Seagrass epiphyte blooms potentially have important economic and ecological consequences in Tampa Bay, one of the Gulf of Mexico's largest estuaries. As part of a Tampa Bay pilot study to monitor the impact of environmental stresses, precise characterization of epiphyte diversity is required for efficient management of affected resources. Thus, epiphyte diversity may be used as a rational basis for assessment of ecosystem health. In May 2001, epiphytic species encompassing green, brown and red macroalgae were manually collected from dense and sparse seagrass beds of Thalassia testudinum and Syringodium filiforme. A total of 20 macroalgal epiphytes, 2 Chlorophyta, 2 Phaeophyta, and 16 Rhodophyta, were found on T. testudinum and S. filiforme seagrass at the four sampling sites (Bishop Harbor, Cockroach Bay, Feather Sound, and Mariposa Key). The Rhodophyta, represented by 16 species, dominated the numbers of species. Among them, the thin-crusted Hydrolithon farinosum was the most commonly found epiphyte on seagrass leaves. Species number, as well as species frequency of epiphytes, is higher at dense seagrass sites than sparse seagrass sites. Four attachment patterns of epiphytes can be classified according to cortex and rhizoid development: 1) creeping, 2) erect, 3) creeping & erect, and 4) erect & holding. The creeping type is characterized by an encrusting thallus without a rhizoid or holdfast base. Characteristics of the erect type include a filamentous thallus with or without a cortex, and a rhizoid or holdfast base. The creeping and erect type is characterized by a filamentous thallus with a cortex and rhizoid. A filamentous thallus with a cortex, holdfast base, and host holding branch is characteristics of the erect and holdfast attachment type. This study characterized each species found on the seagrass for epiphyte identification.
The physical factors and chemical contents were studied at 8 stations within Masan Bay, differing in depth and location with respect to inner and outer harbours. It is a relatively small bay with a long and narrow outlet. The water temperature and salinity at the inner bay was rather subject to change on weather condition of the neighbouring land than on the effects of the water mass of outer bay. The high nutrient contents in the bay were caused by the sewage and industrial activities. The outer harbour was less polluted than that of the inner bay; the high contents were significantly decreased from the entrance of the outer harbour. While the high disolved oxygen contents, over saturation in the surface strata may be the result of nearly all year round phytoplankton blooms, the lack of oxygen contents in the bottom strata were caused by the inadequate mixing of water mass and organic matters. The frequent red tide in the area may be the results of inflowing raw sewage, industrial activities of neighbouring land and inadequate mixing of water masses.
The distribution of dinoflagellate cysts have been investigated at 6 stations in Masan Bay, a well known area of red tide in the southern coastal waters of Korea, from May 1986 to March 1987. During the study, a total of 11 species in dinoflagellate cysts were isolated from surface sediments, representing 6 genera, 9 species and 2 unidentified species. The standing crops of dinoflagellate cyst varied extensively by month and station; ranging from 48 to 1,279 cells/cm$^3$ and showing major peaks in July. August and February. At stations, the distribution was most abundant at st. 4 (mouth of the bay), whereas it was very low at st. 1 (inner bay), where motile cell's blooms occur throughout the year. Thus, It is speculated that the distribution between the plankton and cyst populations of dinoflagellates show the different temporal and spatial patterns in a semi-closed bay like this survey area.

This study conducted a quantitative assessment on the environmental flows associated with climate change in the Gosam Reservoir, Korea. The application of RCP 8.5 climate change scenario has found that the peak value of High Flow Pulses has increased by 36.0 % on average compared to historical data (2001 ~ 2010), which is likely to cause disadvantage on flood control and management but the increase in peak value is expected to make a positive impact on resolving the issue of green algal blooms, promoting vegetation in surrounding areas and encouraging spawning and providing habitats for native species by releasing a larger amount of landslides as well as organic matters than the past. However, the decreasing pattern of the peak value of High Flow Pulses is quite apparent with the trend of delay on the occurrence time of peak value, necessitating a long-term impact analysis. The peak value of Large Floods shows a clear sign of decrease against climate change scenario, which is expected to lead to changes in fish species caused by degraded quality of water and decreasing habitats. A quicker occurrence of Small Floods is also expected to make an impact on the growth cycle of aquatic plants, and the reduction in occurrence frequency of Extreme Low Flows is to contribute to increasing the population of and raising the survival rate of native fish, greatly improving the aquatic ecosystem. The results of this study are expected to be useful to establish the water environment and ecological system in adapting or responding to climate change.
