  • In this paper, dynamic buckling of truncated conical shell made of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite is studied. In aerospace industries, this category of structures is utilized extensively due to wide range of engineering applications. To calculate the effective material properties of the nanocomposite, The Mori-Tanaka model is applied. Also, the motion equations are derived with the assistance of the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), Hamilton's principle and energy method. Besides, In order to solve motion equations and analyze dynamic instability region (DIR) of the structure, mixed model of differential quadrature method (DQM) and Bolotin's method is used. Moreover, investigation of the different parameters effects such as geometrical parameters and volume fraction of CNTs on the analysis of the DIR of the structure is done. In accordance with the obtained results, the DIR will occur at higher frequencies by increasing the volume fraction of CNTs.

  • This paper studies the static and dynamic characteristics of composite plates subjected to an arbitrary periodic load in hygrothermal environments. The material properties of composite plates are depended on the temperature and moisture. The governing equations of motion of Mathieu-type are established by using the Galerkin method with reduced eigenfunction transforms. A periodic load is taken to be a combination of axial pulsating load and bending stress in the example problem. The regions of dynamic instability of laminated composite plates are determined by solving the eigenvalue problems based on Bolotin's method. The effects of temperature rise and moisture concentration on the dynamic instability of laminated composite plates are investigated and discussed. The influences of various parameters on the instability region and dynamic instability index are also investigated. The numerical results reveal that the influences of hygrothermal effect on the dynamic instability of laminated plates are significant.

  • This paper studies the dynamic instability of laminated composite plates under thermal and arbitrary in-plane periodic loads using first-order shear deformation plate theory. The governing partial differential equations of motion are established by a perturbation technique. Then, the Galerkin method is applied to reduce the partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations. Based on Bolotin's method, the system equations of Mathieu-type are formulated and used to determine dynamic instability regions of laminated plates in the thermal environment. The effects of temperature, layer number, modulus ratio and load parameters on the dynamic instability of laminated plates are investigated. The results reveal that static and dynamic load, layer number, modulus ratio and uniform temperature rise have a significant influence on the thermal dynamic behavior of laminated plates.

  • The study of rigid roadway pavement under dynamic traffic loads with variable velocity is investigated in this paper. Rigid roadway pavement is modeled as a rectangular damped orthotropic plate supported by elastic Pasternak foundation. The boundary supports of the plate are the steel dowels and tie bars which provide elastic vertical support and rotational restraint. The natural frequencies of the system and the mode shapes are solved using two transcendental equations, obtained from the solution of two auxiliary Levy's type problems, known as the Modified Bolotin Method. The dynamic moving traffic load is expressed as a concentrated load of harmonically varying magnitude, moving straight along the plate with a variable velocity. The dynamic response of the plate is obtained on the basis of orthogonality properties of eigenfunctions. Numerical example results show that the velocity and the angular frequency of the loads affected the maximum dynamic deflection of the rigid roadway pavement. It is also shown that a critical speed of the load exists. If the moving traffic load travels at critical speed, the rectangular plate becomes infinite in amplitude.

  • The purpose of the present work was to study the dynamic instability of a three-layered, symmetric sandwich beam subjected to a periodic axial load resting on nonlinear elastic foundation. A higher-order theory was used for analysis of sandwich beams with soft core on elastic foundations. In the higher-order theory, the Reddy's third-order theory was used for the face sheets and quadratic and cubic functions were assumed for transverse and in-plane displacements of the core, respectively. The elastic foundation was modeled as nonlinear's type. The dynamic instability regions and free vibration were investigated for simply supported conditions by Bolotin's method. The results showed that the responses of the dynamic instability of the system were influenced by the excitation frequency, the coefficients of foundation, the core thickness, the dynamic and static load factor. Comparison of the present results with the published results in the literature for the special case confirmed the accuracy of the proposed theory.

  • A numerical and computer simulation for dynamic stability analysis of graded porous nanoplates has been provided using a Chebyshev-Ritz-Bolotin approach. The nanoplate has been formulated according to the nonlocal elasticity and a 3-unkown plate model capturing neutral surface location. All of material properties are assumed to be dependent of porosity factor which determines the amount or volume of pores. The nano-size plate has also been assumed to be under temperature and moisture variation. It will be shown that stability boundaries of the nanoplate are dependent on static and dynamical load factors, porosity factor, temperature variation and nonlocal parameter.

  • In this study, nonlinear vibrations and dynamic instabilities of a smart embedded micro shell conveying varied fluid flow and subjected to the combined electro-thermo-mechanical loadings are investigated. With the aim of designing new hydraulic sensors and actuators, the piezoelectric materials are employed for the body and the effects of applying electric field on the stability of the system as well as the induced voltage due to the dynamic behavior of the system are studied. The nonlocal piezoelasticity theory and the nonlinear cylindrical shell model in conjunction with the energy approach are utilized to mathematically modeling of the structure. The fluid flow is assumed to be isentropic, incompressible and fully develop, and for more generality of the problem both steady and time dependent flow regimes are considered. The mathematical modeling of fluid flow is also carried out based on a scalar potential function, time mean Navier-Stokes equations and the theory of slip boundary condition. Employing the modified Lagrange equations for open systems, the nonlinear coupled governing equations of motion are achieved and solved via the state space problem; forth order numerical integration and Bolotin's method. In the numerical results, a comprehensive discussion is made on the dynamical instabilities of the system (such as divergence, flutter and parametric resonance). We found that applying positive electric potential field will improve the stability of the system as an actuator or vibration amplitude controller in the micro electro mechanical systems.

  • This paper presents the dynamic instability analysis of un-damped elastically supported piezoelectric functionally graded (FG) beams subjected to in-plane static and dynamic periodic thermomechanical loadings with uncertain system properties. The elastic foundation model is assumed as one parameter Pasternak foundation with Winkler cubic nonlinearity. The piezoelectric FG beam is subjected to non-uniform temperature distribution with temperature dependent material properties. The Young's modulus and Poison's ratio of ceramic, metal and piezoelectric, density of respective ceramic and metal, volume fraction exponent and foundation parameters are taken as uncertain system properties. The basic nonlinear formulation of the beam is based on higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) with von-Karman strain kinematics. The governing deterministic static and dynamic random instability equation and regions is solved by Bolotin's approach with Newmark's time integration method combined with first order perturbation technique (FOPT). Typical numerical results in terms of the mean and standard deviation of dynamic instability analysis are presented to examine the effect of slenderness ratios, volume fraction exponents, foundation parameters, amplitude ratios, temperature increments and position of piezoelectric layers by changing the random system properties. The correctness of the present stochastic model is examined by comparing the results with direct Monte Caro simulation (MCS).

  • In this work, the dynamic stability of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced composite pipes conveying pulsating fluid flow is investigated. The pipe is surrounded by viscoelastic medium containing spring, shear and damper coefficients. Due to the existence of CNTs, the pipe is subjected to a 2D magnetic field. The radial induced force by pulsating fluid is obtained by the Navier-Stokes equation. The equivalent characteristics of the nanocomposite structure are calculated using Mori-Tanaka model. Based on first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) or Mindlin theory, energy method and Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are derived. Using harmonic differential quadrature method (HDQM) in conjunction with the Bolotin's method, the dynamic instability region (DIR) of the system is calculated. The effects of different parameters such as volume fraction of CNTs, magnetic field, boundary conditions, fluid velocity and geometrical parameters of pipe are shown on the DIR of the structure. Results show that with increasing volume fraction of CNTs, the DIR shifts to the higher frequency. In addition, the DIR of the structure will be happened at lower excitation frequencies with increasing the fluid velocity.
