This study was conducted to find out the biochemical or metabolic resistance mechanism of brown planthopper (BPH) to carbofuran. Differences between resistant ($LD_{50};\;20.3{\mu}g/g$) and susceptible strains($LD_{50};\;0.3{\mu}g/g$) were shown. The amounts of carbofuran metabolite, benzofuranol, and the origin, not developed by Thin Layer Chromatography, were much more in the susceptible strain. But the mother compound, carbofuran, was much more in the resistant strain. The tendencies of metabolism one and three hours after treatment were similar in both strains except for the amounts of metabolites described above. From the study, it is supposed that hydrolytic enzyme, esterase, changes its role from cleaving the esteric bond of carbofuran to making conjugates with carbofuran. This seems to be the main resistance mechanism of BPH to carbofuran. Oxidase and transferase may play little or no role in resistance mechanism. Oxidative and transferring enzymes gave no effects on the metabolism of carbofuran in the resistant strain compared with the susceptible strain.
Background: Awareness about prostate cancer has increased in the community, and prostate cancer screening examinations, including prostate specific antigen (PSA) assays, are now widely available. Prior to the PSA era, up to 27% of prostate cancers were detected incidentally at the time of transurethral resection of prostate (TURP). After PSA testing became widely available, the incidence of incidentally detected carcinoma prostate in TURP specimens without prior diagnosis reduced to 5-13%. However, the incidence of incidentally detected carcinoma prostate has been reported to vary across the globe since various factors can influence the identification of this malignancy in TURP specimens. In this paper, we focus on rates of incidentally detected prostate cancer in TURP specimens in our hospital and correlate it with various parameters. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study of histopathological findings of biopsy specimens was conducted for patients undergoing TURP during a period of 5 years from April 2010. The inclusion criteria were patients diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (digital rectal examination (DRE) not showing any abnormally hard areas and normal age adjusted PSA values). Patients with elevated PSA, abnormal DRE, documented urinary tract infection and proved adenocarcinoma prostate (CaP) were excluded from the study. The total weight of prostatectomy specimen, occurrence of carcinoma prostate in the chips, percentage of total tissue resected showing malignancy and Gleason's scores were recorded. Results: A total of 597 patients belonging to the inclusion criteria were studied. The incidence of occult CaP in the study group was 5.2 % (31/597). Out of these, 8 belonged to T1a and 23 belonged to T1b stages. The age group 70 - 79 years had the maximum incidence of occult CaP. It was observed that the clinical grading of prostate did not have a bearing on the incidence of occult CaP whereas the weight of resected specimen correlated with the incidence of CaP. The incidence of occult CaP was greater with low volume prostates (<20 g). (P=0.15). Conclusions: The rate of incidentally detected adenocarcinoma prostate in patients undergoing TURP for clinically diagnosed BPH was found to be only 5.2 % in our study which is low when compared with similar studies done elsewhere. The age of the patient and weight of the resected specimen correlated with incidence of occult prostate cancer. The clinical grading of prostate by DRE however, demonstrated no correlation.
Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) affect self-assessed quality of life. The prevalence of LUTS is commonly high in the elderly. The purpose of urodynamic investigation is to obtain information on the function of the urinary system. One of the most frequently used measurement procedures in urodynamics is filling and voiding cystometry. But in this system transurethral catheter is used and it makes patients uncomfortable. The aim of this study is to implement the system that could evaluate noninvasively the function of urinary tract. A new system has been developed to analyze urine flow rate and vesical pressure during voiding. These signals were recorded simultaneously and transmitted to a PC. For system evaluation, a model for the lower urinary system of men was constructed. From the evaluation of the model, vesical pressure was correlated with the occlusion degree. In a pilot study with five male subjects, maximum of standard deviation was 1.26, error rate was 3.49 and coefficient of variation was 3.48.
