In the present work, a linear static analysis is presented for thin-walled prismatic box-beams made of generally anisotropic materials. A mixed beam theory has been used to model and carry out the analysis. Several different constitutive assumptions for the shell-wall of the beam section are assessed into the beam formulation. Simple layup cases of box-beams representing bending-torsion or extension-torsion coupled configuration have been considered and tested to clearly show the effects of elastic couplings of the beam. A detailed finite element structural analysis using the MSC/NASTRAN has been carried out to validate the current analytical results. Numerical results show that appropriate assumptions for the constitutive relations are important and crucial for the accurate prediction of beam stiffness constants and also thor the beam behavior.
Up to now, Japan has more than 200 corrugated steel web composite beam bridges which are under construction and have been constructed, and China has more than 30 corrugated steel web composite beam bridges. The bridge type includes the simply supported beam, continuous beam, continuous rigid frame and cable stayed bridge etc. The section form has developed to the single box and multi-cell box girder from the original single box and single chamber. From the stress performance and cost saving, the span range of 50~150 m is the most competitive. At present, the design mostly adopts the computational analytical method combining the spatial bar system model, plane beam grillage model and solid model. However, the spatial bar system model is short of the refinement analysis on the space effect, such as the shear lag effect, effective distribution width problem, and eccentric load factor problem etc. Due to the similarity of the plane beam grillage method in the equivalence principle, it cannot accurately reflect the shearing stress distribution and local stress of the top and bottom plates of the box type composite beam. The solid model is very difficult to combine with the overall calculation. Moreover, the spatial grid model can achieve the refinement analysis, with the integrity of the analysis and the comprehensiveness of the stress checking calculation, and can make up the deficiency of the analytical method currently. Through the example verification of the solid model and spatial grid model, it can be seen that the calculation results for the stress and the displacement of two models are almost consistent, indicating the applicability and precision of the spatial grid model.

The theory of non-prismatic folded plate structures was reported by the senior author in 1965 and 1966. Fiber reinforced composite materials are strong in tension. The structural element for such tension force is very thin and weak against bending because of small bending stiffnesses. Naturally, the box type section is considered as the optimum structural configuration because of its high bending stiffnesses. Such structures can be effectively analyzed by the folded plate theory with relative ease. The "hollow" bending member with uniform cross-section can be treated as prismatic folded plates which is a special case of the non-prismatic folded plates. Tn this paper, the result of analysis of a folded plates with one box type uniform cross-section is presented. Each plate is made of composite laminates with fiber orientation of [ABBCAAB]$_r$, with A=-B=$45^{\circ}$, and C=$90^{\circ}$. The influence of the span to depth ratio is also studied. When this ratio is 5, the difference between the results of folded plate theory and beam theory is 1.66%. is 1.66%.
This paper presents the flutter analysis and optimum design of axially functionally graded box beam cantilever wing section by considering various geometric and material parameters. The coupled dynamic equations of the continuous model of wing system in terms of material and cross-sectional properties are formulated based on extended Hamilton's principle. By expressing the lift and pitching moment in terms of plunge and pitch displacements, the resultant two continuous equations are simplified using Galerkin's reduced order model. The flutter velocity is predicted from the solution of resultant damped eigenvalue problem. Parametric studies are conducted to know the effects of geometric factors such as taper ratio, thickness, sweep angle as well as material volume fractions and functional grading index on the flutter velocity. A generalized surrogate model is constructed by training the radial basis function network with the parametric data. The optimized material and geometric parameters of the section are predicted by solving the constrained optimal problem using firefly metaheuristics algorithm that employs the developed surrogate model for the function evaluations. The trapezoidal hollow box beam section design with axial functional grading concept is illustrated with combination of aluminium alloy and aluminium with silicon carbide particulates. A good improvement in flutter velocity is noticed by the optimization.

A method is presented for the analysis of curved segmentally erected prestressed concrete box girder bridges including time-dependent effects due to load history, temperature history, creep, shrinkage, aging of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel. The segments can be either precast or cast-in-place. Thin-walled beam theory and finite element method are combined to develop a curved nonprismatic thin-walled box beam element. The element consists of three nodes and each node has eight displacement degrees of freedom, including transverse distortion and longitudinal warping of the cross section.

