  • To address the need for new intelligent sensing, this paper introduces nano sensors made of carbon nanotube (CNT) composites and presents their preliminary experiments. Having smart material properties such as piezoresistivity, chemical and bio selectivity, the nano composite can be used as smart electrodes of the nano sensors. The nano composite sensor can detect structural deterioration, chemical contamination and bio signal by means of its impedance measurement (resistance and capacitance). For a structural application, the change of impedance shows specific patterns depending on the structural deterioration and this characteristic is available for an in-situ multi-functional sensor, which can simultaneously detect multi symptoms of the structure. This study is anticipated to develop a new nano sensor detecting multiple symptoms in structural, chemical and bio applications with simple electric circuits.

  • The demand of micro electrical mechanical system (MEMS) bio/chemical sensor is rapidly increasing. To prevent the contamination of sensing area, a filtration system is required in on-chip total analyzing MEMS bio/chemical sensor. A nano-filter was mainly applied in some application detecting submicron feature size bio/chemical products such as bacteria, fungi and so on. We suggested a simple nano-filter fabrication process based on replication process. The mother pattern was fabricated by holographic lithography and reactive ion etching process, and the replication process was carried out using polymer mold and UV-imprinting process. Finally the nano-filter is obtained after removing the replicated part of metal deposited replica. In this study, as a practical example of the suggested process, a nano-dot array was replicated to fabricate nano-filter fur bacteria sensor application.

  • The interaction between carbon monoxide (CO) and a cobalt-salen complex (Co(salen)) was studied and applied to detect CO. The metal complex doped PEDOT:PSS film exhibited good sensitivity to CO and differentiate CO from other gases. The response of the composite to CO was reversible (RSD < 5%) change in resistance upon removal of CO gas from the test chamber. The effects of adding Co(salen) in the probe film on the response of the sensor were investigated using AFM, XPS, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The sensitivity of the sensor increased as the Co(salen) concentration enhanced as it increased from 0.0 to 1.5 wt. %, where the highest sensitivity ($%{\Delta}R/R_o$) of $-25.0{\pm}0.05%$ was achieved with 1.0 wt. % Co(salen). The sensor containing probe exhibited a linear response ($R^2$ = 0.983) in the range of 0.5 to 10.0% CO (v/v) $N_2$, and the detection limit was 1.74% CO (v/v) in $N_2$.

  • The efficacy improvement of the light emitting diode (LED) was studied for the realization of small-size, low power consumption, and highly sensitive bio-sensor instrument. The performance of the LED with Mg delta-doping at the interface of AlGaN/GaN super-lattice in p type cladding layer was simulated. The device with Mg delta-doping showed improved current, radiative recombination rate, electroluminescence, and light output power compared to the conventional LED structure. Under the bias condition of 5 V, the improved device exhibited 20.8% increase in the light output power. This is attributed to the increment of hole concentration from stable ionization of Mg in p type cladding layer. This result is expected to be used for the miniaturization, power saving, and sensitivity improvement of the bio-sensor system.
