An approach to control the position for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) based on an adaptive integral binary observer is described. The binary controller with a binary observer is composed of a main loop regulator and an auxiliary loop regulator. One of its key features is that it alleviates chatter in the constant boundary layer. However, steady state estimation accuracy and robustness are dependent upon the thickness of the constant boundary layer. In order to improve the steady state performance of the binary observer and eliminate the chattering problem of the constant boundary layer, a new binary observer is formed by adding extra integral dynamics to the existing switching hyperplane equation. Also, the proposed adaptive integral binary observer applies an adaptive scheme because the parameters of the dynamic equations such as the machine inertia and the viscosity friction coefficient are not well known. Furthermore, these values can typically be easily changed during normal operation. However, the proposed observer can overcome the problems caused by using the dynamic equations, and the rotor position estimation is constructed by integrating the rotor speed estimated with a Lyapunov function. Experimental results obtained using the proposed algorithm are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.
A modified k-$\epsilon$ model is proposed for calculation of transitional boundary layer flows. In order to develop the eddy viscosity model for the problem, the flow is divided into three regions; namely, pre-transition region, transition region and fully turbulent region. The pre-transition eddy-viscosity is formulated by extending the mixing Length concept. In the transition region, the eddy-viscosity model employs two length scales, i.e., pre-transition length scale and turbulent length scale pertaining to the regions upstream and the downstream, respectively, and a university model of stream-wise intermittency variation is used as a function bridging the pre-transition region and the fully turbulent region. The proposed model is applied to calculate three benchmark cases of the transitional boundary layer flows with different free-stream turbulent intensity ( $1\%{\~}6\%$ ) under zero-pressure gradient. It was found that the profiles of mom velocity and turbulent intensity, local maximum of velocity fluctuations, their locations as well as the stream-wise variation of integral properties such as skin friction, shape factor and maximum velocity fluctuations are very satisfactorily Predicted throughout the flow regions.

In this paper, a reconfigurable flight control system is designed by applying the sliding mode control scheme. The sliding mode control method is a nonlinear control method which has been widely used because of its merits such as robustness and flexibility. In the sliding mode controller design, the signum function is usually included, but it causes the undesirable chattering problem. The chattering phenomenon can be avoided by using the saturation function instead of signum function. However, the boundary layer of the sliding surface should be carefully treated because of the use of the saturation function. In contrast to the conventional approaches, the thickness of the boundary layer of our approach does not need to be small. The reachability to the boundary layer is guaranteed by the sliding mode controller. The fault detection and isolation process is operated based on a sliding mode observer. To evaluate the reconfiguration performance, a numerical simulation using six degree-of-freedom aircraft dynamics is performed.
In this study, the transverse vibrations of an axially moving flexible beams resting on multiple supports are investigated. The time-dependent velocity is assumed to vary harmonically about a constant mean velocity. Simple-simple, fixed-fixed, simple-simple-simple and fixed-simple-fixed boundary conditions are considered. The equation of motion becomes independent from geometry and material properties and boundary conditions, since equation is expressed in terms of dimensionless quantities. Then the equation is obtained by assuming small flexural rigidity. For this case, the fourth order spatial derivative multiplies a small parameter; the mathematical model converts to a boundary layer type of problem. Perturbation techniques (The Method of Multiple Scales and The Method of Matched Asymptotic Expansions) are applied to the equation of motion to obtain approximate analytical solutions. Outer expansion solution is obtained by using MMS (The Method of Multiple Scales) and it is observed that this solution does not satisfy the boundary conditions for moment and incline. In order to eliminate this problem, inner solutions are obtained by employing a second expansion near the both ends of the flexible beam. Then the outer and the inner expansion solutions are combined to obtain composite solution which approximately satisfying all the boundary conditions. Effects of axial speed and flexural rigidity on first and second natural frequency of system are investigated. And obtained results are compared with older studies.
In this paper, a receding contact problem for an elastic layer resting on two quarter planes is considered. The layer is pressed by a stamp and distributed loads. It is assumed that the contact surfaces are frictionless and only compressive traction can be transmitted through the contact surfaces. In addition the effect of body forces are neglected. Firstly, the problem is solved analytically based on theory of elasticity. In this solution, the problem is reduced into a system of singular integral equations in which contact areas and contact stresses are unknowns using boundary conditions and integral transform techniques. This system is solved numerically using Gauss-Jacobi integral formulation. Secondly, two dimensional finite element analysis of the problem is carried out using ANSYS. The dimensionless quantities for the contact areas and the contact pressures are calculated under various distributed load conditions using both solutions. It is concluded that the position and the magnitude of the distributed load have an important role on the contact area and contact pressure distribution between layer and quarter plane contact surface. The analytic results are verified by comparison with finite element results.
This study presents numerical solutions of three-dimensional laminar flow-field formed by photo resist flow in a slit-coater model. We discuss on the governing equations, laminar viscosities and the computational model applied in our numerical calculation and some results. We prove that the structure of tapered-cavity aid to make uniform pressure-field and boundary effect is an important problem to improve coating uniformity. In view of uniformity improvement, it is necessary to study for the structure of cavity and flow path.

