Sliding mode control (SMC) with variable nonlinear boundary layer is proposed. Two Fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs) are used to decide both boundary layer thickness and nonlinear interpolation using sigmoid function in the boundary layer. The nonlinear interpolation in the boundary layer suing FLC reduces stead state error and chattering. Sigmoid function is used to nonlinear interpolation in the boundary layer sigmoid function parameter with FLC. To demonstrate its performance, the Proposed control algorithm is applied to a simple nonlinear system.

The finite-difference three-dimensional boundary layer procedure of Chang and Patel is modified and applied to solve the boundary layer development on the automobile surface. The inviscid pressure distribution needed to solve the boundary layer equations is obtained by using a low order panel method. The plane of symmetry boundary layer exhibits the strong streamline divergence up to the midbody and convergence thereafter. The streamline divergence in front of the windshield helps the boundary layer to overcome the sever adverse pressure gradient and avoid the separation. The relaxation of the pressure right after the top of the wind-shield, on the other hand, makes the overly thinned boundary layer to readjust and prompts the streamlines to converge into the symmetry plane before the external streamlines do. The three-dimensional characteristics are less apparent after the midbody and the boundary layer is similar to that of the two-dimensional flow. The results of the off-plane-of-symmetry boundary layer are also presented.
The Rondonia Boundary Layer Experiment (RBLE-II) was conceived to collect data the atmospheric boundary layer over two representative surface in the Amazon region of Brazil; tropical forest and a deforested, pasture area. The present study deals with the observations of atmospheric boundary layer growth and decay. Although the atmospheric boundary layer measurements made in RBLE-II were not made simultaneously over the two different surface types, some insights can be gained from analysing and comparing with their structure. The greater depth of the nocturnal boundary layer at the forest site may be due to influence of mechanical turbulence. The pasture site is aerodynamically smoother and so the downward turbulent diffusion will be much pasture than over the forest. The development of the convective boundary layer is stronger over the pasture than over the forest. The influence of the sensible heat flux is important but may be not enough to explain the difference completely. It seems that energy advection may occur from the wet and colder(forest) to the dry and warmer area(pasture), rapidly breaking up the nocturnal inversion. Such advection can explain the abrupt growth of the convective boundary layer at the pasture site during the early morning.

A free stream vortical disturbance generated by a single axial vortex of periodically modulated strength was used to investigate vortical receptivity of a flat plate boundary layer to low-frequency spatially localized free-stream disturbances. It was found that the boundary-layer response was dominated by stream-wise velocity perturbation (streak). However, in contrast to the stationary streaks considered by Boiko (2002), its intensity showed no pronounced growth along the flat plate.

Axisymmetric turbulent thick boundary layers on a rotating body of revolution are calculated numerically in the paper. Richardson number is introduced to the mixing length to take account of swirl effects on Reynolds stresses. Interactions of the boundary layer and the external potential flow are included by adding the displacement thickness of boundary layers on the original body. Pressure distributions on the body surface are estimated by integrating normal momentum equation across the boundary layer. A model is designed and tested in the wind tunnel. Mean velocities are measured. Through the present study, swirl effects on the thick axisymmetric boundary layer development are considerable in comparison with those of non-totating cases. Rotational motion generally increase boundary layer thickness, axial skin friction coefficients, and form drags. Circumferential flow can be reversed to induce negative skin friction when the section area is reduced.
When predicting unsteady flow and pressure fields around a structure in a turbulent boundary layer by Large Eddy Simulation (LES), velocity fluctuations of turbulence (inflow turbulence), which reproduce statistical characteristics of the turbulent boundary layer, must be given at the inflow boundary. However, research has just started on development of a method for generating inflow turbulence that satisfies the prescribed turbulence statistics, and many issues still remain to be resolved. In our previous study, we proposed a method for generating inflow turbulence and confirmed its applicability by LES of an isotropic turbulence. In this study, the generation method was applied to a turbulent boundary layer developed over a flat plate, and the reproducibility of turbulence statistics predicted by LES computation was examined. Statistical characteristics of a turbulent boundary layer developed over a flat plate were investigated by a wind tunnel test for modeling the cross-spectral density matrix for use as targets of inflow turbulence generation for LES computation. Furthermore, we investigated how the degree of correspondence of the cross-spectral density matrix of the generated inflow turbulence with the target cross-spectral density matrix estimated by the wind tunnel test influenced the LES results for the turbulent boundary layer. The results of this study confirmed that the reproduction of cross-spectra of the normal components of the inflow turbulence generation is very important in reproducing power spectra, spatial correlation and turbulence statistics of wind velocity in LES.

