Experimental Planning for Realistic Force Feedback in a Bicycle Simulator

  • This paper presents the key idea of handlebar reaction force and pedal resistance force generation in creating life-like feeling in KAIST bicycle simulator. Also, it provides methods to evaluate its reality level with given reaction force profile. In KAIST bicycle simulator, the pedal resistance force and the handlebar reaction force are calculated using the bicycle dynamic model. With the information handlebar angle, rider´s pedaling torque and road profile transmitted from the handlebar system, the pedal system and the visual part, the bicycle dynamics engine calculates the handlebar reaction force and the pedal velocity. Structural and Fatigue Analysis on Bicycle Pedal (자전거 페달에 대한 구조 및 피로 해석)

  • This study investigates structural and fatigue analyses at bicycle pedal. Maximum deformation at model 1 is 2 times as much as model 2 at static analysis. Models 1 and 2 have the possibility of the weakest strength at the part of contact with chain gear. Among the cases of nonuniform fatigue loads at Models 1 and 2, 'SAE bracket history' with the severest change of load becomes most unstable but 'Sample history' becomes most stable. In case of 'Sample history' with the average stress of 0 to $-10^4$ MPa and the amplitude stress of 0 to $10^4$ MPa, the possibility of maximum damage becomes 4%. This stress state can be shown with 5 to 7 times more than the damage possibility of 'SAE bracket history' or 'SAE transmission'. The analysis result of this study can be effectively utilized with the safe design of pedal.

Analysis of Respiratory Gas by Training on Healthcare Indoor Bicycle (헬스케어용 실내 자전거 운동에 의한 호흡가스 분석)

  • This study was conducted to observe the change of limbs stroke and respiration gas parameters in our new bicycle fitness system. We hypothesized that the variable force of left and right limbs might be effective for sensing stimulation in modified new unequal pedal bicycle system. It has been developed, which can provide visual information and different length of pedal with left and right limbs. Experimental results showed different activities between the left and right limbs where the activity of the left limb increased than that of right limb. Especially, the soleous muscle activity increased both in control and experimental groups by this training method. But oxygen and carbon dioxide partial pressures in respiratory gas increased during training method. These results suggest that acidosis of blood was led by this process. Consequently, this bicycle training is concluded that aerobic training could affect different limb activities. Finally, we expect that our new bicycle system will be effective for healthcare with proper balance between the left and right limbs.

Development of bicycle device to strengthen safety (안전 강화를 위한 자전거 장치 개발)

  • With the growing number of people using bicycle, the number of bicycle accidents also has been increasing. It is said that bicycle accident can be reduced up to 11%~44% when riding a bicycle if LED light is used. The headlight of the bicycle makes exposure effect to the opposite side of bike rider while taillight makes exposure effect to the rear bike rider for improving safety. Bicycle safety device capable of displaying a change of direction by LED is implemented in this study in response to control button signal. This signal makes LED light which is installed in pedal and wheel of bicycle as a module type emitting or flickering during the fixed hour. Bicycle auxiliary device in pedal which is able to improve safety using LED when bikers are riding a bike at night is developed in this study. Bicycle safety device applying wireless communication technology will be expected alternative technology in the future to solve a social problem such as energy, environment, and safety.

The Development of the Automatic Transmission for Bicycle Using Internally Geared Hub (내장기어허브를 이용한 자전거 자동변속장치의 개발)

  • In this study, an automatic transmission was developed for a bicycle. This transmission uses the pedal rpm and riding speed information for efficient riding. This transmission was installed on a bicycle using an internally geared hub. The automatic transmission was developed for a beginner to ride with proper gear changes. Indoor ride tests were performed to assess the performance of this transmission. Here, a 'beginner' is defined as a bicycle rider who can maintain a riding power of ~150W with a maximum heart rate of ~80%. Furthermore, 'ride with proper gear change' means that the rider could ride the bicycle while maintaining an efficient pedal rpm by the automatic transmission. One expert and four beginners participated in the ride test. The expert was chosen for the comparison with the beginners. To minimize environmental disturbances, the ride test was performed indoors. In this test, two types of gear changes manual and automatic were tested on two types of roads a road with a gradual incline of 0-3% and a road that simulates the bicycle road along the Han river in Seoul. The results of the ride tests show that the algorithm applied for the automatic transmission helps beginners to ride the bicycle efficiently.

  • This paper presents the visualization method of the KAIST interactive bicycle simulator. The simulator consists of two bicycles of 6 DOF and 4 DOF platforms, force feedback handlebars and pedal resistance systems to generate motion feelings; a real-time visual simulator, a HMD and a beam projection system; and a 3D sound system. The system has an integrating control network with the server-client network structure for multiple simulators. The visual simulator generates dynamic images in real-time while communicating with other modules of the simulator. The operator of the simulator can have realistic visual experience of riding on a velodrome or through the KAIST campus, while being able to watch the other bicycle with an avatar.

Development of an Urban Folding Bike for Public Transportation (대중교통 연계를 고려한 도심형 접이식 자전거 개발)

  • The bicycle is one of the most important eco-friendly transport methods which can mitigate global warming. The portability of a bike on public transportation systems is essential for the wide spread use of bicycles by people in urban environments. In this study, a lightweight urban folding bike was developed with careful consideration of the association with public transport. A folding frame using a moving slide link mechanism made from AL6061 is proposed. Numerical analysis was conducted to evaluate structural safety of the bike in both vertical and pedal loading tests. The proposed urban folding bicycle weights only 10kg and summation of its width, length, and height in the folded configuration is under 158cm.

  • In this paper, a novel torque control scheme is proposed and implemented to handle the torque level of ebike precisely. By adopting moving average filters to eliminate throttle noise, ebike driver could control throttle level on wide span of 256 steps. Designed controller is plugged into ebike and tested to demonstrate it's linear control incomparable to conventional cadence sensing controller.
