Helicopter rotor blade is required to be designed by considering the interacting effects among aerodynamics, flexibility, and controllability. The reverse design allows the structural components to have common characteristics by using the configuration numerics and experimental results. This paper aims to design the composite rotor blade which will feature common characteristics with that of BO-105. The present engineering design procedure is done by dividing the rotor blade into a few sections and composite laminates across the cross section. For each section, variational asymptotic beam sectional analysis (VABS) program is used to evaluate its flapwise, lagwise, and torsion stiffnesses to have discrepancy smaller than certain tolerance. Finally, CAMRAD II is used to predict the stress acting on the rotor blade during the specific flight condition and to check whether the present deign is structurally valid.

Purpose: Bone tumor occurred in femur frequently involve proximal intertrochanteric region or distal metaphyseal region. Sometimes, the pathologic fracture can happen according to the size of tumor due to the substantial biomechanical stresses. Therefore, the prognosis can be improved biomechanically by the angled blade plate considering the anatomic configuration after the excision of tumor. Materials and Methods: Between October 1991 and April 2005, there were a total of 16 patients(17 cases) who were treated by the excision of tumor and internal fixation with the angled blade plate for bone tumor occurred in femur. After the excision of tumor, we filled the cavity by bone graft in 11 cases and bone cement in 6 cases. The internal fixation was used by angled blade plate in all cases. Result: The average follow-up time was 55.5 months(6-144 months) in 16 patients(17 cases). No metal failure occurred after the operation. Reoperation was performed in 4 cases due to tumor recurrence, and the internal fixation was firm until that. Conclusion: The angled blade plate can prevent the fracture until grafted bone incorporated to host bone, and protect fragile connection between cement and host bone.

The aerodynamic design of a proprotor for the Smart UAV adopting tiltrotor aircraft concept is conducted in this study. Since proprotor of tiltrotor aircraft is operated at both rotary and fixed wing mode with single configuration rotor, the proprotor has to be designed to meet performance requirements for both flight modes. The aerodynamic design of proprotor is accomplished by combining three sources of data - the proprotor performance data, the aerodynamic data of vehicle, and the performance data of engine. The performance analysis code for proprotor is based on the combined momentum and blade element theory and validated by comparison with the TRAM data. In order to design configuration for a proprotor satisfying requirements for both rotary and fixed wing mode, various kind of performance maps are constructed for many performance and configuration parameters. From the analysis the twist angle of 38 degrees and the solidity of 0.118 are decided to be the optimal geometric parameters for both operating conditions.
In this study, an optimal structural design of composite helicopter blades is performed using the genetic algorithm-based optimizer PSGA (Particle Swarm assisted Genetic Algorithm). The blade sections consist of the skin, spar, form, and balancing weight. The sectional geometries are generated using the B-spline curves while an opensource code Gmsh is used to discretize each material domain which is then analyzed by a finite element sectional analysis program Ksec2d. The HART II blade formed based on either C- or D-spar configuration is exploited to verify the cross-sectional design framework. A numerical simulation shows that each spar model reduces the blade mass by 7.39% and 6.65%, respectively, as compared with the baseline HART II blade case, while the shear center locations being remain close (within 5% chord) to the quarter chord line for both cases. The effectiveness of the present optimal structural design framework is demonstrated, which can readily be applied for the structural design of composite helicopter blades.

