  • Hayeob pigment is known as one of the traditional dark green pigments, but the color, raw material, and manufacturing method have not been clearly identified. However, comparing the analysis results of the particle shape and constituent minerals of Hayeob pigments revealed through pigment analysis studies of colored cultural properties such as Dancheong, Gwaebul, and paintings, Hayeob pigments appear to be the same as Dongrok pigments produced by salt corrosion. Therefore, in order to restore Hayeob pigment, the manufacturing method of Dongrok pigment was studied based on the records of old literature. The Dongrok pigment manufacturing method confirmed in the old literature records is a natural corrosion method in which copper powder and a caustic are mixed and then left in a humid condition to corrode. Based on this, artificial corrosion using a corrosion tester was adopted to corrode the copper powder more efficiently, and an appropriate mixing ratio was selected by analyzing the state of corrosion products according to the mixing ratio of the caustic agent. In addition, the manufacturing method of Dongrok pigment was established by adding a salt removal process to remove residual caustic agents and a purification process to increase chroma during pigment coloring. The prepared Dongrok pigments have a bluish green or green color, show an elliptical particle shape and a form in which small particles are aggregated, and a porous surface is observed. The main constituent elements are copper(Cu) and chlorine(Cl), and the main constituent mineral is identified as atacamite [Cu2Cl(OH)3]. As a result of an accelerated weathering test to evaluate the stability of the prepared Dongrok pigments, it was found that the greenness partially decreased and the yellowness significantly increased as deterioration progressed. Before deterioration, the Dongrok pigments had lower yellowness compared to the Hayeob pigments of the old Dancheong, but after deterioration, yellowness increased significantly, and it was found to have a similar chromaticity range as Dancheong's Hayeob pigments. As a result, the prepared Dongrok pigments were confirmed to be similar to Dancheong's Hayeob pigments in terms of color as well as particle shape and constituent minerals.

  • Egg development and early life history of the endangered species, Microphysogobio rapidus was investigated to get a basic information for biological characteristics and recovery strategy. Eggs were obtained from females by injecting Ovaprim (0.5 mL/kg) and artificially fertilized by dry method in the laboratory. The mature eggs were slightly adhesive and separated with light bluish green and $0.63{\pm}0.02mm$ (n=20) in diameter. Number of eggs in the ovaries were $3,827{\pm}1,225$ (2,850 ~ 5,916). The hatching occurred at 72 hours after fertilization under water temperature of $21{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The newly-hatched larvae were $2.79{\pm}0.04mm$ (n=10) in total length. At 5 days after hatching, they were average $4.10{\pm}0.07mm$ (n=10) in TL and their yolk sacs were completely absorbed. 30 days after hatching, they became to juvenile stage and reached $9.74{\pm}0.24mm$ (n=10) in TL. At 100 days after hatching, the band patterns and external form were similar to those of adults, average $27.00{\pm}1.94mm$ (n=10) in TL.

  • It has been more than ten years since Dukun mine was abandoned. Tailings of waste deposits and slime dumps in the abandoned Dukum mine have been left to be deserted for fifty years. The results of fifty years of neglecting are nothing short of major environmental problems. Slime dumps have been exposed to air and water in the mine over ten years and then soil profile has been formed well. Soil in the upper layer (A horizon) is the light gray color due to the leaching of cations. Soil in the lower layer (A2 horizon, 0.2∼0.3m)is tinted with reddish brown and yellowish brown color due to the development of iron oxides and iron hydroxides. Soil in the lower part of B horizon of (1.0∼3.0m) with the growth of copper and zinc oxides exposes to the bluish green, light blue, and dark gray. Ranging from 3m to 8m in depth, 85 samples were taken from 22 sampling sites with 50m intervals located on the slime dump area with hand auger and trench (open cut). As tailings was distributed, heavy metal elements extracted by the process of surface water and ground water move and disperse in to the hydrosphere. Waste dumps were distributed in and around the mine and water draining from those dumps be a potential source of contamination. Soils, thus, can be dispersed into downslope and downstream through wind and water by clastic movement. These materials may be deposited in another horizon if the water is withdrawn, or if the materials are precipitated as a result of differences in pH, or other conditions in deeper horizons. These were primarily associated with acid mine drainage. The characteristics and rate of release of acid mine drainage are influenced by various chemical and biological reactions at the source of acid generations. Prolonged extration of heavy metal elements has a detrimental effect on the agricultural land and residental area. Twenty soil samples were collected from the agricultural land in the area (0∼30 cm). Seventeen samples were also taken from the sediment in the stream running alongside the dumps. The dispersion patterns of heavy metal elements are as follows: The content of As ranged 2∼6 ppm in a horizon, 20∼125 ppm in B horizon with large amount of clay mineral is concentrated and the content of Cd ranged 1∼2 ppm in A horizon, 4∼22 ppm in B horizon. Like Cd, the content of As, Cu, Zn, Pb in B horizon is higher than that in A horizon (approximately 5∼100 times). When soil formation proceeds in stages, it is necessary to investicate the B horizon with the concentration of heavy metal and preventive measures will have to established.