This paper presents a comparative study of analytical method, finite element method (FEM) and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) for analysis of a contact problem. The problem consists of a functionally graded (FG) layer resting on a half plane and pressed with distributed load from the top. Firstly, analytical solution of the problem is obtained by using theory of elasticity and integral transform techniques. The problem is reduced a system of integral equation in which the contact pressure are unknown functions. The numerical solution of the integral equation was carried out with Gauss-Jacobi integration formulation. Secondly, finite element model of the problem is constituted using ANSYS software and the two-dimensional analysis of the problem is carried out. The results show that contact areas and the contact stresses obtained from FEM provide boundary conditions of the problem as well as analytical results. Thirdly, the contact problem has been extended based on the MLP. The MLP with three-layer was used to calculate the contact distances. Material properties and loading states were created by giving examples of different values were used at the training and test stages of MLP. Program code was rewritten in C++. As a result, average deviation values such as 0.375 and 1.465 was obtained for FEM and MLP respectively. The contact areas and contact stresses obtained from FEM and MLP are very close to results obtained from analytical method. Finally, this study provides evidence that there is a good agreement between three methods and the stiffness parameters has an important effect on the contact stresses and contact areas.

In this study, the continuous and discontinuous contact problems of functionally graded (FG) layer resting on a rigid foundation were considered. The top of the FG layer was loaded by a distributed load. It was assumed that the shear modulus and the density of the layer varied according to exponential functions along the depth whereas the the Poisson ratio remained constant. The problem first was solved analytically and the results were verified with the ones obtained from finite element (FE) solution. In analytical solution, the stress and displacement components for FG layer were obtained by the help of Fourier integral transform. Critical load expression and integral equation for continuous and discontinuous contact, respectively, using corresponding boundary conditions in each case. The finite element solution of the problem was carried out using ANSYS software program. In continuous contact case, initial separation distance and contact stresses along the contact surface between the FG layer and the rigid foundation were examined. Separation distances and contact stresses were obtained in case of discontinuous contact. The effect of material properties and loading were investigated using both analytical and FE solutions. It was shown that obtained results were compatible with each other.

In this paper, a coupling scheme for applying finite element analysis(FEA) programs, such as, LS-DYNA and MIDAS/Civil, to a nonlinear soil structure interaction analysis by the boundary reaction method(BRM) is presented. With the FEA programs, the structure and soil media are discretized by linear or nonlinear finite elements. To absorb the outgoing elastic waves to unbounded soil region as much as possible, the PML elements and viscous-spring elements are used at the outer FE boundary, in the LS-DYNA model and in MIDAS/Civil model, respectively. It is also assumed that all the nonlinear elements in the problem are limited to structural region. In this study, the boundary reaction forces for the use in the BRM are calculated using the KIESSI-3D program by solving soil-foundation interaction problem subjected to incident seismic waves. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated with a linear SSI seismic analysis problem by comparing the BRM solution with the conventional SSI solution. Numerical comparison indicates that the BRM can effectively be applied to a nonlinear soil-structure analysis if motions at the foundation obtained by the BRM for a linear SSI problem excluding the nonlinear structure is conservative.
A multi-layered orthotropic material with a center crack is subjected to an anti-plane shear loading. The problem is formulated as a mixed boundary value problem by using the Fourier integral transform method. This gives a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. The integral equation is solved numerically and anti-plane shear stress intensity factors are analyzed in terms of the material orthotropy for each layer, number of layers, crack length to layer thickness and the order of the loading polynomial. Also, the case of monolithic and hybrid composites are investigated in terms of the local fiber volume fraction and the global fiber volume fraction.
