A novel process for $H_2S$ gas treatment has been introduced, based on the combined action of a chemical absorption step and a biological step involving the biocatalytic activity of the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The aim of this study is the development of a process for $H_2S$ elimination from gas streams based on that chemical/biological method. The immobilized biomass reactor/chemical adsorption system is suitable for application of the removal of $H_2S$. A double stage reactor was used for the experimental work. The removal efficiencies of over 99% were observed in the range of inlet $H_2S$ concentration from 200 to 1,000ppm. The novel process showed the stable elimination efficiencies of over 95% under the retention time range from 20 to 40sec at the 1,000ppm of $H_2S$ inlet concentration.
This study was to investigate the effects of preozonation on the waterborne organic removal by the biologically active GAC fluidized bed on a laboratory scale. The raw water to be treated comes from midstream of Han river. As the ozone dose was increased in the range of $1~3{;\}mgO_{3}/mgDOC$, it produced BDOC from 1.82 to 2.65 times. And BDOC formation can be expressed as [BDOC] = 0.74 + 0.21[DOC] ($R^{2}{\;}={\;}0.8399$). The effects of combination of ozonation followed by BACFB (Biological Activated Carbon Fluidized Bed) process were analyzed. At the ozone doze of $1~3{\;}mgO_{3}/mgDOC$, the large fraction of BDOC was removed by BACFB, but parameter revealed only around 10% reduction.

As a part of our research project for in-situ bioremediation of nitrate contaminated. groundwater, screening studies to determine an effective electron donor (EO) and/or carbon source (CS) such as acetate, ethanol, formate, fumarate, lactate, and propionate were conducted. To evaluate the feasibility for the biological degradation of nitrate, soil microcosm studies using nitrate-contaminated soil and groundwater were performed. The nitrate removal percentage in the order from the highest to the lowest was: formate, fumarate, and ethanol > lactate > propionate. Essentially no nitrate consumption was observed In acetate-fed microcosms. The order of nitrate removal rate from the highest to lowest was fumarate, formate, lactate, ethanol, and propionate. These results suggest that fumarate and formate are promising EDs/CSs for in-situ bioremediation of nitrate - contaminated oxygenated groundwater.

Bacterial community structure composing enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) activated sludge was analyzed phylogenetically by cloning 165 rDNA after direct DNA extraction. Then, this result was compared with 165 rDNA sequences of randomly isolated bacterial species. The results clearly showed that there are no coincidence between the sequences retrieved directly from activated sludge and those of isolated strains, suggesting that many important bacteria are hidden in activated sludge because of the difficulty in isolation and culture of them.
This paper was investigated to clarify the possibility of a biodegradation of materials adsorbed on different porous granular-activated carbons (GACs) such as coal-& coconut-based GAC. Total organic carbon, humic substance and ammonia were used to compare their removal efficiencies. The objective of this study is to determine the adsorption capacity of bioregenerated GAC. When raw water reacted with chloride, the yield of THMs increased as a function of the input amount of chloride. The formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) was investigated in water treated with chlorine when humic acid was used as THM precursor. As the input amount of chloride in raw water increased by two or five-fold to remove the $NH_3$, the chloroform of the THMs significantly increased also five or ten-fold. It was found that the chloroform was significantly removed by the treatment of biological activated carbon (BAG) in comparison with the ozone treatment, and the removal efficiency of THMs in coal-typed GAC was $10-30\%$ better than coconut-typed GAC due to the biological degradation on the surface of the activated carbons.
Various analytical methods such as electron microscopy, quinone analysis, and 16S rDNA sequencing studies were used to investigate the microbial communities and to identify the microorganisms responsible for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) in an anaerobic/aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) fed with acetate. Electron photomicrographs showed that oval-shaped microorganisms of about $0.7\;{\sim}\;1\;{\mu}m$ in diameter dominated the microbial sludge. These microorganisms contained polyphosphate granules and glycogen inclusions, which suggests that they are a kind of phosphorus accumulating organism. Quinone and 16S rRNA sequence analyses showed that the members of Proteobacteria beta subclass were the most abundant species, which were affiliated with the Rhodocyclus-likes group. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the two dominating clones of the beta subclass were most distantly related to Propionivibrio dicarboxylicus DSM 5885 and Rhodocyclus tenuis DSM 109 with about 95% and 96% sequence similarity, respectively. Therefore, it was concluded that the oval-shaped organisms related to the Rhodocyclus-likes group are likely to be responsible for biological phosphorus removal in SBR operation supplied with acetate.
A mathematical model for biological nutrient removal in a sequencing batch reactor process, which is based on the IAWQ Activated Sludge Model No. 2 with a few modifications, has been developed. Twenty water quality components and twenty three kinetic equations are incorporated in the model. The model is structured in the matrix form based on the law of mass conservation using stoichiometry and kinetic equations. Stoichiometric coefficients and kinetic parameters included in the model equations are chosen from the literature. A multistep predictor-corrector algorithm of variable step-size is adopted for solving the vector nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The simulation for experimental results is conducted to evaluate the validity of the model and to calibrate coefficients and parameters. The simulation using the model well represents the experimental results from laboratory. The mathematical model developed in this study may be utilized for the design and operation of a sequencing batch reactor process under the steady and unsteady-state at various environmental conditions.
This study was conducted to use oyster shell as media for biological wastewater treatment. The comparison between the removal efficiencies of the activated sludge and the submerged biofilm process with oyster shell media (5% of reactor volume) for domestic sewage treatment was made. The contaminant removal efficiencies of the submerged process were higher than that of the activated sludge process. And the removal efficiencies of the submerged biofilm process with oyster shell media of 10% and 18% were Investigated at various loading rate. The removal efficiencies of 10% were higher than that of the 18% during the experimental period. The effluent concentration from the sub- merged bloom process using oyster shell media was prediceted by the Stover-Kincannon model.
In this study, the removal characteristics of organic components and nutrients of sewage taken from the Suwon area were investigated in a lab-scale modified DNR (Daewoo Nutrient Removal) process. The modified DNR process consisted of a sludge denitrification tank, an anaerobic tank, an anoxic tank, an aerobic tank, a secondary anoxic tank and a secondary aerobic tank. The proposed process with the average C/N ratio of 3.5 was performed for the sewage treatment. The results were compared with other existing DNR processes. The organic fractions in sewage were analyzed by measuring the oxygen uptake rate. The resulting removal efficiencies of SS, BOD, COD, TN and TP were 93.1%, 95.5%, 86.1%, 67.8% and 80.6%, respectively.
Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) including endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and pharmaceuticals and personal care product chemicals (PPCPs) have recently received more attention because of their occurrence in water bodies and harmful impacts on human health and aquatic organisms. Triclosan is widely used as a synthetic broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent due to its antimicrobial efficacy. However, triclosan detected in aquatic environment has been recently considered as one of CECs, because of the potential for endocrine disruption, the formation of toxic by-products and the development of cross-resistance to antibiotics in aquatic environment. This comprehensive review focuses on the regulations, toxicology, fate and transport, occurrence and removal efficiency of triclosan. Overall, this review aims to provide better understanding of triclosan and insight into application of biological treatment process as an efficient method for triclosan removal.