  • Single crystals of $Yb^{3+}$ doped $Y_3Al_5O_{12}$ up to 25 at.% were grown by the Czochralski method. Using the pulling rate of 0.8 mm/h and the rotation rate of 10 rpm, single crystals with diameters of up to 40 mm and lengths up to 160 mm were obtained. The growth atmosphere was either pure nitrogen or the mixture of nitrogen and oxygen. The crystal was bluish green when using pure nitrogen and the crystal was colorless when using the mixture of 99 % nitrogen and 1 % oxygen. The concentration of $Yb^{3+}$ ions decreased with increasing the length of the crystal and $Yb^{3+}$ concentration of core area was slightly higher than the other areas in the compositional analysis. The fluorescence lifetime decreased with increasing the doping concentration of $Yb^{3+}$ ions.

  • Shank skin color of Korean native chicken (KNC) shows large color variations. It varies from white, yellow, green, bluish or grey to black, whilst in the majority of European breeds the shanks are typically yellow-colored. Three shank skin color-related traits (i.e., lightness [$L^*$], redness [$a^*$], and yellowness [$b^*$]) were measured by a spectrophotometer in 585 progeny from 68 nuclear families in the KNC resource population. We performed genome scan linkage analysis to identify loci that affect quantitatively measured shank skin color traits in KNC. All these birds were genotyped with 167 DNA markers located throughout the 26 autosomes. The SOLAR program was used to conduct multipoint variance-component quantitative trait locus (QTL) analyses. We detected a major QTL that affects $b^*$ value (logarithm of odds [LOD] = 47.5, $p=1.60{\times}10^{-49}$) on GGA24 (GGA for Gallus gallus). At the same location, we also detected a QTL that influences $a^*$ value (LOD = 14.2, $p=6.14{\times}10^{-16}$). Additionally, beta-carotene dioxygenase 2 (BCDO2), the obvious positional candidate gene under the linkage peaks on GGA24, was investigated by the two association tests: i.e., measured genotype association (MGA) and quantitative transmission disequilibrium test (QTDT). Significant associations were detected between BCDO2 g.9367 A>C and $a^*$ ($P_{MGA}=1.69{\times}10^{-28}$; $P_{QTDT}=2.40{\times}10^{-25}$). The strongest associations were between BCDO2 g.9367 A>C and $b^*$ ($P_{MGA}=3.56{\times}10^{-66}$; $P_{QTDT}=1.68{\times}10^{-65}$). However, linkage analyses conditional on the single nucleotide polymorphism indicated that other functional variants should exist. Taken together, we demonstrate for the first time the linkage and association between the BCDO2 locus on GGA24 and quantitatively measured shank skin color traits in KNC.

  • Colonial morphology of the various yeasts grown on the yeast morphology agar medium containing orange-yellow pigments extracted from the fruits of Gardenia jasminoides (GJPM) was investigated in hopes of the differential identification of yeasts on primary cultures. Colonies of Candida lusitaniae and Ca. guilliermondii on GJPM turned to prussian blue within three days of incubation and Ca. tropicalis and Ca. viswanathii turned to bluish gray but the latter species turned to deep blue after 7 days. Ca. krusei, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Torulopsis glabrata showed neutral gray, grayish green, and baby blue respectively after one or two weeks. However, the colonies of Ca. albicans and parapsilosis remained unchanged even after 20 days. Colonial color of Cryptococcus neoformans showing brown to purple brown was distinguishable not only from buff color of Cr. laurentii after one or two weeks incubation but also from those of Candida spp. Growth of certain species was promoted on GJPM. The findings clearly showed that Ga. jasminoides pigments medium was useful to the morphological differentiation of medically important yeasts which were often encountered in sputum or other clinical specimens.