Understanding the abundance and distribution of massive jellyfish is necessary to forecast where or when their blooms will happen. The acoustic technique is one of the most useful methods of obtaining information if the acoustic characteristics of the targets are known. This study was conducted to determine the acoustic target strength (TS, dB) of two jellyfish species, Aurelia aurita and Cyanea nozakii, in the southern coast of Korea. For the ex situ measurements, 120, 200, and 420 kHz split beam transducers were used, and jellyfish with various bell lengths were arranged to prepare multiple jellyfish. Under 2 vertical individuals, the mean TS for multiple A. aurita at 120, 200, and 420 kHz was -72.7, -71.7, and -68.2 dB, respectively. In the case of 5 vertical individuals, the mean TS of the species was -71.3, -68.2, and -62.0 dB. Finally, the mean TS of C. nozakii at 120, 200, and 200 kHz was -62.0, -60.3, and -58.2 dB under 2 individuals and -58.1, -57.4, and -54.0 dB under 4 individuals, respectively. For both species, higher numbers of jellyfish resulted in a higher TS. In addition, higher frequencies were associated with a higher TS for the same jellyfish. These TS results for two species can be used as essential data for the acoustic detection of jellyfish in an open ocean or coastal area.
Phytoplankton production is affected by various physico-chemical factors of environment. However, one of the most critical factors generally accepted as controlling primary production of phytoplankton is nutrients. It has recently been found that the succession of phytoplankton groups and species are closely related to the chemical properties of ambient water including nutrient limitation and their ratios. In Jangmok Bay, silicate and nitrate are primarily supplied by rainfall, while phosphate and ammonia are supplied by wind stress. Typhoons are associated with rainfall and strong wind stress, and when typhoons pass through the South Sea, such events may induce phytoplankton blooms. When nutrients were supplied by heavy rainfalls during the rainy season and by summer typhoons in Jangmok Bay, the dominant taxa among the phytoplankton groups were found to change successively with time. The dominant taxon was changed from diatoms to flagellates immediately after the episodic seasonal events, but returned to diatoms within 3~10 days. Pseudo-nitzschia spp. were dominant mainly in the presence of low phosphate levels during the first of the survey which included the rainy season, while Skeletonema costatum was dominant when phosphate concentrations were high due to the strong wind stress during the latter half of the survey as a result of the typhoon. The competition between S. costatum and Chaetoceros spp. appeared to be regulated by the silicate concentration. S. costatum preferred high silicate and phosphate concentrations; however, Chaetoceros spp. were able to endure low silicate concentrations. These results implied that, in coastal ecosystems, the input patterns of each nutrient supplied by rainfall and/or wind stress appeared to contribute to the summer succession of phytoplankton groups and species.
The purpose of this study is to investigate seasonal difference in linear trends in satellite-derived chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) and their related environmental changes in the South Sea of Korea (SSK) and East China Sea (ECS) for recent 15 years (Jan. 1998~Dec. 2012) by analyzing climatological data of Chl-a, Rrs(555), sea surface wind (SSW) and nutrient. A linear trend analysis of Chl-a data reveals that, during recent 15 years, the spring bloom was enhanced in most of the ECS, while summer and fall blooms were weakened. The increased spring (Mar. - May) Chl-a was associated with strengthened winter (Dec. - Feb.) wind that probably provided more nutrient into the upper ocean from the deep. The causes of decreased summer (Jun. - Aug.) Chl-a in the northern ECS were uncertain, but seemed to be related with the nutrient limitation. Recently (after 2006), low-salinity Changjiang diluted water in the south of Jeju and the SSK had lower phosphate that caused increase in N/P ratio with Chl-a decrease. The decreased fall (Sep. - Nov.) Chl-a was associated with weakened wind that tends to entrain less nutrient into the upper ocean from the deep. This study suggests that phytoplankton in the ECS differently changes in response to environmental changes depending on season and region.