Wave resistance of a parabolic thin ship, with its boundary layer and wake taken into account, was calculated up to second order. In addition to the double-model source distribution on the centerplane, image sources of the wave potential were calculated to keep the body introduced boundary condition undisturbed. Boundary layer and wake effects on the wave-making resistance were included by generating an irrotational flow which matches that exterior to the boundary layer and wake. For this purpose, the boundary layer and wake were calculated. The wave resistance refined with second-order corrections are found to be very important for wave resistance calculations even at moderate Froude numbers($Fr=0.2{\sim}0.3$). Wave-potential corrections are dominate around the bow. On the other hand, Viscosity plays and important role at the stern with its boundary layer and wake development.
This paper reports the effects of nozzle exit boundary layer swirl on the instability modes of underexpanded supersonic jets emerging from plane rectangular nozzles. The effects of boundary layer swirl at the nozzle exit on thrust and mixing of supersonic rectangular jets are also considered. The previous study was performed with a 30°boundary layer swirl (S=0.41) in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. At this study, a 45°boundary layer swirl (S=1.0) is applied in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. A three-dimensional unsteady compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes code with Baldwin-Lomax and Chiens $\kappa$-$\xi$ two-equation turbulence models was used for numerical simulation. A shock adaptive grid system was applied to enhance shock resolution. The nozzle aspect ratio used in this study was 5.0, and the fully-expanded jet Mach number was 1.526. The \"flapping\" and \"pumping\" oscillations were observed in the jets small dimension at frequencies of about 3,900Hz and 7,800Hz, respectively. In the jets large dimension, \"spanwise\" oscillations at the same frequency as the small dimensions \"flapping\" oscillations were captured. As reported before with a 30°nozzle exit boundary layer swirl, the induction of 45°swirl to the nozzle exit boundary layer also strongly enhances jet mixing with the reduction of thrust by 10%.

To predict the transonic buffet onset for a supercritical airfoil with shock-boundary layer interactions, a practical steady approach has been proposed. In this study, it is assumed that the airfoil flow is steady even when buffet onset occurs. Steady Navier-Stokes computations are performed on the supercritical airfoil. Using the aerodynamic parameters calculated from Navier-Stokes solver, various steady approaches for predicting buffet onset are discussed. Among the various steady approaches considered in this study, Thomas' criterion based on Navier-Stokes computation has shown to be the most appropriate indicator of identifying the buffet onset for a supercritical airfoil with shock-boundary layer interactions. Good agreements have been obtained compared with the results of unsteady transonic wind tunnel tests. The present method is shown to be reliable and useful for transonic buffet onset for a supercritical airfoil with shock-boundary layer interactions in terms of practical engineering viewpoint.

Sliding mode control with nonlinear interpolation in the boundary layer is proposed. A modified sigmoid function is used for nonlinear interpolation in the boundary layer and its parameter is tuned by a fuzzy controller. The fuzzy controller that takes both the sliding variable and a measure of chattering as its inputs tunes the parameter of the modified sigmoid function. Owing to the decreased thickness of the boundary layer and the tuned parameter, the proposed method has superior tracking performance than the conventional linear interpolation method.
