Pure Titanium and alloy have been widely used in dental implants and orthopedics due to their excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. However, due to the biologically inactive nature of Ti metal implants, it cannot bind to the living bone immediately after transplantation into the body. In order to improve the bone bonding ability of titanium implants, many attempts have been made to alter the structure, composition and chemical properties of titanium surfaces, including the deposition of bioactive coatings. The PEO method has the advantages of short experiment time and low cost. These advantages have attracted attention recently. Recently, many metal ions such as silicon, magnesium, zinc, strontium, and manganese have received attention in this field due to their impact on bone regeneration. Silicon (Si) in particular has been found to be essential for normal bone and cartilage growth and development. Zinc (Zn) plays very important roles in bone formation and immune system regulation and promotes bone metabolism and growth. Manganese (Mn) is an essential trace metal found in all tissues and is required for normal amino acid, lipid, protein and carbohydrate metabolism. The objective of this work was research on the corrosion behavior of Si, Zn and Mn-doped hydroxyapatite on the PEO-treated surface. Anodized alloys was prepared at 270V~300V voltage in the solution containig Zn, Si, and Mn ions. Ion release test was carried out using potentidynamic and AC impedance method in 0.9% NaCl solution. The surface characteristics of PEO treated Ti-6Al-4V alloy were investigated using XRD, FE-SEM, AFM and EDS.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the distribution of periodontally hopeless teeth in patients who had not been treated. Five hundred nineteen teeth of 163 patients who had visited at the Department of Periodontology, Chonbuk National University Hospital during the period from January 1999 to July 2001 were selected as a periodontally hopeless tooth. Selection criteria were as follows: 1) probing pocket depth more than 8mm, 2) tooth mobility of degree III, 3) radiographic bone loss more than 75%. The contralateral tooth to a hopeless tooth (experimental tooth) was designated as a control tooth. Between the experimental and control tooth, differences in probing pocket depth, tooth mobility and amount of radiographic bone loss were examined as well as correlation. The results showed that hopeless teeth were most frequently found in the maxillary first molar position and least frequently in the maxillary canine position. Differences between experimental and control teeth were 2mm in probing depth, 1 degree in tooth mobility, and 20% in amount of bone loss (p<0.01). The periodontal conditions between the experimental and control teeth showed correlation in general, however, statistical significances were found in posterior teeth positions. Within limitations of this study, it can be concluded that local factors may play a role in deterioration of periodontal disease along with symmetrical character of periodontal disease.

This study was conducted to suggest the Cudrania tricuspidata leaf and Achyranthes japonica Nakai Complex (CAC) possibility of use as a functional natural material for improving bone disease. Cudrania tricuspidata leaf and Achyranthes japonica Nakai were mixed in the same amount, extracted with hot water, and then powdered and used in the study. After, the cytotoxicity of CAC for osteoblasts (MG63 cell), osteoclasts (differentiated RAW264.7 cell), and macrophages (RAW264.7 cell) were evaluated by MTT assay, and ALP assay and TRAP assay were performed to confirm the differentiation capacity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, respectively. In addition, the anti-inflammatory effect in macrophages was evaluated by ELISA, qRT-PCR, and western blot assay. CAC did not proliferated osteoblasts and osteoclasts, but increased ALP activity against osteoblasts differentiation and decreased TRAP activity against osteoclasts differentiation. CAC did not proliferated macrophages but decreased nitric oxide production. Also, decreased NOS2, IL1B, IL6, PTGS2, and TNFA gene expression, and JNK and p38 protein phosphorylation in a concentration-dependent manner, but ERK protein phosphorylation was not changed. As a result, CAC increased the differentiation and activation of osteoblasts, inhibited the differentiation and activation of osteoclasts, and regulated the expression of inflammatory cytokines in macrophages. Therefore, it is thought that CAC can be used as a functional natural material that prevents bone disease and has an anti-inflammatory effect.
The author measured the degree of alveolar bone resorption around mandibular central incisors in Korean female(254). Mandibulr central incisors were selected from the females who do not have periodontal disease or malocclusion. The selected radiograms were enlarged in the $5"\times7"$ printing papers for the precise measuring. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The average alveolar bone resorption around mandibular central incisors in Korean women were 1.91mm in 3rd decade, 2, 16mm in 4th decade, 2.51mm in 5th deacade, 2.70mm in 6th decade, 2.94mm in older age group. 2. Alveolar bone resorption and age were in positive correlation; there is a tendency that the alveolar bone resorption increase with aging. 3. The regression equation is as follows. Y=13.57x + 7.06(r=0.60, n=254) (Y=estimated age, x=Length(C-E Junction alveolar crest)lar crest)
Purpose: Osteoporosis is often considered as a women's disease, but men's osteoporosis is also increasingly recognized as an important public health problem. This study was carried out to identify the important modifiable risk factors for osteoporosis in men. Methods: Two hundred and fourteen men were selected among those who checked bone mineral density by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry in lumbar vertebrae from June to September, 2009 at 3 general hospitals in Busan. Self-administrated questionnaires and BMD results of lumbar vertebrae were used for data. Collected data were analyzed by using SPSS 14.0 program. Results: The sports activity level in 30's, body weight, and fracture history of mother were the most powerful influencing factors on the bone mineral density of lumbar vertebrae. Conclusion: These results highlight the need to participate vigorously in sports activity during 30s as a means of increasing peak bone mass in lumbar vertebrae in order to prevent osteoporosis and fracture in men.