  • A large variety of mineral pigments has been used for Korean paintings and it has known that organic pigments have been used together on the Buddhist painting and the portrait. Haehakbando-do, which is from Honolulu Academy Museum in the United States, 12-fold screen was commissioned by Court of the late Joseon Dynasty in order to pray for the King's longevity. Therefore, it seems that all material used including pigments were selected very carefully and a great deal of technical effort was gone into its process. The purposes of this research were to estimate the pigments and the contributory elements of each color used on Haehakbando-do, in accordance with the conservation treatment carried out by Gochang Conservation Institute throughout last year. Without extracting sample, property of pigment was measured by nondestructive method, X-ray spectral analysis, and by comparing with the data about ancient pigments. In spite of the limited range of pigment analysis by nondestructive method, it should be noted that this method would not cause damage to the cultural properites. White pigment was found in all colored parts except the background, so it can be suggested that white color was used as a grounding of other color pigments. This would be flake white[$2PbCO_3{\cdot}Pb(OH)_2$] as Pb was found. Pb was the only element could be found in yellow, however, it can be organic pigment like Gamboge as same as background. Red would be Cinnabar (HgS) as hydrargyrum (Hg) was detected. For the light purple in cloud, organic pigments were probably used since any element is not detected except for Pb, which is used for background. It is possible that green color is the mixture of Malachite[$CuCO_3{\cdot}Cu(OH)_2$] and Azurite [$2CuCO_3{\cdot}Cu(OH)_2$], which share Cu as their main element. Azurite[$2CuCO_3{\cdot}Cu(OH)_2$] was used for bluish pigments. Black is carbon compound. For gold, solid gold (Au) was detected. It shows that gold was gilded on the flake white background. Red painted on the frame of screen was identified as Cinnabar (HgS) and the gold pattern was solid gold (Au). The supporting leg of folding screen was made of brass because both copper and zinc were detected. In conclusion, white pigment was used as grounding of all colors of Haehakbando-do, and specific pigments were used for each color. Additionally, result from the analysis of several pigments shows that mineral pigment and organic pigment, or different mineral pigments were mixed to make various colors.

  • The ZnS:Cu,Cl thick film electroluminescent devices with the stacking type(separated with phosphors and insulator layers) and the composite type (mixed with phosphor and insulator materials) emission layers were fabricated on ITO/glass substrates by the screen printing methods. The opical and electrical properties were investigated as fundations of applied voltages and frequencies. In the stacking type, the luminance was about 58 cd/$\m^2$ at the applied voltage of 400Hz, 200V and increased to 420 cd/$\m^2$ with increasing the frequency to 30Hz. For the composite type devices, the threshold voltage was 45V and the maximum luminance was 670 cd/$\m^2$ at the driving condition of 200V, 30Hz. The value of luminance of the composite type device showed 1.5 times higher than that of stacking type device. The main emission peak was 512 nm of bluish-green color at 1Hz frequency below and shifted to 452 nm in the driving frequency over 5Hz showing the blue omission color. There were no distinct differences of the main emission peaks and color coordinate for both samples.

  • Ba2-xSrxSiO4:Eu2+ phosphor particles with the high photoluminescence (PL) intensity under long wavelength ultraviolet (UV) were prepared by spray pyrolysis. The photoluminescence, morphological and crystalline characteristics of $Ba_{2-x.}Sr_{x.}SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor particles prepared by spray pyrolysis were investigated. $Ba_{2-x.}Sr_{x.}SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor particles prepared by spray pyrolysis had various colors from bluish green to yellow by changing the ratio of barium and strontium of the host material. In case of x=0, the main emission peak of $Ba_2SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor was 500 nm. In case of x=2, the main emission peak of $Sr_2SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor was 554nm. $Ba_{2-x.}Sr_{x.}SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor particles obtained by spray pyrolysis had spherical shape and hollow structure. On the other hand, the post-treated $Ba_{2-x.}Sr_{x.}SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor particles had large size and irregular shape. The $Ba_{1.488}Sr_{0.5}SiO_4:Eu_{0.012}{^{2+}}$ phosphor particles had the maximum PL intensity after post-treatment at temperature of $1300^{\circ}C$ for 3h under reduction atmosphere.

  • This study investigated the changes in textural characteristics that occurred by adding maltose syrup, dextrin, and sucrose to whole egg gels, by assessing coagulation after cooling. It also examined the optimal NaCl and sucrose concentrations for whole egg gels sensory evaluations, and then studied how the addition of sucrose effected gel formation and textural characteristics under optimal NaCl concentration. The additions of maltose syrup, dextrin, and sucrose, presented some color changes. The greater the addition of maltose syrup or dextrin, the lower the L, a, and b values of the whole egg gel and whole egg liquid, and ultimately the color turned dark bluish green. With increasing additions of sucrose, maltose syrup, and dextrin, the viscosity of the whole egg liquid increased slightly. In terms of the mechanical texture characteristic of the gel, the texture was most elastic with the 0.8% addition of sucrose, and hardness decreased by increasing the ratio of added sucrose. Increasing amounts of maltose syrup resulted in less hardness and SF. And for dextrin, the SF increased up to 2.5 and then decreased, and hardness decreased with increasing amounts of dextrin. Based on sensory evaluations, the 0.8% addition of NaCl was significantly preferred(p<0.05), in terms of salty taste. The overall preference scores indicated that the whole egg gel made with 0.3% sucrose and the optimal NaCl concentration(0.8%) was most preferred, and each sample was significant(p<0.05). Under the optimal 0.8% NaCl concentration increasing the sucrose concentration resulted in a darker egg gel color, in terms the L value. SF, NF, and hardness, which are mechanical texture parameters, were when 0.8% sucrose and the optimal NaCl concentration of 0.8% were added to whole egg liquid, in preparing the whole egg gel.
