  • The main goal of this work is to develop a numerical simulator to study an isothermal single-phase two-component flow in a naturally fractured oil reservoir, taking into account advection and diffusion effects. We use the Peng-Robinson equation of state with a volume translation to evaluate the properties of the components, and the discretization of the governing partial differential equations is carried out using the Finite Difference Method, along with implicit and first-order upwind schemes. This process leads to a coupled non-linear algebraic system for the unknowns pressure and molar fractions. After a linearization and the use of an operator splitting, the Conjugate Gradient and Bi-conjugated Gradient Stabilized methods are then used to solve two algebraic subsystems, one for the pressure and another for the molar fraction. We studied the effects of fractures in both the flow field and mass transport, as well as in computing time, and the results show that the fractures affect, as expected, the flow creating a thin preferential path for the mass transport.

  • Specification selection, Layout, specifications and combinations of Power Drives, and Ship motions were studied for FGPP(Floating Gas-fired Power Plants), which are still needed in areas such as the Caribbean, Latin America, and Southeast Asia where electricity is not sufficiently supplied. From this study, the optimal equipment layout in ships was derived. In addition, the difference between engine and turbine was verified through LCOE(Levelized Cost of Energy) comparison according to the type and combination of Power Drives. Analysis of Hs(Significant Height of wave) and Tp(spectrum Peak Period of wave) for places where this FGPP will be tested or applied enables design according to wave characteristics in Brazil and Indonesia. Normalized Sloshing Pressures of FGPP and LNG Carrier are verified using a sloshing analysis program, which is CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) software developed by ABS(American Bureau of Shipping). Power Transmission System is studied with Double bus with one Circuit Breaker Topology. A nd the CFD analysis allowed us to calculate linear roll damping coefficients for more accurate full load conditions and ballast conditions. Through RAO(Response Amplitude Operator) analysis, we secured data that could minimize the movement of ships according to the direction of waves and ship placement by identifying the characteristics of large movements in the beam sea conditions. The FGPP has been granted an AIP(Approval in Principle) from a classification society, the ABS.

  • In order to evaluate the earthquake safety of equipment in structures, it is essential to analyze the In-Structure Response Spectrum (ISRS). The ISRS has a peak value at the frequency corresponding to the structural vibration mode, but the frequency and amplitude at the peak can vary because of many uncertain parameters. There are several seismic design criteria for ISRS peak-broadening for fixed base structures. However, there are no suggested criteria for constructing the design ISRS of seismically isolated structures. The ISRS of isolated structures may change due to the major uncertainty parameter of the isolator, which is the shear stiffness of the isolator and the several uncertainty parameters caused by the nonlinear behavior of isolators. This study evaluated the effects on the ISRS due to the initial stiffness of the bi-linear curve of isolators and the variation of effective stiffness by the input ground motion intensity and intense motion duration. Analyzing a simplified structural model for isolated base structure confirmed that the ISRS at the frequency of structural mode was amplified and shifted. It was found that the uncertainty of the initial stiffness of isolators significantly affects the shape of ISRS. The variation caused by the intensity and duration of input ground motions was also evaluated. These results suggested several considerations for generating ISRS for seismically isolated structures.

  • The standard penetration test (SPT) obtaining the N value of the number of blows has been widely used in various subsurface conditions, including in weathered soil and rock on fresh bedrock, in geotechnical studies pertaining to the design of foundations and earth structures. This study examined the applicability of SPTs terminated conventionally after 50 blows for a penetration of less than 30 cm, particularly in weathered strata, at four sites in Korea. The N values obtained during practical SPTs are typically extrapolated linearly at 30 cm penetration, despite the possibility of a nonlinear relationship between blow counts and penetration. Such nonlinearity in weathered strata has been verified by performing special SPTs ensuring 30 cm penetration. To quantify the nonlinearity in dense strata, we conducted statistical regression analyses comparing the differences (DN) between the N values measured by the special SPTs and those extrapolated using the practical approach with the differences (DP) between the 30 cm penetration and the penetration during 50 blows. Bi-linear relationship models between DN and DP were subsequently proposed for determining the N values at 30 cm penetration in weathered strata. The N values reflecting nonlinearity could be determined from the linearly extrapolated N values by adding a modeled DN value.

  • In the current research, the nonlinear free vibrations of curved pipes made of functionally graded (FG) carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) materials are investigated. It is assumed that the FG-CNTRC curved pipe is supported on a three-parameter nonlinear elastic foundation and is subjected to a uniform temperature rise. Properties of the curved nanocomposite pipe are distributed across the radius of the pipe and are given by means of a refined rule of mixtures approach. It is also assumed that all thermomechanical properties of the nanocomposite pipe are temperature-dependent. The governing equations of the curved pipe are obtained using a higher order shear deformation theory, where the traction free boundary conditions are satisfied on the top and bottom surfaces of the pipe. The von Kármán type of geometrical non-linearity is included into the formulation to consider the large deflection in the curved nanocomposite pipe. For the case of nanocomposite curved pipes which are simply supported in flexure and axially immovable, the motion equations are solved using the two-step perturbation technique. The closed-form expressions are provided to obtain the small- and large-amplitude frequencies of FG-CNTRC curved pipes rested on a nonlinear elastic foundation in thermal environment. Numerical results are given to explore the effects of CNT distribution pattern, the CNT volume fraction, thermal environment, nonlinear foundation stiffness, and geometrical parameters on the fundamental linear and nonlinear frequencies of the curved nanocomposite pipe.