Agamermis unka, a mermithid parasite of brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, is the most important natural enemy of BPH and white-backed planthopper (WBPH), Sogatella furcifera in Korea. Distribution of A. unka was investigated in Korean rice fields from 1992 to 1998 and in 2001. Overwintering population of A. unka in Gosung, Namhae, and Tongyoung from 1992 to 1998 was different depending on locality and year. In the survey of A. tanka distribution in the spring of 2001, A. unka was found only at Jangheung and Haenam in Jeonnam province and Namhae, Jinju, Sancheong, Sacheon, Gosung, Tongyoung, Uiryeong, Changwon, Gimhae, and the experimental field of Gyeongsangnamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services at Jinju in Gyeongnam province out of 30 observed regions in 5 provinces. The number of A. unka was 1,045/㎥ at Namhae, 947/㎥ at the experimental field of Gyeongsangnamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services, and 395/㎥ at Gosung. Density of A. unka at the rice paddies of Gyeongnam province after harvest in 2001 was higher at the rice fields of Namhae, Gosung, and the experimental field of Gyeongsangnamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services. Although density of A. unka was higher in the pesticide-untreated plots than fungicide-treated or insecticide-treated plots of forecasting paddies, there were no significant differences. After rice harvest A. unka was found from the forecasting paddies of Gosung, Jinju, Namhae and Sacheon out of 19 observed localities in Gyeongnam province.

Using two japonica rice cultivars (Ilpumbyeo and Sanghaehyanghyella), which are distinguishable by the brown planthopper (BHP) resistance maker (R208), a relationship between the BPH resistance gene (Os-Bil) and salt-tolerance was investigated. To do this, changes in the expression level of Os-Bil by the salt stress were quantified by the real-time PCR in the two cultivars, and compared with those in other two indica rice cultivars (Pokkali and IR29). In Ilpumbyeo, the expression level of Os-Bil decreased by the treatments of 50 and 200 mM NaCl in a concentration-dependent manner, and in Sanghaehyanghyella it rather increased slightly at 50 mM but decreased drastically at 200 mM. Comparably, IR29, a salt-sensitive cultivar, showed a reduction of the Os-Bil gene expression after the treatment of 100 mM NaCl, but Pokkali, a salt-tolerance cultivar, rather increased about two times in the level of Os-Bil transcripts. These results suggest that the BPH resistance gene may involve in the difference in the salt-tolerance at least between the two indica rice cultivars.
This study was conducted to know the effects of temperature conditions on the growth and oviposition of the brown planthopper(BPH), Nilaparvata lugens $St{\aa}l$. Results obtained were to predict the timing of the BPH control by measuring population dynamics of the BPH in response to temperature fluctuations upon migration of the insects in paddy fields. Developmental and ovipositional rates under constant and alternating temperature conditions were observed in a plant growth cabinet. Hatchabilities of eggs of the BPH were the highest at $25^{\circ}C$ and were decreased below or above the optimum temperature. Egg periods were the shortest at $27.5^{\circ}C$ and prolonged with decreasing temperature, but retarded at higher temperature above $30^{\circ}C$. Adult emergence rates were the highest at $27.5^{\circ}C$ and reduced with decreasing temperature, and no adult emerged at $32.5^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$. Developmental period of nymph was the shortest at both $27.5^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$, but extended with decreasing temperature. Female longevity was increased with decreasing temperature and the male longevity was the shortest at $27.5^{\circ}C$. Preoviposition period was the shortest at $32.5^{\circ}C$, but prolonged with decreasing temperature. It was about 6.5 times longer at $17.5^{\circ}C$ than that at $32.5^{\circ}C$. Number of eggs oviposited per female was the greatest at $25^{\circ}C$, but decreased at the temperature below or above the optimum. Under the same total effective day-degrees, hatchabilty at the alternating temperature was about 10% higher than that at the constant temperature but egg period at the alternating temperature was nearly identical as that at the constant. Under the $22^{\circ}C$ condition, emergence rate was about 8% higher at the alternating temperature than that at the constant, however, at the $28^{\circ}C$, the rate was about 8% higher at the constant than that at the alternating. Nymphal period was about $4{\sim}6$ days longer at the alternating temperature than that at the constant. Under the same total effective day-degrees in adult stage, both longevity and oviposition period were longer at alternating temperature than those at the constant. Number of eggs oviposited per female was also higher at the alternating. Longevities of females reared under $28^{\circ}C$ of constant temperature was the longest no matter what temperatures they were exposed after the emergence. This result seems to be indicating that female longevity is greatly influenced by the temperature to which they were exposed durings immature stages. Preoviposition period was affected by the temperature exposed during the nympal and adult stage whereas the number of eggs oviposited was affected by the temperature during the adult stage only. Based on the results from this study, the developmental threshold temperatures seem to be $14.12^{\circ}C$ for eggs, $14.76^{\circ}C$ for nymphs, $9.62^{\circ}C$ for adults, and $15.95^{\circ}C$ for preoviposition period. Estimated values of the total effective temperature for completing each stage were 141.25 day-degrees for eggs, 167.83 day-degrees for nymphs, 349.64 day-degrees for adults, and 58.60 day-degrees for preoviposition.
