Finite element analysis on the hydroforming of bumper stay (하이드로포밍을 이용한 범퍼스테이 FEM 성형해석)

  • A bumper comprises a bumper face, a bumper beam for distributing the load from the impacts applied to the bumper face and reinforcing the bumper, an absorber member interposed between the bumper face and the bumper beam, and a pair of bumper stays which secure the bumper beam to the vehicle body. A conventional bumper stay structure is assembled into several stamped parts, so several processes are needed and the structure is complicated. In this study the bumper stay is applied to the tubular hydroforming which is known to have several advantages such as the reduction of the number of the process and the part weight. The thickness distribution of the tube is mainly considered to evaluate the hydro-formability and the shape of the tube is determined.

Use of Super Elements and Substructures for Three Dimensional Analysis of the Box System with Openings (개구부가 있는 벽식구조물의 3차원해석을 위한 슈퍼요소와 부분구조의 이용)

  • The box system that is composed only of reinforced concrete walls and slabs are adopted on many high-rise apartment buildings recently constructed in Korea. And the framed structure with shear wall core that can effectively resist horizontal forces is frequently adopted for the structural system for high-rise building structures. In these structures, a shear wall may have one or more openings for functional reasons. It is necessary to use subdivided finite elements for accurate analysis of the shear wall with openings. But it would take tremendous amount of computational time and memory if the entire building structure is subdivided into a finer mesh . An efficient analysis method that can be used regardless of the number, size and location of openings is proposed in this study, The analysis method uses super element, substructure, matrix condensation technique and fictitious beam technique. Three-dimensional analyses of the box system and the framed structure with shear wall core having various types of openings were performed to verify the efficiency of the proposed method. It was confirmed that the proposed method have outstanding accuracy with drastically reduced time and computer memory from the analyses of example structures.

  • A four-noded curved shell finite element for the geometrically non-linear analysis of beams curved in plan is introduced. The structure is conceived as a sequence of macro-elements (ME) having the form of transversal segments of identical topology where each slice is formed using a number of the curved shell elements which have 7 degrees of freedom (DOF) per node. A curved box-girder beam example is modelled using various meshes and linear analysis results are compared to the solutions of a well-known computer program SAP2000. Linear and non-linear analyses of the beam under increasing uniformly distributed loads are also carried out. In addition to box-girder beams, the proposed element can also be used in modelling open-section beams with curved or straight axes and circular plates under radial compression. Buckling loads of a circular plate example are obtained for coarse and successively refined meshes and results are compared with each other. The advantage of this element is that curved systems can be realistically modelled and satisfactory results can be obtained even by using coarse meshes.

Prediction and analysis of structural noise of a box girder using hybrid FE-SEA method

  • With the rapid development of rail transit, rail transit noise needs to be paid more and more attention. In order to accurately and effectively analyze the characteristics of low-frequency noise, a prediction model of vibration of box girder was established based on the hybrid FE-SEA method. When the train speed is 140 km/h, 200 km/h and 250 km/h, the vibration and noise of the box girder induced by the vertical wheel-rail interaction in the frequency range of 20-500 Hz are analyzed. Detailed analysis of the energy level, sound pressure contribution, modal analysis and vibration loss power of each slab at the operating speed of 140 km /h. The results show that: (1) When the train runs at a speed of 140km/h, the roof contributes more to the sound pressure at the far sound field point. Analyzing the frequency range from 20 to 500 Hz: The top plate plays a very important role in controlling sound pressure, contributing up to 70% of the sound pressure at peak frequencies. (2) When the train is traveling at various speeds, the maximum amplitude of structural vibration and noise generated by the viaduct occurs at 50 Hz. The vibration acceleration of the box beam at the far field point and near field point is mainly concentrated in the frequency range of 31.5-100 Hz, which is consistent with the dominant frequency band of wheel-rail force. Therefore, the main frequency of reducing the vibration and noise of the box beam is 31.5-100 Hz.   • Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP)s have various advantages for construction material in that they are noncorrosive and very strong. FRPs are economical and effective for management and maintenance when applied to footbridge, beam or deck of the bridge, girder, and marine structure. For safety, optimal design for standard modulation of the cross section is necessary. Conditions of optimum are possibilities of domestic production, modular assembly, and structure materials cast in compressed area.

  • Rigorous FE(Finite Element) analyses of the cable-stayed bridge with steel-box girder, the main construction method of which is FCM (Free Cantilever Method), are presented in this paper. The analysis and the checking of design for a derrick crane under several loading conditions are performed using the software MIDAS/Civil and the beam elements are used to model the main structure. Among all the construction stages, special construction stages are chosen and considered to ensure the safety of segments of box girder The stress analysis for lifting of a segment of box girder is performed using the software SAP2000 and the shell elements of which having 6 DOF(Degrees Of Freedom) per nodes are successfully used to model the segment of box girder for the purpose of capturing the detailed behaviors on the folded-plates in the segment. Finally, concluding remarks are given to improve a design of the derrick crane and the segment based on the results from this study.

Finite element study the seismic behavior of connection to replace the continuity plates in (NFT/CFT) steel columns

  • The use of box columns has been increased due to the rigidity in rigid orthogonal moment resisting frames. On the other hand, the installation and welding of necessary horizontal continuity plates inside the columns are both labor-consuming and costly tasks. Accordingly, in this paper, a new beam-to-box column connection by trapezoidal external stiffeners and horizontal bar mats is presented to provide seismic parameters. The proposed connection consists of eight external stiffeners in the level of beam flanges and five horizontal bar mats in Concrete Filled Tube (CFT) columns. The new connection effectively alleviates the stress concentration and moves the plastic hinge away from the column face by horizontal external stiffeners. In addition, the result shows that proposed connection has provided the required strength and rigidity of connection, so that the increased strength, 8.08% and rigidity, 3.01% are compared to connection with internal continuity plates, also the results indicate that this connection can offer appropriate ductility and energy dissipation capacity for its potential application in moment resisting frames in seismic region. As a result, the proposed connection can be a good alternative for connection with continuity plates.
