The flow properties of binder latices for paper coating were investigated, together with dynamic viscoelastic properties of latex films and electron micrographs of latices, under various conditions. The amphoteric latex, binder pigment latex and anionic latex were used in this work. The amphoteric latex has both anionic and cationic functional group on its surface. The binder-pigment with a core-shell structure has dual functions : plastic pigment and binder. The low shear viscosity of binder latices and clay slurry were measured with Brookfield vis cometer. At low-shear rates. the viscosity decreased with increasing particle size of latex. On the amphoteric latex surface, the carboxyl groups are assumed to be fully dissociated over the region of pH 9~12, but the density of negative groups seems to be increased because of the gradual decrease in the degree of dissociation of amino groups. Since the apparent particle size of latex increases with surface charge, the electroviscous effect can be observed. On the anionic latex surface, the charge density is assumed to be nearly constant above pH 8. However, below pH 8 the coagulation of particles could be observed probably because of the decrease in the charge density.

A previous study on the model coatings based on latex-bound plastic pigment coatings (1) has been extended to latex-bound No. 1 clay, ultra-fine ground calcium carbonate (UFGCC), and clay-carbonate pigment mixture coatings, which are being widely used in the paper industry. The latex binder used was a good film-forming, monodisperse S/B latex or 0.15$\mu\textrm{m}$. No. 1 clay was representative of plate-like pigment particles, whereas UFGCC was of somewhat rounded rhombohedral pigment particlel. Both of them had negatively skewed triangular particle size distributions having the mean particle suet of 0.7${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 0.6$\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. Their packing volumes were found to be 62.5% and 657%, respectively. while their critical pigment volume concentrations (CPVC's) were determined to be 52.7% and 50.5% ( average of 45% caused by the incompatibility and 55.9% extrapolated) by coating porosity, respectively. Each pigment/latex coating system has shown its unique relationship between coating properties and pigment concentrations, especially above its CPVC. Notably, the clay/latex coating system hat shown higher coating porosity than the UFGCC/latex system at high pigment concentrations above their respective CPVC's. It was also found that their coating porosity and gloss were inter-related to each other above the CPVC's, as predicted by the theory. More interestingly, the blends of these two pigments have shown unique rheological and coating properties which may explain why such pigment blends are widely used in the industry. These findings have suggested that the unique structure of clay coatings and the unique high-shear rheology of ground calcium carbonate coatings can be judiciously combined to achieve superior coatings. Importantly, the low-shear viscosity of the blends was indicative of their unique packing and coating structure, whereas their high-shear rheology was represented by a common mixing rule, i.e., a viscosity-averaging. Transmission and scanning electron and atomic force microscopes were used to probe the state of pigment / latex dispersions, coating surfaces, freeze fractured coating cross-sections, and coating surface topography. These microscopic studies complemented the above observations. In addition, the ratio, R, of CPVC/(Pigment Packing Volume) has been proposed as a measure of the binder efficiency for a given pigment or pigment mixtures or as a measure of binder-pigment interactions. Also, a mathematical model has been proposed to estimate the packing volumes of clay and ground calcium carbonate pigments with their respective particle size distributions. As well known in the particle packing, the narrower the particle size distributions, the lower the packing volumes and the greater the coating porosity, regardless of particle shapes.

Today's requirements for print-press runnability and print quality demand an optimised absorption and adhesion of printing ink on the paper surface. Modern coating concepts for high glossing offset grades use ultra fine pigments, whereas binder level has continuously been decreased to a minimum in recent years to achieve the highest possible sheet gloss development and for economical reasons. Both the ultra fine pigments and the reduced binder levels lead in many cases to a faster ink setting rate. On the other hand, matt paper grades use relatively coarse pigments leading to a slow ink setting compared to the high glossing papers. Both too fast and too slow ink setting properties implicate drawbacks in print quality and print press runnability. The mechanisms behind the interactions between ink and coating have been presented in many previous publications. The purpose of this study was to determine and quantify how the ink setting rate is influenced by pigment system (GCC and GCC/clay blends), latex level and latex properties in the topcoat of double coated sheet fed offset paper. The roles of binder level and type in the precoat were also assessed. The effect of calendering (temperature and pressure) was studied with one formulation. The resulting ink setting characteristics were tested using three different laboratory testing instruments. The correlation amongst the different laboratory testing methods is discussed. The results show that by varying the latex properties, the pigment system and/or latex addition level, the ink tack development of ink applied to a topcoat pigment system can be significantly influenced. It can be slowed down as often desired with ultra fine pigments or speeded up in the case of coarse pigments. There was no visible effect on the ink setting rate by using different binder systems in the precoat..

The binder plays important roles in determining the quality of pigment coating. In addition to its primary role of binding the pigment to the base paper, the binder performs several other important functions. The binder, also referred to as the adhesive, is the dominant in the aqueous phase of the formulation. Thus it plays a major role in determining viscosity, rheology, water release, and setting time for the coating. Latices based on styrene-butadiene dominate the market for synthetic paper coating binders. Consumption is high and is expected to increase further due to the present tendeyncy toward high-solids coating. The purpose of this study is understanding the impact of various parameters of latex(i.e. Tg, Particle size) affecting prontabilities and optical properties of the coated papers, as well as providing basic information on the use of amphoteric latex for improving print qualities of coated papers. Recently, amphoteric latices, Which are cationic at low pH's but turn anionic at high pH's have attracted interests of paper scientists and engineers. Therefore we investigated the effect of the Tg(glass transition temperature) and particle size of amphoteric latex on the coating qualities. We also studied the effect of mixing ratios (Amphoteric / Anionic)of latex on the coating qualities. Our results showed that Tg and particle size of amphoteric latex have to be controlled for optimizing coated paper qualities. The formulation consisting of 10 parts of amphoteric latex and 5 parts of anionic latex gave best results in ink receptivity, smoothness, air permeability, opacity and sheet gloss. If the results hold for the industrial paper coatings, the amount of expensive amphoteric latex can be reduced while achieving best available printing quality.

