 2012, and H. itohi Ueda and Nagai, 2012. Halicyclops uncus is newly recorded from Korea, and the latter two species are corrected from H. sinensis sensu Chang, 2009 and H. cf. rotundipes sensu Chang, 2009, respectively. As a result, a total of seven species of the genus are now recognized in Korea, and a revised key to the species is presented.

  • Samples were collected from planktonic habitats of the fresh and brackish waters in Korea from August 2016 to May 2018. As a result, three genera and nine species were newly recorded in Korea. The unrecorded indigenous genera were Anathece, Chondrocystis and Geminocystis, and nine species were Anabaenopsis arnoldii, Anathece smithii, Chondrocystis dermochroa, Coelosphaerium aerugineum, Eucapsis microscopica, Geminocystis herdmanii, Microcystis panniformis, Synechococcus nidulans and Woronichinia karelica. Anathece smithii, Coelosphaerium aerugineum, Eucapsis microscopica, Microcystis panniformis and Synechococcus nidulans had been reported to inhabit freshwater, but these were found in brackish water in this study. Microcystis panniformis, which is a potential genus for causing green-tide, is taxonomically valuable in Korea.

  • Samples were collected from benthic and subaerophytic habitats of fresh and brackish water in Korea from April 2017 to April 2018. Accordingly, three genera and seven species were newly recorded in Korea. Three unrecorded genera were Cephalothrix, Cyanophanon and Toxifilum, and seven species were Anagnostidinema pseudacutissimum, Calothrix elenkinii, Cephalothrix komarekiana, Cyanophanon mirabile, Cyanosarcina chroococcoides, Leptolyngbya ectocarpi and Toxifilum mysidocida. Anagnostidinema pseudacutissimum and Cephalothrix komarekiana had been previously reported to inhabit freshwater, but these were found to be present in brackish water during the period of the present study. Also, Cyanosarcina chroococcoides previously reported to inhabit moorland waters and swamps, were found to be present in subaerophytic habitat.
