In this research, biological treatability test was conduced using seawater flocculated tannery wastewater by fixed biofilm reactor. During one cycle, the removal efficiency of organic corbon obtained with fixed biofilm process for treating tannery wastewater was considerably greater than that with activated sludge process. As the hydraulic retention time increased form 0.5day to 4day, removal efficiency of organic carbon was increased from 72% to 87.3%. Attached biomass in media increased with influent organic loading up to 29g MLSS/L, that could reduce the specific organic loading rate. The continual measurement of attached biomass was possible for the operation of the biofilm reactor. Equal and low nitrication rates were observed in both suspended growth activated sludge process and fixed biofilm process, despite commercial nitrifier was seeded. Through the process of treating the tannery wastewater, EC50 values which is measured by the use of Ceriopdaphnia dubia, were decreased to the extent of 50% after treatment of seawater flocculation and of 83% after biological treatment, respectively, compared to those of the untreated wastewater.
A number of experiments were conducted in order to investigate the COD removal rate according to the biofilm thickness in a Fluidized-Bed Biofilm Reactor(FBBR). The following conditions were fixed during the experiments: superficial upflow velocity was 0.47cm/sec, operating temperature was $22{\pm}1{\circ}C$ and pH was about $7{\pm}0.1$. The synthetic wastewater based on glucose was used as a substrate. The COD removal efficiencies were shown as 73% and 95%, respectively, when organic loading rate was increased from $10kgCOD\;/\;{\textrm{m}^3}$.day to $80kgCOD\;/\;{\textrm{m}^3}$.day. Andrew's model of substrate removal rate which was commonly used in fixed-biofilm reactor was transformed and applied in this FBBR experiment to predict substrate removal rate and gave 85% agreement with the experimental values.
Activated carbon particles of 1.274 mm diameter and sand particles of 0.455 mm diameter were employed as the support of the biofilm formed in fluidized bed biofilm reactors(FBBRs) for the wastewater denitrification. Ethanol was used as the electron donor in the anoxic respiration. The steady-state biofilm thickness increased as the nitrate loading rate increased, and the activated carbon particles induced thicker biofilm than the sand particles. The FBBRs with sand support showed higher efficiency and rate of the nitrate removal than those with activated carbon support, and exhibited the biomass concentration of 37 kg/㎥ and the nitrate removal rate of 21 kg N/㎥d.

Most of biological treatment to remove contaminants in municipal wastewater have been conducted by activated sludge process. But, the process have several probIems such as enormous site needed for construction of treatment facilities, unstable treatment due to limited ability to control load fluctuation, frequent sludge bulking and appearance of lots of surplus sludge. In this study, the experiments were performed through submerging biofilm of PEPP media in existing aeration tank with raw water from municipal wastewater treatment plant and then submerging PVDC and PEPP media, different from shape and chemical peculiarity in anoxic reactor. Throughout the experience, nutrient removal efficiency according to HRT, nitrogen phosphorous removal efficiency, behavior of nitrogen and dewatering efficiency have been compared and analysed with those of activated sludge process. As the results, BOD removal efficiency according to BOD volumetric load and F/M ratio was not found any differency in two processes, but was decreased below 90% as going along the condition of high load in activated sludge process. Kinetic coefficient was $K_{max}=1.162day^{-1}$, $K_s=53.77mg/L$, $Y=0.166mgVSS/mgBOD_{rem}$. and $K_d=0.019day^{-1}$. It was found that the removal efficiency, even though in aerobic condition, in biofilm process equipped anoxic reactor was higher than the one in activated sludge process within the range of 70~80%, and became better as HRT increased. Phosphorous removal efficiency was not found any differency in two processes. In biofilm process, treament efficiency even in conditions of high load was not decreased, because the biomass concentration could be maintained in high condition compared with activated sludge process. As HRT increased, suspended and attached biomass was increased and the other hand, F/M ratio was decreased as biomass' increasing. Biomass thickness was increased. from $10.43{\mu}m$ to $10.55{\mu}m$ as HRT increased and density of biomass within $40.79{\sim}41.16mg/cm^2$. The results also present that the dewatering efficiency of sludge generated in biofilm process was higher than in activated sludge process, and became better as HRT increased.