Eutrophication of surface waters is of concern worldwide, because it can result in many undesirable water-quality and ecological problems, such as hypoxic 'dead' zones and harmful algal blooms, both associated with considerable economic costs. In this study, we used LSM (Land Surface Model) to simulate nitrogen in five major rivers in the Southern Korean Peninsula. The main objective of this research was to enhance nitrogen data for input of LM3V model in South Korea. Input data for nitrogen fluxes were categorized into three sections including agriculture fertilizer, livestock manure, atmosphere deposition, biological fixation, and sewage pollutants were used as the nitrogen input. For using LM3V model, the nitrogen input data were regenerated by considering states of agriculture and industry in South Korea at a $1/8^{\circ}$ resolution. Then, we simulated stream/river flows and N loads throughout the entire drainage networks in South Korea at a $1/8^{\circ}$ resolution. By using the same parameters for the entire country ($100,210km^2$), composed of 5 river basins with varying climate and land use, the model simulates spatial (11 sites) and temporal (1999~2010) patterns of flows and nitrate-N loads are resonable by comparing observed flow and nitrate-N loads. The r (Pearson's linear correlation) for water temperature, flow and nitrate-N at river were 080~0.93, 0.62~0.92 and 0.5~0.9 respectively. Based on enhanced N input data and model results, we find that LM3V model as land surface model can be applied in South Korea with interaction of atmosphere and land conditions.
Recently, the occurrence of harmful algae blooms from the Chattonella group has been increasing and expanding in the southern and western seas of Korea. We investigated the relationship between growth kinetics and nutrients in the harmful algae Chattonella marina and Chattonella ovata of the South Sea, Korea. As a result; high concentrations of ammonium ($30\;{\mu}M$ and above) was not effective to the growth of C. ovata, while C. marina displayed good growth at concentration of $100\;{\mu}M$. The half-saturation constant ($K_s$) of C. marina for ammonium ($2.51\;{\mu}M$), nitrate ($5.36\;{\mu}M$) and phosphate ($0.75\;{\mu}M$) was higher than C. ovata (1.85, 4.01, and $0.61\;{\mu}M$, respectively). This indicates that C. ovata can achieve higher cell densities than C. marina under lower nutrient conditions. These $K_s$ values were comparatively higher than those of diatoms and other flagellates previously reported. Therefore, our results indicate that the growth of C. marina and C. ovata is less adapted to lower nutrient environments than other competition species, such as Skeletonema costatum and Cochlodinium polykrikoides.
This study focused an water quality response to land-based pollution loads and the appropriate pollutant load reduction in Chinhae Bay using an eco-hydrodynamic model. Land-based discharge foam urban areas, industrial complex and sewage treatment plant was the greatest contributor to cause red-tide blooms and summer hypoxia. Tidal currents velocity af the ebb tide was about 10 cm/s stronger than that of the flood tide. A residual current was simulated to. have a slightly complicated pattern with ranging from 0.1 to. 2.7 cm/s. In Masan Bay, pollutant materials cannot flaw from the inner to the outer bay easily because af residual currents flaw southward at surface and northward at the bottom. The simulation results of COD distribution showedhigh concentrations aver 3 mg/L in the inner part of Masan Bay related pollutant discharge, and charge, and lower levels less than 1.5mg/L in the central part of Chinhae Bay. For improvement water quality in Chinhae Bay, it is necessary to reduce the organic and inorganic loads from paint sources by mare than 50% and ameliorate severe polluted sediment.
