  • In this paper, we describe a novel method to generate an intermediate scene using BDM (Bidirectional Disparity Morphing) from the parallel stereopair. Because an image is composed of several layers and each layer has a similar disparity, it is available to use the block based disparity estimation. In order to prevent the false correspondence, however, we closely investigate the corresponding block as we adaptively vary the block size according to the estimation error. Therefore, we can detect the occlusion because of larger estimation error of the occluded region. We define three occluding patterns, which ate derived from the peculiar property of the disparity map, in order to smooth the computed disparity map. The filtered disparity map using these patterns presents that the false disparities ate well corrected and the boundary between foreground and background becomes sharper. As a result, we can improve the quality of the intermediate scenes.

  • In this paper, we describe an algorithm to automatically generate an intermediate scene using the bidirectional disparity morphing from the parallel stereopair. To compute the disparity between two reference images, we use the 2-step fast block matching algorithm that restricts the searching range and accelerates the speed of the computation of the disparity. We also define three occluding patterns so as to smooth the computed disparities, especially for occluded regions. They are derived from the peculiar properties of the disparity map. The smoothed disparity maps present that the false disparities are well corrected and the boundary between foreground and background becomes sharper. We discuss the advantages of this algorithm compared to the commonly used schemes and we show some experimental results with real data.

  • This paper proposes a new algorithm that generates smooth and realistic transition views from one viewpoint to another view point on the panorama based navigation system. The proposed algorithm is composed with two steps. One is prewarping that aligns the viewing direction in two panorama image, the other is bidirectional disparity morphing (BDM) that generates the intermediate scene from the aligned panorama images. For the prewarping, first of all, we compute the phase correlation between two images in order to get the information such as the displacement, rotation, and scale. Then we align the original images using these information. As soon as finishing the prewarping, we compute the block based disparity vectors (DVs) and smooth them using the two occluding patterns. As we apply these DVs to the BDM, we can get the elaborate intermediate scenes. We make an experiment on the proposed algorithm with real panoramic images and we can get the satisfactory results.