  • This study investigates the effect of bolt preloading on the rotational stiffness of stainless steel end-plate connections. An experimental programme incorporating 11 full-scale joint specimens are carried out comparing the behaviours of fully pre-tensioned (PT) and snug-tightened (ST) flush/extended end-plate connections, made of austenitic or lean duplex stainless steels. It is observed from the tests that the presence of bolt preloading leads to a significant increase in the rotational stiffness. A parallel finite element analysis (FEA) validated against the test results demonstrates that the geometric imperfection of end-plate has a strong influence on the moment-rotation response of preloaded end-plate connections, which is crucial to explain the observed "two-stage" behaviour of these connections. Based on the data obtained from the tests and FE parametric study, the performance of the Eurocode 3 predictive model is evaluated, which exhibits a significant deviation in predicting the rotational stiffness of stainless steel end-plate connections. A modified bi-linear model, which incorporates three key properties, is therefore proposed to enable a better prediction. Finally, the effect of bolt preloading is demonstrated at the system (structure) level considering the serviceability of semi-continuous stainless steel beams with end-plate connections.

  • Purpose: The purpose of study was to investigate the correlationship between lip canting change and occlusal canting change after bimaxillary orthognathic surgery, and the ratio of lip canting change and occlusal canting change after the surgery. Patients and methods: The subjects for this study was obtained from a group of 25 patients who took bimaxillary orthognathic surgery for occlusal canting correction at the Department of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, Korea between January 2000 and December 2005 and a patient's chart had to contain a resting frontal facial photograph in natural head position and a corresponding PA cephalogram in occlusion on the same day before the surgery and post-op 6 months later. The lip canting change was assessed with the angle each labial commissure and the bipupilary reference line. And, the occlusal caning change in the frontal plane was assessed with the angle between the each maxillary first molar occulasal surface and the bi-frontozygomatic suture reference line. Results: In angular measurement, average occlusal canting change was $3.09^{\circ}$ and standard deviation was $1.05^{\circ}$, average lip canting change was $1.56^{\circ}$ and standard deviation was $1.05^{\circ}$. In linear measurement, average occlusal canting change was 2.41mm and standard deviation was 2.75mm, average lip canting change was 1.18mm and standard deviation was 0.43mm. Lip canting correction ration to occlusal canting correction was 51.5(${\pm}8.4$)% in angular measurement and 48.8(${\pm}9.1$)% in linear measurement. Under Pearson's correlation analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient was 0.869 in angular measurement and 0.887 in linear measurement(p-value < 0.01). High correlationship was shown between occlusal canting change and lip canting change. Conclusion: First, Bimaxillary orthognathic surgery can correct lip canting as well as occlusal canting. Second, The average amount of lip canting correction is $51.5{\pm}8.4%,\;48.8{\pm}9.1%$ of occlusal canting correction in the study.

  • In this paper, a multi polarization reconfigurable microstrip antenna that can be used selectively for four polarizations(vertical polarization, horizontal polarization, right hand circular polarization, left hand circular polarization) at the S-band is presented. The proposed antenna consists of four PIN diodes and a microstrip patch with a cross slot and a circular slot and is fed by utiliting electromagnetic coupling between the microstrip patch and the feed line. The proposed antenna has a DC bias network to supply DC voltage to each PIN diode and the polarization can be determined by controlling the ON /OFF states of four PIN diodes. The fabricated antenna has a VSWR below 2 in the vertical polarization(3.17~3.21 GHz), the horizontal polarization(3.16~3.20 GHz), the left hand circular polarization (3.08~3.19 GHz), and the right hand circular polarization(3.10~3.2 GHz) frequency bands. The designed antenna has the cross polarization level higher than 20 dB, a gain over 5 dBi for the linear polarization states, and 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth wider than 50 MHz in the circular polarization states.

  • Prompt gamma ray from the natural Indium sample was measured by using an assembly of BGO($Bi_4Ge_3O_{12}$) scintillation detectors in the neutron energy region from 1 to 300 eV. The assembly was composed of pieces of BGO. The spectrometer was composed geometrically as total energy absorption detector. 46-MeV electron linear accelerator which is located at Research Reactor Institute, Kyoto University used for neutron sources from photonuclear reaction. The measurement of the neutron capture resonances was performed to below neutron energy 1 keV, because of strong X-ray effect from photonuclear reaction in Ta target and short distance from the target to an assembly of detector. The distance of neutron flight path is $12.7{\pm}0.02m$. The large neutron capture resonances were measured from 1 to 400 eV. The energy in the capture resonance was compared with the evaluated values. The large resonances were seen in the present measurement. General agreement can be seen between the present measurement and the previous evaluated data in relevant energy region. In the present study, we measured the continues resonance structure above 1 keV neutron energy region. 91.49 eV new neutron capture resonance was found in present measurement.
