Through the series of study on the above subjects, the following were founded. 1. Soluble silica in paddy top-soil (xppm) and maxium possible yield (y) is expressed as following equatic $y=63.97+0.425x-0.00114x^2$ It is known that soluble silica in paddy top-soil in South Korea is limited as 130ppm. 2. Gnder the present Korean condition 90% of paddy-top-soil is estimated to be short in available silica content and the country average to only 78ppm. 3. The total area of Korean paddy-top-soil is about 1,036,710 ha. All requirements of wollastonite in South Korea estimated from the equation $Y=0.94-0.033{\times}$are about 2 million M/T 4. Silicates fertilizer minerals are Bentonite, Zeolite, Wollastonite, Serpentine, and Chlorite. But Wollastonite is most economic and can be supplied to using Korea. 5. Wollastonite is formed in contact metomorphic deposits. Limestone is the country rock of wollastonite. Limestone in Korea is in Ryunchcon system, (Pre-cambrian) Okcheon system, (unknown), Great limestone series (paleozoic), Hongjum series (Paleozoic) and Kyungsang system (mesozoic) so that the zones of these limestone and igneous rock are the possible area which wollastonite can be produced. 6. According to the published geologic map (scale 1/5000), about 25 provinces will be possible area which wollastonite can be produced. In future, I believe that many possible area will be increased. 7. According to this survey at Danyang, total wollastonite resources are about 179,000 M/T and average of soluble $SiO_2$ is 29.84%. 8. According to this survey at Daijeon, total resources are about 57,600 M/T and average of soluble $SiO_2$ is 21.53%. 9. Total wollastonite resources including Danyang, Yangduk, and Daijeon are about 1,172,200 M/T. Considering possible resources, it will be over 20 million M/T and I can say that it is possible to be supply for a score.
Recycling of aluminum dross is a significant issue in domestic aluminum industry. In this study, formed ceramic materials were prepared using aluminum dross mixed with feldspar powders to investigate its application as industrial materials and utilization of aluminum dross. In the prepared sample, feldspar was melted at the sintered temperature, and its phase was trans-formed into amorphous, and spinel ($MgA1_2$$O_4$) phase in the dross was remained clearly. Density of the test specimen Increased from 0.91 to 0.65 gr/㎤ and water absorbance decreased from 2.5 to 1.7f% with increasing of sintered time at the sintered temperature $1220^{\circ}C$ with composition of feldspar 55 wt%, dross 40wt% and bentonite 5 wt%. At the same experimental conditions, bending strength of the test specimen was 10.8 MPa, and heat conductivity was 0.34 W/m.K with sintered time 30 minutes.
In this paper, the characteristics of the flow and the movement of the floc were analyzed through the experiments in the sedimentation basin using the redioisotope. Tc-99m radioisotope was used for the experiments for the characteristics of the flow, and the bentonite absorbing Tc-99m radioisotope was used in the experiments for the movement of the floc. Through the experiments of the flow, it was found that the velocities of flow in the sedimentation basin were different depending upon the position and the depth. The distance of the moving trajectories of the floc is increased by increasing the discharge. By increasing the discharge, the settling point is farther from the inlet, and the turbidity removal efficiencies in the sedimentation basin are decreased. The moving velocities of the floc and the density are changed in the different depths in the sedimentation basin.

A chemical and biological permeable barrier with economic feasibility is suggested to treat landfill leachate in this study. The proposed composite layers consist of bentonite, and polyurethane (PU) foam that is mixed with powdered activated carbon (PAC) and inoculated with microorganisms from local wastewater treatment plant. Each layer is mixed with local sand, and yellow brown soil. Batch tests were conducted to investigate the sorptions of nitrate on the PU foam and PAC, and nitrification/denitrification rate of each layer material. Nitrification occurred in 30 minutes with initial ammonia concentration of 100 mg/L, and the concentration of nitrate attached in the PU foam increased after 270 minutes. Results of denitrification batch tests showed 76.6%, 87.3% and 88% of nitrate removal efficiency at 10%, 20% and 30% of the volume ratio of PU foam, respectively. The pH increased from 7 to 9.42, and alkalinity increased from 980 mg/L to 1720 mg/L during the denitrification batch tests. In the column experiments using the proposed composite layers with 20% of the volume ratio of the PU foam, about 96% of BOD, 63% of COD, 58.1~79.5% of total nitrogen were removed.
This study is to estimate the uniaxal compressive strength (UCS) for the weak rocks using needle penetrometer test. The appropriate ratio of the artificial rocks for this test was cement (C):bentonite (B):water (W) = 1.3:0.7:2.3 or 1.5:0.5:2.0. From the relationship between needle penetration resistance (NPR) measured by needle penetrometer test and an estimated UCS, NPR and UCS tended to increase with increasing the curing period. Also from the relationship between the measured NPR and the measured UCS, NPR-UCS was linearly increased with the curing periods of 3-day to 14-day regardless of the ratio, then in the curing periods of 14-day to 28-day it was nearly constant. In conclusion, the overall relationship between NPR and UCS shows a linear relation for the most part, it means that UCS is possible to be estimated from NPR by needle penetrometer test in the case of weak rocks.