In jet engines, turbine blade cooling has an extremely important role. The pin-fin array, which is situated close to the trailing edge of the blade, aids in internal cooling of the gas turbine blades and preserves the structural integrity of the blade. Previous studies often focused on pin-fin configurations, but the current research focuses on improving the geometry at the endwalls to reduce wake vortices behind the pin-fins and enhance heat transfer at the endwalls location. Using the k-ω turbulence model, a numerical study was conducted on a ribbed shape situated on the walls between pin-fin arrays, spanning a Reynolds number range of 7400 to 36000, in order to determine the heat transport characteristics. The heat transfer efficiency coefficient and Nusselt number increase dramatically with the revised wall configuration, according to the numerical data. The channel's heat transfer efficiency is increased by enlarging the heat transfer areas near the pin-fins and by the interaction of the flow with the endwalls. The addition of ribs causes the Nusselt number of the new model to climb from 78% to 96% at the previously given Reynolds numbers, and the heat transfer efficiency index to rise from 60% to 73%. The height (Hr), position (Lr), forward width (Wf), and backward width (Wb) of the ribs are among the geometric elements that were looked at in order to determine how they affected the performance of heat transmission. In comparison to the reference design, the parametric study results demonstrate that the best forward width (Wf/R=18.75%) and backward width (Wb/R=31.25%) increase the heat transfer efficiency index by 0.4% and 1.3%, respectively.
The present study investigates the effects of rib arrangements and aspect ratios of a rectangular duct simulating the cooling passage of a gas turbine blade. Two different V-shaped rib configurations are tested with the aspect ratios (W/H) of 3 to 6.82. One is the continuous V-shaped rib configuration with $60^{\circ}$ attack angle, and the other is the discrete V-shaped rib configuration with $45^{\circ}$ attack angle. The square ribs with the pitch to height ratio of 10.0 are installed on the test section in a parallel arrangement for both rib configurations. Reynolds numbers based on the hydraulic diameter are changed from 10,000 to 30,000. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to measure local heat/mass transfer coefficients. For the continuous V-shaped rib configuration, two pairs of counter-rotating vortices are generated in a duct, and high transfer region is formed at the center of the ribbed walls of the duct. However, for the discrete V-shaped rib configuration with $45^{\circ}$ attack angle, complex secondary flow patterns are generated in the duct due to its geometric feature, and more uniform heat/mass transfer distributions are obtained for all tested cases

This paper describes the test carried out on an experimental study of fuselage drag and stability characteristics of a helicopter configuration and the test techniques developed for the testing and the lessons learned in the Agency for Defense Development Low Speed Wind Tunnel(ADD-LSWT). The main objective of this test is to determine the drag and stability characteristics of helicopter configurations according to the various configuration changes. The fuselage model with a highly modular structure is a representation of 1:8 scale of the external contour of the conceptual design helicopter configuration with rotating main rotor hub including blade stubs capable of rotating up to 500 rpm. The test results are compared with the available similar data and fair to good agreement is obtained.

In the early stage of helicopter design, an optimal configuration is usually determined after a numerous parametric study about the aerodynamic performance due to geometric variation. In order to improve the aerodynamic performance of a shrouded tail rotor, optimization of the tip clearance gap between blade and shroud, the blade planform shape, and the arrangement of blade spacing is required. In the present study, the aerodynamic performance characteristics of a shrouded tail rotor due to geometric variation was investigated by using an inviscid compressible unstructured mesh flow solver for rotary wings.

It has been recognized that the flow in the blade passage of an axial turbomachinery rotor is very complex and is influenced by various flow phenomena, of which the tip leakage flow passing through the gap between rotor blade tip and casing plays a significant role. The losses produced due to the existence of the clearance have been known to be a large contributor of the rotor overall losses. Despite several experimental studies on non-rotating blade in the cascade configuration, and on actual rotating blades, the detailed nature of the complex flow phenomena associated with tip leakage, however, remains largely unresolved. Thus, a single-stage compressor test rig was built and measurements were taken at upstream and downstream of the rotor of this compressor at the aerodynamics laboratory of University of New South Wales. A five-hole probe and a hot-wire probe were used to measure mean and fluctuating flow parameters. The results show that tip leakage losses rise rapidly beyond tip gap of 0.01 Furthermore, the present project also identifies the regions in the wake behind the rotor of the axial compressor where such losses are concentrated. These results should be useful in the better design of rotors for improved performance of axial compressor.

An unsteady RANS analysis study of the 3-D flow around the NREL Phase VI horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT) was performed using sliding mesh approach. Two different analysis models such as rotor-only and rotor with tower/nacelle were constructed to investigate the blade/tower interaction. Analysis results for the rotor with tower/nacelle were compared with the corresponding NREL's experimental data which produced fairly good validation of the present CFD model. Comparison of flows around those two models also clearly showed the blade/tower interaction even it was small for upwind configuration. Other visualization results and integrated aerodynamic loads including torque of the blade demonstrated the effective unsteady flow simulation capability of the present CFD model.
