To develop high-strength high-volume ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) concrete, this study investigated the characteristics of strength development and durability of concrete with the water-to-binder ratio of 23% and the GGBFS replacement ratio of up to 65%. The results show that the compressive strength of GGBFS blended concrete is lower than that of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete up to 3-day age, but the becomes higher after 7-day age. Together with strength increase, the pore structure becomes tighter, and thus the resistance to chloride ion penetration increases. Therefore, the GGBFS blended concrete has high resistance to freezing and thawing without additional air-entraining, and high resistance to carbonation despite low amount of calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$). On the other hand, if silica fume (SF) is blended with GGBFS, the strength becomes lower than that of the concrete blended with GGBFS only, and the resistance to chloride ion penetration deceases. Therefore, it needs further studies on the reaction of SF in high-strength high-volume GGBFS concrete.

The use of ternary blended cement consisting of Portland cement, granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) and fly ash has been on the rise to improve marine concrete structure's resistance to chloride attack. Therefore, this study attempted to investigate changes in chloride attack resistibility of concrete through NT Build 492-based chloride migration experiments and test of concrete's ability to resist chloride ion penetration under ASTM C 1202(KS F 2271) when 1.5-2.0% of alkali-sulfate activator (modified alkali sulfate type) was added to the ternary blended cement mixtures (40% ordinary Portland cement + 40% GGBFS + 20% fly ash). Then, the results found the followings: Even though the slump for the plain concrete slightly declined depending on the use of the alkali-sulfate activator, compressive strength from day 2 to day 7 improved by 17-42%. In addition, the coefficient from non-steady-state migration experiments for the plain concrete measured at day 28 decreased by 36-56% depending on the use of alkali-sulfate. Furthermore, total charge passed according to the test for electrical indication of concrete's ability to resist chloride ion penetration decreased by 33-62% at day 7 and by 31-48% at day 28. As confirmed in previous studies, reactivity in the GGBFS and fly ash improved because of alkali activation. As a result, concrete strength increased due to reduced total porosity.

Strength model for blasted furnace slag mortar blended with sodium was investigated in this study. The main parameters of AAS (alkali activated slag) mortar were dosage of alkali activator, water to binder ratio (W/B), and aggregate to binder ratio (A/B). For evaluating the property related to the dosage of alkali activator, sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$) of 4~8% was added to 4% dosage of sodium hydroxide (NaOH). W/B and A/B was varied 0.45~0.60 and 2.05~2.85, respectively. An alkali quality coefficient combining the amounts of main compositions of source materials and sodium oxide ($Na_2O$) in sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate is proposed to assess the compressive strength of alkali activated mortars. Test results clearly showed that the compressive strength development of alkali-activated mortars were significantly dependent on the proposed alkali quality coefficient. Compressive strength development of AAS mortars were also estimated using the formula specified in the previous study, which was calibrated using the collected database. Predictions from the simplified equations showed good agreements with the test results.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical and carbon-capture properties of foam concrete containing stainless steel argon oxygen decarbonization(AOD) slag. AOD slag was used as a binder, and foam concrete having a foaming ratio of 69 ± 0.5 % and a slurry density of 573.2 to 578.6 kg / ㎥ was produced. In order to examine the effect of carbonation, blended specimen was cured by two types : normal curing and CO2 curing. As a result of the experiment, the specimens incorporating AOD slag showed higher compressive strength than Plain after CO2 curing. According to the analysis of the image of foam concrete, it was confirmed that the ST30 has a lower total pore volume and average pore size than plain, resulting in high compressive strength. The SEM analysis confirmed the formation of calcite by carbonation of AOD slag. Through the thermogravimetric analysis, the increase of CO2 uptake was confirmed by the incorporation of AOD slag. Foam concrete has a higher porosity than normal concrete, so it is expected that carbon-capture performance can be improved by using a AOD slag.

Mineral admixtures have been widely used to produce concrete. Pozzolans have been utilized as partially replacement for Portland cement or blended cement in concrete based on the materials' properties and the concrete's desired effects. Several environmental problems associated with producing cement have led to partial replacement of cement with other pozzolans. Furnace slag and fly ash are two of the pozzolans which can be appropriately used as partial replacements for cement in concrete. However, replacing cement with these materials results in significant changes in the mechanical properties of concrete, more specifically, compressive strength. This paper aims to intelligently predict the compressive strength of concretes incorporating furnace slag and fly ash as partial replacements for cement. For this purpose, a database containing 1030 data sets with nine inputs (concrete mix design and age of concrete) and one output (the compressive strength) was collected. Instead of absolute values of inputs, their proportions were used. A hybrid artificial neural network-genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) was employed as a novel approach to conducting the study. The performance of the ANN-GA model is evaluated by another artificial neural network (ANN), which was developed and tuned via a conventional backpropagation (BP) algorithm. Results showed that not only an ANN-GA model can be developed and appropriately used for the compressive strength prediction of concrete but also it can lead to superior results in comparison with an ANN-BP model.
Carbonation resistance is one of the most influencing factors on durability of concrete. Alkali activated slag (AAS) is known to have weaker resistance for carbonation than OPC due to the low calcium contents. In this paper, the carbonation characteristic of AAS mortar which is related to the basicity (CaO/$SiO_2$) was investigated. In order to give the various basicity conditions, SM (source material) was blended with quicklime (CaO) and silicon dioxide ($SiO_2$) by adopting mechano-chemical treatment method. Experiments including flow test, compressive strength test, carbonation depth test, together with XRD, FTIR and TGA were employed to evaluate the effects of basicity of SM on the carbonation characteristics. The test results showed that the carbonation resistance effectively increased with the increase of the basicity of SM.
CO2 injection well sealant is vulnerable to supercritical CO2 (scCO2) exposure. To develop an alternative to the conventional sealant system (class G cement/class F fly ash), the performance of slag cement (SPC) systems containing class F fly ash (FFA) or class C fly ash (CFA) was evaluated and compared with the conventional sealant under scCO2 conditions. All sealant systems showed an immediate increase in compressive strength upon scCO2 exposure and, at 37.6 MPa, SPC/CFA showed the highest compressive strength after 14 days, which was much higher than the 29.8 MPa of the conventional sealant system. Substantial decreases in porosity were observed in all sealant systems, which were partly responsible for the increase in strength. Carbonation reactions led to pH decreases in the tested sealants from 12.5 to 10~11.6. In particular, the greatest decrease in pH in slag cement/class C fly ash probably supported relatively sustainable alkali activation reactions and the integrity of cement hydrates in this system. XRD revealed the presence of CaCO3 and a decrease in the content of cement hydrates in the tested sealants upon scCO2 exposure. TGA demonstrated a greater increase of CaCO3 and calcium-silicate-hydrate phases in SPC/CFA than in the conventional sealant upon scCO2 exposure.
