  • Hepatic coccidiosis was occurred in a rabbit farm in Chonbuk province. Clinically, rabbits showed anorexia, diarrhea, dehydration, and depression, subsequently died 3 - 5 days after onset of clinical signs. Grossly, multifocal white spots or lines on the liver suface were observed. Histopathologic lesions included hyperplasia of bile duct epithelium with infiltration of inflammatory cells such as plasma cells and granulocytes, which represents chronic pericholangitis. Different developmental stages of Eimeria stiedae were observed inside the epithelium of biliary system. This is the case of hepatic coccidiosis in rabbits.

  • Gall duct cannulated rats were given daphnetin, umbelliferone, 4-hydroxy-coumarin, dicoumarol, 4,7-dihydroxycoumarin, 4,7-dimethyl-5-hydroxy-coumarin, coumarin-3-carboxylic acid, cinnamic acid, ferulic acid, caffeic acid by duodenal catheter at room temperature and output of bile flow was detected. All of the subjected compounds in this experiment indicated a significant effect on the biliary elimination except cinnamic acid alone. It is suggested that a relationship exists between chemical pattern and biological activity for coumarin derivatives and their precursors, and that the choleretic activity of these compounds requires hydroxylated cinnamic acid structure as the most fundamental chemical pattern.

  • Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) has been known commonly improving hyperbilirubinemia and excretion abnormality of bromsulphalein, which are appeared in the liver, and reducing the release of cholesterol from bile duct. In our study, UDCA was aimed to know if the agent can inhibit the pathogenesis of AD by suppressing the microglial activation when stimulated particularly by A${\beta}$ peptide, which is known a major cause of AD. • However, technical advances in ultrasono imaging have had a remarkable impact on the study of biliary system oral cholecystography is a contrast of the gallbladder which is very frequently performed even with the application of Extra Shock Wave Lithotripsy(ESWL) in clinical use. Oral GB requires a stringent preparation if it is to be fully successful and a considerable amount of time to complete all its procedures and its objects of the radiographs. 1) to obtain a firm diagnosis of the presence of gallstones. 2) to essess function of the gallbladder that is, its ability to concentrate and store bile. After a times sequence of X-ray exposures taken in various positions to show the gallbladder to be satisfactorily filled, the patient is given a fatty meal, for instances two eggs or a cup of milk. The gallbladder which is drained by the cystic duct stores and concentrates the bile and is stimulated to contrast and excrete the bile by hormone "cholecystokinin" secreted in the intestinal mucosa. To evaluate the effect of the fatty meal which caused the gallbladder to constrict and empty, and by so doing the contrast medium passes through the cystic and bile ducts which are shown in radiographs exposed from 15-30 minutes after the variety practice of fattymeal, such as soft-boiled 2 eggs, raw 2 eggs, 100g of peanuts, and 200ml of milk. If the concentration of the opaque medium in the gallbladder is adequate, then not only the size, shape and position of the gallbladder will be shown from firms taken at intervals, the rate of concentration of the opaque medium and of the emptying of gallbladder has been measured and analyzed.

  • This study was done to find the method of the extermination of Fasciola hepatica matacercariae. And the artificial infection was carried out with 30 metacercarae exposed to 5% ammonia water and not-exposed to 5% ammonia water. Serial determinations of live weight, red blood cell, hemoglobin, packed cell volume, and eosinophils were performed in rats at 7 days interval for 16 weeks after infection (WAI). Recovery of worm burden and microscopic findings of livr was performed in rats at 10 WAI. The results in this work were summarized as follows; 1. Fasciola spp metacercariae exposed to 5% ammonia water have lost their ability of infection. 2. In teh exposed group, the mean of worm recovered was 2.25 and the common bile duct was swelling up to 0.71cm in diameter. 3. The value of live weight was different in two groups as the not-exposed group and the exposed group were 321.28, 384.38 at 10 WAI, respectively. 4. In the not-exposed group, at 7 WAI, hemoglobin at 5 WAI and packed cell volume at 7 WAI wre minimally decreased to $5.84{\times}10^{-6}/mm^3$, 11.53g/dl and 43.2%, respectively. But those three values were slowly increased at 10 WAI. Rercent cosinophil was increased to 12.2% at 4 WAI and slightly decreased to 7.9% at 10 WAI. But there are no stastistical singnificance between the exposed group and the normal control group. 5. In histolgical findings in the not-exposed group, the dilated common bile ducts and intrahepatic bile ducts showed distinct hyperplasia of the epithelium. Lymphocytes and eosinophils were infilterated around the bile ducts. The hepatic cells and Kupffer cells showed swollen appearance.

