  • This paper presents surface matching algorithms that can be used to reconstruct the surface topography of an object scanned by an AFM. The essence of the algorithms is to match up neighboring images intentionally overlapped with others. Two performance indexes using the correlation coefficient and the sum of the squared differences are introduced. To compensate for the inaccuracy of the coarse stage implemented to AFM, all the six axes including the rotational degrees of freedom are successively matched so as to maximize the coefficients defined. The results show that the proposed algorithms are useful for measurement range extension of AFM. The results also show that a combined use of the two indexes is beneficial for practical cases.

  • Cancer-testis antigens (CTAs) are a group of tumor-associated antigens with more than 140 members whose expression has been shown to be limited to gametogenic tissues and placenta among normal tissues. However, malignant tissues of different origins have shown aberrant and elevated expression of these antigens. Such a pattern of expression endows beneficial properties for use as cancer biomarkers as well as immunotherapeutic targets as a result of the immune-privileged status of the testes. CTAs have been shown to be expressed in pediatric brain tumors, different types of sarcomas, leukemias, and lymphomas as well as neuroblastomas. Although data regarding their expression pattern in childhood tumors are not as comprehensive as for adult tumors, it is supposed that CTA-based immunotherapeutic approaches can also be used for pediatric cancers. However, there are limited data about the objective clinical responses following immunotherapy in such patients. Here we try to review the available information.

  • Particle contamination has been an ongoing problem affecting the reliability of the magnetic hard disk drives. Especially the recent use of MR head requires much tighter control of particle contamination due to thermal asperity (TA) phenomenon. In this study, the effects of slider air bearing surface design of TA reduction capability were investigated by manufacturing two types of sliders. Numerical methods were used to simulate the motion of particles in the head/media interface. Experiments were conducted to verify the results predicted by the numerical simulation. Drives were built and exposed to particle contamination using a particle injection chamber, which turned out to be a very simple and reliable particle generation method over conventional aerosol technique. Then the number of TA generated in the drives was recorded and compared. Also the contacts between slider and particles were investigated by acoustic emission study. It was found that a new ABS design, which has aerodynamic U-shaped rail and central flow passage, was beneficial in reducing the particle contamination on the slider.

  • The present review investigates the role of the cytoprotective enzyme heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in human diseases and explores strategies for its clinical use. In recent years, there has been a growing evidence, for the beneficial effects of some phytoconstituents via induction of HO-1 expression, contained in commonly used spices, fruits, and herbs, in preventing various pathologic conditions, including cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. HO-1 catalyzes the rate-limiting step in heme catabolism to generate ferrous iron, carbon monoxide, and biliverdin. HO-1 is reported to play crucial roles in cellular protection, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative and anti-apoptotic effects. These evidences indicate that HO-1 may functions as a potential therapeutic target in various human diseases. The article highlights the current status of the development of the HO-1 modulation pathway using dietary phytoconstituents.

  • In this paper, process conditions are investigated for elimination of the grain coarsening and improved material flow during forging process by both of experiments and FEM analysis. Particular interest has been given to understand role of preform shape on the grain coarsening behavior and magnitude of the hammer forging load. As the results of FEM simulation by using DEFORM-3D, the simulated forging loads were 2,200ton in the case of a machined bar which is machined from 65mm to 60mm diameter, and below 1,900ton in the case of machined preform, respectively. The use of preform has been beneficial for reduction of the forging load and elimination of the grain coarsening. However, in the case of as received bar and the round bar, which was machined to 2.5mm thickness in surface layer, some degree of local grain coarsening behavior has been observed. The optimized preform shape could be properly designed by applying the FEM simulation.

  • The word \"permaculture\" is a contraction of \"permanent agriculture\" or \"permanent culture\". Permaculture principles are designed to support (or ensure) the survival of humanity, the earth and all on it, and, to improve our standard of living, Permaculture can be defined as : a design system for creating sustainable human environments that can be (relatively) easily constructed and maintained. The principles of permaculture designs are relative location every element (such as house , rice paddy, road, esc) is placed in relation to each other such that each assists the other : each element performs multiple functions ; each function is supported by many elements : energy efficient planning ; using biological resources rather than fossil fuels : energy cycling on site (both fuel and human energy) : Using and accelerating natural plant succession to establish favourable sites and soils ; poly-culture and diversity of beneficial species for a productive, interactive system ; use of edge and natural patterns for best effect. These principles can be used for any permaculture design, in any climate, and at any scale. There has been very little scientific examination of Permaculture, and as such, it must be viewed as a design philosophy.viewed as a design philosophy.

  • Bifidobacteria have been known as beneficial inhabitant of human intestine. Therefore, bifidobacteria began to be noticed as a starter in the manufacture of fermented dairy products. Perhaps the key for effective use of bifidobacteria in commercial dairy products is the maintenance of viability of bifidobacteria during large scale preparation of starter culture and distribution of products. So we tried to obtain the bifidobacteria having suitable characteristics for using as a starter in the manufacture of fermented dairy products. Among bifidobacteria isolated from Korean, E-4 strain showed the highest resistance to oxygen. To know whether the selected strain will be fit for manufacture of fermented dairy products, we also investigated resistance of the selected strain to HCI. The selected strain, E-4, was more resistant to environmental stresses such as oxygen, H2O2 and HCI than Bifidobacterium longum known as resistant strain to environmental stresses. According to carbohydrate fermentation patterns and morphological characteristics, E-4 strain was identified as B. bifidum. In conclusion, the selected strain, E-4, was thought to be fit for manufacture of fermented dairy products.

  • In this paper, a coil spring of the suspension components of the car is calculated through FEM(Finite Element Method) when a portion of the one is applied by an external load. we analyze the situation by using 'Large Deformation Analysis SW' in the EDISON structural dynamics server. Results of the analysis are about a displacement of the upper spring after deformation and total mass, and we use them to calculate the spring constant and maximum von-Mises stress by using Hooke's law and von-Mises stress equation. Finally, we visualize the relationship between the calculated spring constant and the mass through graphs and this data are beneficial for industries related to the spring.

  • TIG welding can produce high quality of weld, but has the disadvantage of low productivity and high possibility of lack-of-fusion especially on heavy wall groove welding. In order to overcome such demerits of TIG welding, the hot-wire method which provides pre-heated wire and the use of He-Ar mixture gas as shielding gas were adopted. Through this study, both methods were turned out to be beneficial to the prevention of lack-of-fusion and the increase of productivity and welding speed.