The immobilization and consolidation of the model coatings based on the plastic pigment and latex binder of known particle sizes were theoretically Studied in terms of the dense random packing of binary spheres and varying extent of latex film shrinkage. The porosity of the model coatings was calculated based on three proposed latex shrinkage models: Maximum, Minimum, and Linearly Decreasing Latex Shrinkage. The increasing extent of latex shrinkage was calculated up to the critical pigment volume concentration(CPVC) as a function of plastic pigment volume fractions, and the maximum latex shrinkage was estimated from the CPVC. Also, the number of pores and the average equivalent spherical pore diameters were calculated based on those proposed models. The opacity and gloss of the model coatings on polyester films were measured and their porosity was also determined by a simple coat weight-thickness method. As expected, various coating structure-property-composition relationships, such as opacity, gloss, porosity, etc., were shown to exhibit sharp transitions near the CPVC. The CPVC values determined by the opacity, gloss, and porosity vs. PVC relationships, respectively, agreed very well with each other. Especially, the CPVC's determined by the opacity and porosity vs. PVC curves were identical. The comparison between the theoretically calculated and experimental porosity values showed that the intermediate value between the maximum and minimum latex shrinkage would best fit the experimental porosity data. The effect of plastic pigment particle size on the optical properties and porosity of model coatings was also studied and it was observed that the coating opacity and porosity increased with increasing plastic pigment particle size, but the gloss decreased. The ink gloss of the uncalendered model coatings applied onto commercial sheet offset coated papers was shown to be affected by both the coating gloss and porosity: the higher the coating gloss, the higher the ink gloss, but the higher the coating porosity, the lower the ink gloss. Their printability was also studied in terms of the number of passes-to-fail and the rate of ink setting as a function of both plastic pigment volume fractions and plastic pigment particle sizes. A minimum crack-free temperature(MCR) of latex-bound coatings was proposed to better predict the behaviors of latexes as coating binders. The wet state of model coating dispersions, the surfaces of consolidated model coatings, and their internal structure were examined by both electron and atomic force microscopy, and their micrographs were found to be consistent with our immobilization and consolidation models.

The mottling in coated paper is one of the most difficult problems to solve in the area of offset printing. The prevention of mottling requires optimization of coating color formation, especially the minimum of binder migration. In this paper, we studied a mottling. Kaolin clay and CaCO3 as pigment, starch and latex as binder of coating color were used in this study. We have measured surface property of 24 coated samples through k value, mottle value and transferred ink. In the equation of Walker and Fesko, the value of k was the highest and that of mottle and the mount of transferred ink were the lowest in kaolin 60 part. And it is more easy to analyze the various surface of coated paper when sample was exposed on IR.

The aim of this research was to evaluate the influences of coating components and structures on ink absorbency. The ink absorbency was measured as porosity, K&N ink absorption, gloss and ink set-off. In order to obtain the relationship between the coating structure and the ink absorbency, the binder level was adjusted and two types of pigments were examined. One of the pigments was known to make the porous coating structure and the other one had strong ink affinity. The effects of coating components were studied by applying six different types of latex and various additives . In this research, CLC(cylindrical laboratory coater) and Prufbau printability tester were used. It was found that the decreasing latex dosage and introducing porous pigment were effective solutions to increase ink absorbency. However, the ink absorbency could not be improved by applying the fine pigment even though it had strong ink affinity. Among the characters of the latex, particle size and surface tension were found to have the strong effect on ink absorbency. The ink absorbency increased with large particle size and low surface tension latex. The additives were varied and it was found that applying to the top coating was effective.

This paper was made to evaluate the effect of the type of latex for coating on the printability by investigating the structure of pore such as the pore fraction, the number of pores, pore size and distribution of coated paper. The coated structure is mainly depend on the results of interaction between pigment and binder. It means that the structure of pore formed is chiefly affected by the type of latex. This physical properties of pore have a close relation with ink set-off associated with the drying rate, the speed of penetration of ink into base paper and printing gloss. Therefore it was necessary to find out the relationship between pore structure and the performance of printability by modifying the type of latex to vary the pore structure of coated paper. Acrylic latex was superior to S/B latex in the sedimentation volume, compressibility, smoothness, pore fraction and its number, the weight of transferred ink onto the coated paper and ink repellance. In contrast, water retention and ink setting were not good. in the comparison of anionic and amphoteric latex, amphoteric latex showed better performance in the thickness, smoothness, pore fraction and its number, pore size, the weight of ink transmitted and K&N ink receptivity, etc.

To characterize the coating structure, diverse methods such as mercury intrusion, nitrogen adsorption and oil absorption methods have been developed and widely employed. These indirect techniques, however, have some limitation to explain the actual coating structure. Recently microscopic observation methods have been tried for analyzing structural characteristics of coating layers. Preparation of the undamaged cross section of a coating layer is essential for obtaining high quality image for analysis. In this study, distortion-free cross-section of the coating layer was prepared using a grinding and polishing technique. The coated paper was embedded in epoxy resin and cured. After curing the resin block it was ground with abrasive papers and then polished with diamond particle suspension and nylon cloth. Polished coating layer was sufficient enough to obtain undamaged cross sectional images with scanning electron microscope under backscattered electron image mode. In addition, the SEM images allowed distinction of the coating layer components. Also S/B latex film formed between pigment particles was visualized by osmium tetroxide staining. Pore size distribution and pore orientation were evaluated by image analysis from SEM cross-sectional images.
