  • The objective of this report is to review the up to present papers including 79 references about functional ingredients in maize and their variations. Maize is a good source of such antioxidants as ${\alpha}-,\;{\gamma}-tocopherols,\;{\alpha}-,\;{\beta}-carotene,\;{\beta}-cryptoxanthin$, zeaxanthin, quercetin and chlorogenic acid. Unsaponifiable standard extracts of Zea mays L. (ZML) have a beneficial effect on various dental diseases. Flavonoids, flavonoid biosynthetic pathway and their controling genes were also reviewed in this report. Flavonoids are required for successful fertilization in maize pollen, and maysin has a potent antibiotic activities to earworm and fall armyworm in maize silks. Maize silks have been used in traditional medicine for diuretic, vascular diseases and diabetes, etc. and boiling water extracts of maize silk have hemodynamic effects, but their ingredients still remain obscure.

  • The effect of post weld heat treatment (P.W.H.T) on the propagation rate of stress corrosion cracking(S.C.C) and threshold stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}.c.c$) for stress corrosion cracking of 304 stainless steel has been investigated in boiling 45% $MgCl_2$ solutions with W.O.L specimens. Specimens were precracked by turning a pair of Cr-Mo steel bolts into a machined slot at the end of the specimen. The fracture surface was examined fractographically by Scanning Electron Microscope(S.E.M.)

Prediction of Maximum Liquid-phase Penetration in Diesel Spray: A review

  • The correlations for the prediction of maximum liquid-phase penetration in diesel spray are reviewed in this study. The existing models developed for the prediction of maximum liquid-phase penetration can be categorized as the zero-dimensional (empirical) model, the multi-dimensional model and the other model. The existing zero-dimensional model can be classified into four groups and the existing multidimensional models can be classified into three groups. The other model includes holistic hydraulic and spray model. The maximum liquid-phase penetration is mainly affected by nozzle diameter, fuel volatility, injection pressure, ambient gas pressure, ambient gas density and fuel temperature. In the case of empirical correlations incorporated with spray angle, the predicted results will be different according to the selection of correlation for spray angle. The research for the effect of boiling point temperatures on maximum liquid-phase penetration is required. In the case of multidimensional model, there exist problems of the grid and spray sub-models dependency effects.

Effects of Water Vapor Concentration on a Droplet Evaporation (액적의 증발에 미치는 수증기 농도의 영향)

  • An experimental study has been conducted to clarify the effect of vapor on droplet evaporation. Droplets of water, ethanol, n-hexadecane and n-heptane were exposed in air stream. Temperature, pressure, and flow velocity in the ambient air are 470K, 1 atm, and 2m/s, respectively. Measurements are carried out for the wide range of water vapor concentration$(0%\sim40%)$. To obtain the time histories of droplet diameter, suspended droplet in hot and humid air stream was synchronized with a back flash light, and enlarged droplet images were taken on a CCD camera. With the vapor concentration increasing, the evaporation rate constant of water droplet decrease slightly and the droplet of ethanol and n-heptane increase actively. The evaporation rate constant of n-hexadecane which has higher boiling point than water increases within around 30% of the concentration.

  • PbSe, with a band gap in the mid-infrared and a samll effective mass, is an interesting material for optical and electrical applications in infrared region. Various colloidal synthetic routes for synthesizing PbSe quantum dot nanoparticles have been developed in the last couple of years. In this work, stable colloidal solutions containing crystalline PbSe particles in the order of 5-15 nm were synthesized using different amount of acetic acid in high boiling coordinating solvents. The size and shape of PbSe nanoparticles was greatly influenced by coexistence of acetic acid in synthetic medium. It was observed by TEM that the shape of PbSe nanoparticles with different amount of acetic acid was changed from spherical to cube or star types.

  • 1. The physical and anatomical properties investigated in this study are the ones, which may give more effect on absorption of preservatives, such as variation of annual ring, specific gravity, shrinkage, E.M.C. of desorption and adsorption at 70 percent relative humidity condition, general and minute properties of wood. 2. On this study, the positive effects of wood structure, in particular, the appearances of tyloses in vessel element upon the absorption of creosote were observed. 3. Thirteen percent sodium chloride solution treatment and boiling hot water treatment have shown poor results to improve the preservative absorption characteristics of tested species however, some slight difference between treated and control could be seen.   • The microwave of 2450 MHz, generated by a household cooking oven, was evaluated for its applicability to melt various rehydrated media and to remove dissolved oxygen from tubed media for anaerobic culture. The effect on the sterilization of E. coli in selective media was also evaluated. The following results were obtained. 10 The microwave oven was useful in saving time for melting media and in eliminating heat and combustion gas from the laboratory, which were inevitable by-products in the conventional flame method. 2) Dissolved oxygen could be removed without boiling over by exposing the tubes of anaerobic culture medium after putting them in a wire basket in a beaker with water. 30 The count of E. coli during the melting of MacConkey and EMB agar were similar to those treated with open flame. The microwave treatment was not considered a possible mean to replace autoclaving even in these selective media.

Prediction of the Reflood Phenomena with modifications in RELAP5/MOD3.1

  • Reflood model in RELAP5/MOD3.1 are modified to improve the unrealistic prediction results of the model. In the new method, the modified Zuber pool boiling critical heat flux (CHF) correlation is adopted. The reflood drop size is characterized by the use of We=1.5 and the minimum drop size of 0.0007 m for $p^{*}\;{\leq}\;0.025$. To describe the wall to vapor heat transfer at low pressure and low flow condition, the Webb-Chen correlation is utilized . The suggested method has been verified through the simulations of the Lehigh University rod bundle reflood tests. Through sensitivity study it is shown that the effect of drag coefficients is dominant in the reflood model. It is proved that the present modifications result in much more improved quench behavior and accurate wan and vapor temperature predictions.

  • The combustion characteristics of binary component single droplets hanging at the tip of a quartz fiber are studied experimentally at different environmental pressures and temperatures under normal gravity. Normal Heptane and Normal Hexadecane are selected as two fuels with high difference in boiling temperatures. A falling electrical furnace in a high pressure vessel has provided high temperature environment. Nitrogen and air have formed the environment to study evaporation and combustion, respectively. The initial diameter of droplet was ranging from 1.1 to 1.3 mm. The evaporation and combustion processes were recorded by a high speed digital camera. Some characteristics of droplet burning under different environment conditions and different droplet composition have been investigated. Microexplosion of droplet take places under atmospheric pressure. Bubble formation and its consequent result, incomplete droplet disintegration which presents in all binary compositions, do not appear at high pressure. The initiation of combustion, always takes place in the bottom of droplet due to buoyancy effect of relatively cold fuel vapor. Also, the burning of binary droplet produces soot when the pressure is high.

  • Dimethyl ether (DME) has a high cetane number that is suitable for diesel fuel. DME does not contain sulfur or nitrogen, and is an oxygenated fuel so it produces no particulate matter when combusted and is environmentally friendly. DME fuel for diesel engines show excellent material properties such as a lower volumetric heating value, lower boiling point, lower lubricity, and stronger solvent effect than light oil. This study experimentally examined a lubricity improver (LI) for dimethyl ether. A diesel LI based on biodiesel and fatty acid methyl ester was tested among DME LI candidates. The long-term storage stability and physical properties of the optimum LI for DME were determined.
