  • Some sized centrifugal compressor were designed and their performance measured to investigate the effects of exit blade thickness, width and back swept angle. The impeller of larger blade thickness shows low pressure ratio compared with that of smaller one. Backswept angle have also large effect on the efficiency. Measured values of slip factor are quite different from the estimated values of Wiesner-Busemann model and increase with the flow rate.

  • The flow inside an axial turbomachinery with multi-stage can be characterized as unsteady phenomena. In order to predict accurately these complex unsteady flow patterns including rotor-stator interaction effects, enormous computer resources are required. So it is not compatible in preliminary design process. In this study, steady coupled blade row flow with rotor-stator interaction solver is developed using interrow mixing model and used to predict the performance of the axial fan. To verify the computational method, the calculations are compared with experimental results and show satisfactory agreement with them. The interaction effects on the performance of the axial fan have also been studied by comparing the results of steady coupled blade row and steady single blade row flow calculation.

  • Small-sized fans for cooling electronic components are usually produced by injection molding in unified form including blade and hub. However, in case of middle and large-sized fans, they deal ill various products with varied numbers of blade or stagger angles after designing a single blade by molding or aluminum die casting. At this occasion, it is necessary to study design method for high-performance axial fans can be operated with various numbers of blades or stagger angle using unique blade for specified conditions. Therefore, the goal in this study is developing a optimal design method which improves performance of axial fans within the large range of operating by single blade.

  • Vibration analysis of rotating blade is the main purpose of this study. In the present work, general formulation is proposed to analyze the rotating shell-type structures including the effect of centrifugal force, Coriolis acceleration and initial twist. Furthermore, simplified equations are derived for the case of an open circular cylindrical shell. Based on the concept of degenerated shell element with the Reissner-Mindlin's assumptions, the finite element method is adopted for solving the governing equations. In addition, it is investigated the effect of thermal load on the vibration characteristics of pretwisted blade. Numerical results are summarized for the various parameters such as rotating speed, angle of pretwist and stacking sequence of a composite blade. Also, present results are compared with the previous works and experimental data.

  • Advancements in materialistic life styles and increasing awareness about adverse climatic changes and its negative effects on human life have been the driving force of finding new and clean sources of energy. Wind power has become technologically mature and commercially acceptable on global scale. However, fossil fuels have been the major sources of energy in most countries, renewable energy (particularly wind) is now booming worldwide. To cope with this wind energy technology, various related aspects have to be understood by the scientific, engineering, utility, and contracting communities. This study is an effort towards the understanding of the (i) wind turbine blade and tower structural stability issues, (ii) turbine blade and tower failures and remedial measures, (iii) weather and seismic effects on turbine blade and tower failures, (iv) gear box failures, and (v) turbine blade and tower failure analysis tools.

  • Characteristics of vertical and horizontal axis wind turbines are explained. The speed and direction of wind on the blade of the Darrieus type turbine changes very severely. Therefore dynamic stall happens periodically and the wake from the front blade deteriorates the performance of rear blades. Blade element momentum theory(BEMT) is widely utilized for aerodynamic design and performace prediction of horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT). Computation analysis and wind tunnel test are also performed for the performance prediction.

  • Currently in Japan, the use of the small wind turbine is an upward trend. There are already many well established small wind turbine generators in use and their various failures have been reported. The most commonly sighted failure is blade damage. Thus the research purpose was set to develop a simple failure diagnostic system, where an Acoustic Emission (AE) signal was produced from the failure part of a blade which was measured by AE sensor. The failure diagnostic technique was thoroughly examined. Concurrently, the damage part of the blade was imitated, the AE signal was measured, and a FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) analysis was carried out, and was compared with the output characteristic. When one sheet of a blade was damaged 40mm or more, the level was computed at which failure could be diagnosed.

  • The performance of two vertical-blade eliminators (V1, V2) and two horizontal-blade ones (H1, H2) for absorption chillers were tested in terms of pressure drop and refrigerant entrainment. The test was carried out using a wind tunnel with a cross section of 300 mm$\times$300 mm. The pressure drop of four eliminators tested was found to be in the rage of 1.0~2.7mm $H_2O$ at the face velocity of 2m/s. In the refrigerant entrainment test the vertical-blade eliminators showed much better performance than the horizontal-blade ones. The horizontal-blade eliminators showed satisfactory results at the air velocity of 2m/s but exceeded the limit value at 3 m/s. Since the cooling capacity of a machine is lowered by about 2.5% at the pressure drop of 1 m $H_2O$, more researches are required to reduce the pressure drop in the eliminator.

  • The performance of gas turbines decreases as their operating hours increase. Compressor fouling is the main reason for this time-dependent performance degradation. Airborne particles adhere to the blade surface and results in the change in the blade shape. It is difficult to exactly analyze the mechanism of the compressor fouling because the growing process of the fouling is very slow and the dimension of the fouled depth is very small compared with blade dimensions. In this study, an analytic method to predict the motion of particles and their deposition inside axial flow compressors is proposed. The analytic model takes into account the blade shape and the flow within the blade passage. Comparison of simulation result with field data shows the feasibility of the model. Influence of the particle distribution on the compressor fouling is also examined.