Insecticidal activities of imidacloprid to sucking type insect pests, brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens) and peen peach aphid (GPA Myzus persicae), to chewing type insect pests, tobacco cut worm (TCW; Spodoptera litura) and beet armyworm (BAW, Spodoptera exigua) and to spiders, Pirata subpiraticus, Pachygnata clercki and Ummeliata insecticeps, as natural enemies were investigated by several bioassay methods. $LD_{50}$ of the chemical by topical treatment to BPH was 0.015 ${\mu}g/g$(48 hrs), while $LC_{50}s$ by leaf dipping and root zone treatment were 18.1 and 21.5 ppm, respectively. There was no difference in insecticidal activities between leaf dipping and root zone treatment. Imidacloprid also showed ovicidal effect of root zone treatment and its $LC_{50}$ was 6.8ppm $LD_{50}$ (48 hrs after treatment) of imidacloprid to GPA was $0.4{\mu}g/g$ in case of topical application and $LC_{50}s$ by leaf dipping and root zone treatment were 1.9 ppm and 13.7 ppm respectively. Leaf dipping was more effective than root zone treatment in GPA At topical application $LD_{50}$ (48 hrs after treatment) of imidacloprid to chewing type insect pests, TCW and BAW, were greater than 1,492 and $312{\mu}g/g$ and $LC_{50}s$ by leaf dipping method were 4,803 and Heater than 5,000ppm respectively. This means that imidacloprid has much less effect on chewing type insect pests, TCW and BAW. $LD_{50}$(48 hrs after treatment) of imidacloprid to wandering spiders, Pirata subpiraticus, Pachygnata clercki at topical application were greater dan $2941{\mu}g/g$ and greater than $2,976{\mu}g/g$ respectively and that to webbing spider, Ummeliata insecticeps, was 357 ${\mu}g/g$. Imidacloprid showed very low toxicity to the spiders and its selective toxicity ratios between spiders and BPH were greater than 19,600, greater than 19,800 and 23,800, respectively.

In this paper, we implemented holographic optical memory systm which can store and reconstruct many images using new input and angular multiplexing method. In the new input method, phase infomation of input image is inputed in the recording material instead of brightness information. To do so, we represented the images, which captured with CCD camera or displayed on the computer monitor, on the liquid crystal television(LCTV) which removed polarizer/analyzer. Therefore, we can generate uniform input beam intensity regardless of the total brightness of input image, and apply the scheduled recording method. Also we can increase the intensity of input beam so reduce the recording time of input image. And reconstructedimage is acquired by transforming phase information into brightness information of image with analyzer. The incident angle of reference beam is acquired by Fourier transform of the binary phase hologram(BPH) which designed with SA algorithm on the LCTV. The proposed optical memory system is stable because the incident angle of the reference beam is controlled easy and electronically. We demonstreated optical experiment which store and reconstruct various type images in BaTiO$_{3}$ using proposed holographic memory system.