  • We performed bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) staining to observe the proliferation pattern of epithelial cells on the biliaJy mucosa in Clonorchis sinensis infection. Albino rats were infected with 100 metacercariae each and their livers were processed for histopathological observation after BrdU injection. Five to six sites in the liver of a rat were selected for paraffin section, and stained immunohistochemically to visualize BrdU incorporating cells. The flukes were mainly in the common bile duct and right or left hepatic bile ducts. The proportion of stained epithelial cells in the infected bile ducts where the worms were found on the section was 2.9-10.2% at 1 week after infection. 7.3-12.8% at 2 weeks, 7.3-13.4% at 5 weeks, and 8.4-14.8% at 15 weeks while in the non-infected ducts o to 2.7% cells were stained. The stained cells were mainly at the base of the mucosal layer. It is suggested that mucosal epithelial cells of the bile ducts infected with C. sinensis become hyperplastic mainly by direct and local stimulation of the worms.

  • Background: The proportion of aged Thais (${\geq}65$ years old) is expected to be 30% by 2030, leading to an increased number of elderly cancer cases. Older individuals have distinct patterns of cancer and treatment needs. We therefore conducted the present study of new cancer cases and trends to get a perspective on the elderly cancer situation in Northeast Thailand. Materials and Methods: All new elderly cancer cases (${\geq}65$ years) registered in the hospital-based cancer registry at the Faculty of Medicine, Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University during 1993-2012 were included in the study. Results: Elderly patients accounted for 31.6% of all cancer patients and new cancer cases in the older age group increased 46% from the first to second decades. The absolute number of oldest old (80+ years) doubled. The top three cancers in males were liver and bile duct, lung, and colorectal. In females, the three most common cancers were liver and bile duct, oral cavity, and cervix. Cancers with the highest percentages of increase were thyroid, prostate, and colorectal. Conclusions: Elderly cancer cases are increasing. Treatment modalities and palliative care for older populations are urgently needed.

  • A choledochocele is an expanded sac of the duodenal side of the distal common bile duct (CBD), and is categorized as a type III choledochal cyst. Unlike other choledochal cysts, it can be easily overlooked because of its very low prevalence, non-specific clinical symptoms, and lack of distinctive radiological findings. However, a patient having a repeated pancreaticobiliary disorder with an unknown origin, frequent abdominal pain after cholecystectomy, or repeated non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms can be suspected as having a choledochocele, and a more accurate diagnosis can be achieved via endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasound. Because it rarely becomes malignant, a choledochocele can be treated via endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) and surgical treatment. The authors were able to diagnose choledochocele accompanied by a stone in a patient admitted to the authors' hospital due to cholangitis and pancreatitis. The patient's condition was suspected to have been caused by a distal CBD stone detected via multiple detector computed tomography and ERCP, and was successfully treated via EST.

  • Lactobacillus (LAB) have been reported to exert both harmful and beneficial effects on human and animal health. Recently, it has been reported that dysbiosis and bacterial translocation contribute to liver fibrosis. However, the role of Gram-positive LAB in the situation of chronic liver diseases has not been yet elucidated. Liver injury was induced by bile duct ligation (BDL) in LAB or control-administered mice. Liver fibrosis was enhanced in LAB-administered mice compared with control-treated mice as demonstrated by quantification of Sirius-red positive area, hydroxyproline contents and fibrosis-related genes ($Col1{\alpha}1$, Acta2, Timp1, Tgfb1). Moreover, LAB-administered mice were more susceptible to BDL-induced liver injury as shown by increased ALT and AST level of LAB group compared with control group at 5 days post BDL. Consistent with serum level, inflammatory cytokines ($TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-6 and $IL-1{\beta}$) were also significantly increased in LAB-treated mice. Of note, LAB-treated liver showed increased lipoteichoic acid (LTA) expression compared with control-treated liver, indicating that LAB-derived LTA may translocate from intestine to liver via portal vein. Indeed, responsible receptor or inflammatory factor (PAFR and iNOS) for LTA were upregulated in LAB-administered group. The present findings demonstrate that administration of LAB increases LTA translocation to liver and induces profibrogenic inflammatory milieu, leading to aggravation of liver fibrosis. The current study provides new cautious information of LAB for liver fibrosis patients to prevent the detrimental effect of LAB supplements.
