This experiment was conducted to investigate the soil nitrogen credit of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) and the nitrogen balance of soybean in soybean-barley cropping systems. Soybean cultivar, Shinpaldalkong2 and barley cultivar, Olbori, were used in soybean mono-cropping (SM), barley monocropping (BM), and barleysoybean double cropping system. The barley-soybean double cropping system was treated with two different levels of nitrogen fertilizers, 0 nitrogen fertilizer (BS-F0), and standard nitrogen fertilizer (BS-F1). Nitrogen and organic matter concentrations in soil of BS-F1 plot on October, 2001 were increased $4.8\%\;and\;5.9\%$, respectively, compared with those on October, 2000. The ranges of BNF rate in soybean were $69.1\~ 88.2\%$ in two years, and the rate was the highest in BS-F0 plot and the lowest in SM plot. The ranges of nitrogen harvest index (NHI) in all treatments were $83.9\~86.7\%$. The yield was 270 kg/10a in BSF1 plot and 215 kg/10a in BS-F0 plot. However, the nitrogen balances were +0.6 kg/10a of gain of soil nitrogen in BS-F0 plot and -0.4 kg/10a of loss of soil nitrogen in BS-F1 plot. In comparisons of SM and BS-F1 plots, although the seed yields were similar in two plots, the loss of soil nitrogen was higher in SM than BS-F1 plot. Overall, our results suggest that barley-soybean double cropping system was more effective in respect to seed productivity and soil nitrogen conservation than soybean monocropping system, and the N credit to following crops by soybean cultivation was identified in soybean double cropping system.
A highly $CO_2$ tolerant microalga, Chlorella KR-1, has been isolated and used to fix $CO_2$ from actual flue gas. Growth of Chlorella KR-1 with the supply of flue gas from a liquified natural gas boiler was comparable to that obtained with 10% $CO_2$. Chlorella KR-1 produced from $CO_2$ fixation using the flue has about 50% crude protein with balanced amino acid profiles. Toxicity was not detected when the microalga was used as a feedstuff for chicks. These results indicate that the KR-1 cells could be a favorable protein source for poultry.
Many recent studies suggest that the posterior dynamic stabilization(PDS) can be a more physiologically-relevant alternative to the rigid fixation for the patients suffering from low back pain. However, its biomechanical effects or clinically proven efficacies still remain unknown. In this study, we evaluated kinematic behaviors of the lower lumbar spine with the PDS system and then compared to those of the rigid fixation system using finite element (FE) analysis. A validated FE model of intact lumbar spine(L2-L5) was developed. The implanted model was then constructed after modification from the intact to simulate two kinds of pedicle screw systems (PDS and the rigid fixation). Hybrid protocol was used to flex, extend, laterally bend and axially rotate the FE model. Results showed that the PDS systems are more flexible than rigid fixation systems, yet not flexible enough to preserve motion. PDS system allowed $16.2{\sim}42.2%$ more intersegmental rotation than the rigid fixation at the implanted level. One the other hand, at the adjacent level it allowed more range of motion ($2.0%{\sim}8.3%$) than the rigid fixation. The center of rotation of the PDS model remained closer to that of the intact spine. These results suggest that the PDS system could be able to prevent excessive motion at the adjacent levels and restore the spinal kinematics.
The microalgal, Chlorella sp. HA-1, had good $CO_2$ fixation efficiency compared to other algal strains at the same operating condition. In this study, Chorella sp. HA-1 showed similar tolerance both 10% and 20% $CO_2$ concentration. By optimization of the major operation variables such as pH, initial cell concentration, light intensity, the $CO_2$ fixation rate could be raised to a reasonably high value, 372 $gCO_2/m^2{\cdot}day$ in a 3 L internally illuminated photobioreactor. In order to maintain the $CO_2$ fixation rate for a long time, the method of semi-continuous operation was employed, in which dilution ratio was the controlling parameter. Starting with the dilution ratio of 0.5 with the increased increment of 0.1, the constant $CO_2$ fixation rate was obtained.
1. The oxidizability of $NADPH_2$ by quinones in the presence of $NADPH_2$-diaphorase was tested under aerobic conditions. Also the $^{14}CO_2$-fixation rates were compared when Chlorella suspensions were pretreated with $3{\cdot}10^{-5}M$ cocentration of variou quinones for 10 minutes prior and during the $^{14}CO_2$-fixation period. 2. A close correlation seems to exist between the rate of $NADPH_2$ oxidation by quinones and the $^{14}CO_2$-fixation rate. The effect of quinones on $NADPH_2$ oxidation and $^{14}CO_2$-fixation were in the order of Dichlone>06-K>NQ>BQ. 3. It is postulated that the phytotoxicity of quinones on Chlorella is due to the deprival of $NADPH_2$ consequently inhibiting $^{14}CO_2$-fixation, thus causing death of the cells. 4. The effect of quinones on amino acids biosyn-thesis in Chlorella was one of depressed rates, which was especially noted in the case of dichlone. This would be expected from a consideration of $NADPH_2$ deprival and inhibition of $^{14}CO_2$-fixation. Sucrose synthesis was either not affected or rather stimulated, the reasons of which are not clear at the present time.
This experiment was carried out to elucidate the biological activity and absorption characteristics of flavonoids in Rhizobium and Bradyrhizobium and to obtain basic information on host specific nodulation by flavonoids in rhizobium-legume symbiosis. The purpose of the present study was to explore the biological activity and the flavonoid absorption indicates that host-specificity is induced by flavonoids in symbiotic nitrogen fixation. Biological activity increased by daidzein and genistein treatment on B. japonicum KCTC 1539 whereas decreased by luteolin treatment but increased by luteolin treatment on R. meliloti whereas decreased by daidzein and genistein treatment. Daidzein and genistein are absorbed by B. japonicum, KCTC 1539 at higher rate than other flavonoids. Especially, luteolin was absorbed at a least rate. Luteolin are absorbed by R. meliloti KCTC 2353 at higher rate than other flavonoids. Especially, daidzein and genistein was absorbed at a least rate.
This study was carried out to elucidate the biological characteristics of Rhizobia in biological nitrogen fixation system. The results of investigation were as follows; Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis pattern of root lectin in the presence of SDS was ascertained electrophoretically and chromatographically. The purified root lectin formed immunoprecipitin line with anti lectin rabbit IgG. Root lectin, seed lectin and root exudate were tested for chemotactic ability. Chemotactic responses of RCR3407 and KCTC2422 toward root exudate were stronger than those of seed lectin and root lectin, but there didn't occur chemotactic responses of LPN100, not bound with seed lectin and that of LPN101, bound with seed lectin toward root exudate, root lectin and seed lectin. RCR3407, KCTC2422 and LPN-101, which nodulated with soybean, interacted with soybean lectin, but not with pea lectin. LPN-100, which was not nodulated with soybean, didn't interact with soybean lectin.

The biological carbon dioxide fixation using microalgae has been known as an effective carbon dioxide reduction technology. With many environmental factors influencing microalgal productivity, the desirable cultivation factors were investigated using a green alga, Euglena gracilis. It has the high protein and vitamin E to be used as fodder. In batch culture with a photobioreactor, initial pH, temperature, carbon dioxide concentration and light intensity in the optimum cultivation condition were 3.5, $27^{\circ}C$,5-10% and $520{\mu}mol/m^2/s$, respectively. After that, the optimum hydraulic retention time (HRT for the continuous cultivation was 4 days at carbon dioxide concentration of 10%. In this condition, the final dry cell weight was 1.2g/l.