The theory of non-prismatic folded plate structures was reported by D.H. Kim in 1965 and 1966. Fiber reinforced composite materials are strong in tension. Naturally, the box type section is considered as the optimum structural configuration because of its high bending stiffnesses. In this paper, the result of analysis of a folded plates with one box type uniform cross-section is presented. Each plate is made of composite laminates with fiber orientation of [ABBCAAB]r, with A=-B=45${\circ}C$, and C=90${\circ}$. The influence of the span to depth ratio is also studied. This paper reports recent developments concerning the application of Generalised Beam Theory (GBT) to the structural analysis of steel-concrete composite bridges. The potential of GBT-based semi-analytical or finite element-based analyses in this field is illustrated/demonstrated by showing that both accurate and computationally efficient solutions may be achieved for a wide range of structural problems, namely those associated with the bridge (i) linear (first-order) static, (ii) vibration and (iii) lateral-torsional-distortional buckling behaviours. Several illustrative examples are presented, which concern bridges with two distinct cross-sections: (i) twin box girder and (ii) twin I-girder. Allowance is also made for the presence of discrete box diaphragms and both shear lag and shear connection flexibility effects.

To use concrete box culverts effectively, precast goods are manufactured at a factory, then linked and anchored with prestressing tendon at a field. However, the corrosion of rebar and prestressing tendon in the box culverts utilizing portland cement concrete is issued when the cracks occur at a underground water level. It has been reported that reported that expansive concrete, compared with portland cement concrete, has many structural advantages such as increasing capacity of watertight, controling initial crack and improving durability due to its property of expansion. During flexure test with RC beam made from expansive concrete, in the case of a constant section of concrete element, the lower steel ratio is, and in the case of a constant steel ratio, the more incremental the section of concrete element, the more incremental the amount of chemical prestress by expansive concrete is. At the segment of the box culverts using expansive concrete, the numbers of crack and its gap is reduced, and ultimate load and initial crack load is much larger than the segment at which expansive concrete is nor used. Also lay-out of tendon with a curvature generate upward force so that deflection is reduced. Through the whole procedure, it could be confirmed that performance precast box culvert by means of using expansive concrete is improved.
An overhead travelling crane structure of two doubly symmetric welded box beams is designed for minimum cost. The rails are placed over the inner webs of box beams. The following design constraints are considered: local buckling of web and flange plates, fatigue of the butt K weld under rail and fatigue of fillet welds joining the transverse diaphragms to the box beams, fatigue of CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) laminate, deflection constraint. For the formulation of constraints the relatively new standard for cranes EN 13001-3-1 (2010) is used. To fulfill the deflection constraint CFRP strengthening should be used. The application of CFRP materials in strengthening of steel and concrete structures are widely used in civil engineering applications due to their unique advantages. In our study, we wanted to show how the mechanical properties of traditional materials can be improved by the application of composite materials and how advanced materials and new production technologies can be applied. In the optimization the following cost parts are considered: material, assembly and welding of the steel structure, material and fabrication cost of CFRP strengthening. The optimization is performed by systematic search using a MathCAD program.
This paper presents an analysis of the results of an experimental program on the performance of a novel configuration of a hybrid FRP-concrete beam. The beam section consists of a GFRP pultruded profile, a CFRP laminate, and a concrete block all wrapped up using filament winding. It was found that the thickness of the concrete block and the confinement by the filament-wound wrapping had a profound effect on the energy dissipation behaviour of the beam. Using a shear punching model, and comparing the predicted results with the experimental ones, it was found that beyond a given value of the concrete block thickness, the deformational behaviour of the beam shifts from brittle to ductile. It was also found that the filament-wound wrap had many benefits such as providing a composite action between the concrete block and the GFRP box, improving the stiffness of the beam, and most importantly, enhancing the load carrying ability through induced confinement of the concrete.