Cathepsin K (CK) is a cysteine protease that plays a major and essential role in osteoclast-mediated degradation of collagen matrix of bone. Its tissue-limited distribution and pivotal contribution to bone resorption meet the requirements as the potential therapeutic target of the disease with excessive bone loss such as osteoporosis. In a search for potent CK inhibitors. we found OST-5440 that effectively inhibited bone resorption in vivo as well as in vitro. (omitted)
McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is a disease with clinical features such as fibrous dysplasia in which normal bone tissue is replaced with abnormal fibrous tissue, abnormalities in the endocrine system, and cafe-au-lait spots on the skin. Although MAS patients are generally known to have reduced bone healing ability, postoperative healing after invasive surgical extraction is still not clearly known due to its relatively rare occurrence. In this report, a 25-year-old female patient, who had been diagnosed with MAS and had a history of abnormal bone healing after fractures of her extremities, underwent surgical extraction of the mandibular third molar with surrounding bone removal. Postoperatively, the patient showed favorable soft tissue and bone healing at the surgical site without abnormal findings such as newly developed fibro-osseous lesions, postoperative infection, or osteomyelitis.

Introduction: Auto-tooth bone graft material consists of 55% inorganic hydroxyapatite (HA) and 45% organic substances. Inorganic HA possesses properties of bone in terms of the combining and dissociating of calcium and phosphate. The organic substances include bone morphogenetic protein and proteins which have osteoinduction capacity, as well as the type I collagen identical to that found in alveolar bone. Auto-tooth bone graft material is useful as it supports excellent bone regeneration capacity and minimizes the possibility of foreign body reaction, genetic diseases and disease transmission. Materials and Methods: Implant placement combined with osteoinductive regeneration, preservation of extraction socket, maxillary sinus augmentation, and ridge augmentation using block type, powder type, and block+powder type autobone graft materialwere performed for 250 patients with alveolar bone defect and who visited the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, College of Dentistry, Dankook University from September 2009 to August 2011. Results: Clinical assessment: Among the 250 patients of auto-tooth bone graft, clinical assessment was performed for 133 cases of implant placement. The average initial stabilization of placed implants was 74 implant stability quotient (ISQ). Radiological assessment: The average loss of crestal bone in the mandible as measured 6 months on the average after the application of prosthesis load was 0.29 mm, ranging from 0 mm to 3.0 mm. Histological assessment: In the histological assessment, formation of new bone, densified lamellated bone, trabecular bones, osteoblast, and planting fixtures were investigated. Conclusion: Based on these results, we concluded that auto-tooth bone graft material should be researched further as a good bone graft material with osteoconduction and osteoinduction capacities to replace autogenous bone, which has many limitations.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Osteoporosis and osteoporosis-related disease are drawing a lot of attention in Korea as one of the serious health problems. Bone health status may be influenced by the general dietary quality and dietary pattern. SUBJECTS/METHODS: To determine the relationship between dietary quality and intake patterns and bone health status, the %RNI, NAR, DDS, and food group intake patterns were assessed according to their bone health status for 847 postmenopausal women using the 2010 KNHANES data after eliminating those of likely changing their diet under the advice of doctors or those taking estrogen. RESULTS: Bone health became worse as dietary quality deteriorated. All NAR and %RNI values were highly associated with bone health levels and the consumption frequency of Ca sources, DDS and the food group intake patterns also confirmed the findings. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirmed that dietary quality and dietary patterns were important for bone health. Nutritional education on eating foods from the five basic food groups has to be emphasized to prevent osteoporosis among older women.

Malignant tumor of the pelvic bone has nonspecific symptom and it is not easily detected by physical examination or by radiologic study in early stage, because of its anatomical characteristics. Associated with their variety of disease entity, the treatment of malignant pelvic bone tumor is a problematic point. We have analysed 36 cases of malignant pelvic bone tumors diagnosed at the Severance hospital from 1968 to 1993 to provide a reference for diagnosis and treatment of the malignant pelvic bone tumors. We found that the chondrosarcoma(27.8%) and the osteogenic sarcoma(27.8%) were the most common type of pelvic bone malignancy, and then, in the order of incidence, there were Ewing's sarcoma(16.7%), malignant fibrous histiocytoma(11.1%). There were differences of the age distribution among each diseases and the average age was Ewing's sarcoma 20.5, osteogenic sarcoma 27.2, chondrosarcoma 40.0, malignant fibrous histiocytoma 64.8, respectively. Three of the 5 patients with low grade tumors survived(60%), whereas 3 of the 17 patients with high grade tumors survived(18%). The survival rate of the low grade malignant group was 60%, the high grade was 18%.