We used polymers of alternating cationic and anionic nature to build up shells on fiber surfaces, strengthen the worn-out fibers and improve paper properties made from such fibers. OCC and ONP pulps were either dipped or salted out in the cationic polyallylamine, polyacrylamide and starch solutions. After centrifugal drying, these were followed by treatments in anionic polyacrylic acid, poly-acrylamide, and starch solutions, respectively. The shell-enhanced fibers were formed into handsheets and their physical properties evaluated. The results show that building multiple shells on worn-out fiber surfaces can strengthen the fibers and paper. The simpler and more practical impregnation-centrifuging treatment provided the desired effects, whereas salting out the polymers produced somewhat superior fibers. The latter process, were impractical, however. The first pair of polymeric shells imparted marked strength improvement, whereas later layers had diminishing efficacies. Overall, the methods can improve fiber quality, attaining paper strength requirements without resorting to expensive measures. Alternate cationic polymer and filler powders were also deposited on fiber surface based on the micriparticle system in an anticipation of stiffness gains. Platy minerals, such as montmorillonite, bentonite, sericite, clay and talc were added following cationic PAM. After dewatering of polymer-pigment shelled fiber of one to 3 pairs of layers, handsheets either calendered or uncalendered were evaluated. The results indicate that regardless of calendaring, stiffness of the handsheets did not improve appreciably while certain other strength properties showed gains. We also attempted the novel starch gel filler addition method wherein tapioca starch and filers (PCC, sericite or clay) were mixed at high solids content of 50% and cooked until gelatinized. The filled handsheets were dried under various conditions and then tested for their properties. Improvements in strengths of modified filled paper were observed.

In a previous study, the feasibility of four materials (bentonite, steelmaking slag, lime and organic compost) to induce soil aggregate formation was assessed and the mixtures of organic compost and lime were chosen as most effective amendments in terms of cost benefit. This work is a subsequent study to evaluate the effectiveness of those amendments in reducing soil loss in $15^{\circ}$ sloped agricultural area by using rainfall simulation test. Three different soils were treated with two conditions of organic compost/lime mixtures (2% + 2%, 3% + 1%, w/w). In the amended soils, soil fertility was increased due to the increase of CEC, T-N, and T-P. During the rainfall simulation, suspended solid in run-off water from amended soil were reduced by 43% ~ 78%. When the content of organic compost was higher than that of lime, reduction of soil loss was also increased by 67% ~ 78%. Sediment discharge was also decreased by 72% ~ 96% in the amended soil. Similar to the suspended solid analysis, higher organic compost content led to more reduction of soil discharging, which implies organic compost is more effective than lime in reducing soil loss. The overall result suggests that the mixtures of organic compost and lime could be used as amendment materials to reduce soil loss in sloped farmland.
To abate the problem of odor from restaurants, a hybrid adsorbent consisting of organic and inorganic materials was developed and evaluated using acetaldehyde as a model compound was deveioped and evaluated. Powders of activated carbon, bentonite, and calcium hydroxide were mixed and calcinated to form adsorbent structure. The surface area of the hybrid adsorbent was smaller than that of high-quality activated carbon, but its microscopic image showed that contours and pores were developed on its surface. To determine its adsorption capacity, both batch isotherm and continuous flow column experiments were performed, and these results were compared with those using commercially available activated carbon. The isotherm tests showed that the hybrid adsorbent had a capacity 40 times higher than that of the activated carbon. In addition, the column experiments revealed that breakthrough time of the hybrid adsorbent was 2.5 times longer than that of the activated carbon. These experimental results were fitted to numerical simulations by using a homogeneous surface diffusion model (HSDM); the model estimated that the hybrid adsorbent might be able to remove acetaldehyde at a concentration of 40 ppm for a 5-month period. Since various odor compounds are commonly emitted as a mixture when meat is barbecued, it is necessary to conduct a series of experiments and HSDM simulations under various conditions to obtain design parameters for a full-scale device using the hybrid adsorbent.

In this study the spatial variability of soils is substantiated physically and numerically by using random field theory. Heterogeneous samples are fabricated by combining nine homogeneous soil clusters that are assumed to be elements of an adopted random field. Homogeneous soils are prepared by mixing different percentages of kaolin and bentonite at water contents equivalent to their respective liquid limits. Comprehensive characteristic laboratory tests were carried out before embarking on direct shear experiments to deduce the basic correlations and properties of nine homogeneous soil clusters that serve to reconstitute the heterogeneous samples. The tests consist of Atterberg limits, and Oedometric and unconfined compression tests. The undrained shear strength of nine soil clusters were measured by the unconfined compression test data, and then correlations were made between the water content and the strength and stiffness of soil samples with different consistency limits. The direct shear strength of heterogeneous samples of different stochastic properties was then evaluated by physical and numerical modelling using FISH code programming in finite difference software of $FLAC^{3D}$. The results of the experimental and stochastic numerical analyses were then compared. The deviation of numerical simulations from direct shear load-displacement profiles taken from different sources were discussed, potential sources of error was introduced and elaborated. This study was primarily to explain the mathematical and physical procedures of sample preparation in stochastic soil mechanics. It can be extended to different problems and applications in geotechnical engineering discipline to take in to account the variability of strength and deformation parameters.
Water content is one of the significant engineering properties of soil for predicting the behavior of soil matrix. Conventional drying oven can be widely used to obtain the values by drying the soil specimens for 16 to 24 hours at $105^{\circ}C$. Although a number of experimental data has been accumulated for the conventional method of drying soil for water contents, shortcomings of the method are still hard to overcome such as long drying time for in situ use and the difficulty of taking prompt actions against emergency cases. Recently, ASTM and JGS have established microwave oven drying techniques for obtaining water contents to cope with those problems. And the reliability evaluation study has been also performed on the microwave oven drying for water contents. Feasibility study of the microwave oven drying was performed to confirm the process of the technique with Jumunjin sand, kaolinite, bentonite, weathered granite soil, and organic soil. Investigation was also conducted on the factors affecting and enhancing the reliability of the technique.