A detachment of biofilm was investigated in an inverse fluidized bed biofilm reactor(IFRBR). The biofilm thickness, 5 and the bioparticle density, Pm were decreased by the increase of Reynolds number, Re and the decrease of biomass concentration, h. The correlations were expressed as $\delta$=6l.6+16.33$b_c$-0.004Re and Ppd=0.3+0.027$b_c$- 2.93x$l0^{-5}$ no by multiple linear regression analysis method. Specific substrate removal rate, q was derived by F/M ratio and biofilm thickness as q=0.44.+0.82F/M-5.Ix10$-4^{$\delta$}$. Specific biofilm detachment rate, bds was influenced by FIM ratio and Reynolds number as $b_{ds}$=-0.26+0.26F/M+ 2.17$\times$$10^{-4}$Re. Specific biofilm deachment rate in an IFBBR was higher than that in a FBRR(fluidized bed biofilm reactor) because of the friction between air bubble and the bioparticles.
In this study, the of MBBR(moving bed biofilm reactor) process for Phosphorus Removal efficiency depending on seasons and the factors affecting phosphorus removal efficiency in the process is evaluated. As a result of experiment, T-P removal efficiency has its highest value in winter, (80.8%). and T-P removal efficiency has its lowest value in autumn, (49%). Optimum SRT for Phosphorus Removal revealed is about 8.8 days and process performs more efficiently as the temperature decreases. It is accepted that nitrate to anaerobic zone is affecting the Phosphorus removal process. With increasing the organic loading rate, Phosphorus removal efficiency also increases. Also, an experiment has been conducted to find out the highest efficiency according to Media existence and it has revealed that Media addition provides better phosphate removal.
Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to study the conversion of sludge from conventional activated sludge to nitrogen-phosphorus removal sludge using two types of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) systems, a conventional SBR and sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). The nitrogen and phosphorus removal characteristics were similar between SBR and SBBR and the removal efficiencies were very low when the influent TOC concentrations were low. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies in SBR were 96% and 77.5%, respectively, which were higher than those in SBBR (88% and 42.5%) at the high influent TOC concentration. In SBBR, the simultaneous nitrification-denitrification was occurred because of the biofilm process. The variations of pH, DO concentration and ORP were changed as the variation of influent TOC concentration both in SBR and SBBR and their periodical characteristics were cleary shown at the high influent TOC concentration. Especially, the pH, DO concentration and ORP inflections, were cleary occurred in SBR compared with SBBR.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the biofilm reactors capable of doing high efficiency treatment. Vertical fluidized bed biofilm reactor(VFBBR) and spiral fluidized bed biofilm reactor(SFBBR) was used for their performence in biodegradation of artificial sewage. The factors influencing the efficiency of those reactors were compared with difference of physical condition. They had same size but different structure to gain access of its unique characteristics. When recycle solution with flow rate of 22 mL/min and artificial sewage with flow rate of 2~10 mL/min were fed into two reactors in aerobic state, the average $COD_{cr}$, removal rate for biodegradation of SFBBR was greater than VFBBR. After reactor feed sewage was constantly maintained as flow rate of 4 mL/min and the recycle solution were changed to 10~32 mL/min respectively, the average $COD_{cr}$ removal rate of artificial sewage in SFBBR was greater than VFBBR. In this experiment for addition of support media into two reactors SFBBR was 4.1% excellent than VFBBR. Above all, SFBBR excelled VFBBR in boidegradation of organic matter in sewage.
While the enhanced biological phosphorus removal(EBPR), in anaerobic/aerobic condition, was known to remove phosphorus by means of metabolism of poly-P microorganisms, the phosphorus removed could be released in the form of ortho-P in the aerobic fixed biofilm reactor. This study was initiated to investigate the cause of ortho-P release in the aerobic fixed biofilm reactor. The resutls indicated that the phosphorus release was caused by autooxidation. The synthesis and release of phosphrous were related to the ORP and the boundary value for the phase change was about 170mV. In the synthesis phase, the phosphorus removal rate per COD removed was $0.023mgP_{syn}/mgCOD_{rem}$. The phosprous contents of the microorganism were 4.3 ~ 6.0% on a dry weight basis.
The objective of this study is to treat contaminated stream by using a UFBR(upflow fixed biofilm reactor) packed with waste-concrete media. This system was tested from June 1999 to January 2000. Over $20.0^{\circ}C$, $COD_{cr}$ removal efficiency did not affected with organic loading rate while, $COD_{cr}$ removal efficiency decreased about 7% with decrease of temperature from $27.0^{\circ}C$ to $8.7^{\circ}C$. Under $16^{\circ}C$, TKN removal efficiency was affected with TKN loading rate. The proposed model apply to mass balance equation of fixed biofilm reactor for predicting effluent was well satisfied with measured value($R^2=0.94$).
