  • In order to analyze feasibility of replacing a conventional 6-mm Ti bar with a 5-mm bar, a series of rotating bending fatigue tests were carried out on Ti-6Al-4V bars by strengthening the fatigue performance using a special technique called UNSM (Ultrasonic Nanocrystal Surface Modification). The results of S-N curves clearly showed that the performance of the 5-mm titanium specimen was similar to that of the 6-mm specimen when the UNSM treatment was applied. The 5-mm treated specimen converged with small scattering band into the linear line of the non-treated 6-mm one. Below the fatigue life of $10^5$ cycles, the UNSM treatment did not show any significant superiority in the bending stress and fatigue life. However, over the fatigue life of $10^5$ cycles, the effect of UNSM was superior for each fatigue life, and the bending stress became longer and higher than that of the untreated one. In the case of 6-mm Ti-bar with UNSM, the fatigue limit was about 592 MPa, and there was fatigue strength increase of about 30.7% at the fatigue life of $10^4$ cycles compared to the untreated 6-mm bar. Therefore, the compressive residual stress made by the UNSM in Ti-6Al-4V increased the fatigue strength by more than 30%.

  • The vertical roller mill, which performs the grinding and partly blending of raw material, is the one of the important machine to produce ordinary portland cement. It has been reported that an unexpected fatigue failure occurred in a table liner in the course of grinding portland cement. The life of table liner is estimated to $4{\times}10^7$ cycles in the design stage, but at the field, when its operating time reaches to $2{\times}10^6{\sim}8{\times}10^6$ cycles, the fracture of table liner begins to be found. The fracture of table liner is initiated from the outside edge of grinding path contacting with the grinding roller. Its maintenance normally take 30 % of the total maintenance costs of the roller mill. Therefore, this study shows the clarification of the reasons occurring the fatal destruction of the table liner by fatigue fracture analysis utilizing fracture mechanics and by the finite element method. And, the results from Goodman diagram illustrate relationship of including information on the transition between tensile and bending fatigue strength in the fatigue characterization of table liner.

  • Fatigue strength assessment procedures have been implemented in the ship design rules by many classification societies. However, a large variation tin the details of the different approaches exists in practically all aspects influding load history assessment, stress evaluation and fatigue strength assessment. In order to assess the influences of thesd variations on the prediction of fatigue lives. a comparative study is organized by the ISSC Committee III.2 Fatigue and Fracture. A pad detail on the top of longitudinal hatch coaming of a panamax container vessel is selected for fatigue calculation. The work described in this paper is one set of results of this comparative study in which the ABS dynamics approach is applied. Through this analysis the following conclusions can be drawn. (1) With the original ABS approach, the fatigue life of this pad detail is very low, only 2.398 years. (2) The treatment of the stillwater bending moment in the ABS approach might be a source of conservatism. If the influence of stillwater bending moment is ignored, then the fatigue life for this pad detail is 7.036 years. (3) The difference between the nominal stress approach and the hot spot stress approach for this pad detail is about 26%.

  • This paper investigates the effects of shot peening on mechanical properties of SAE 9254, which is a spring steel used for the suspension system of automobiles. Rotary Bending Fatigue test is accomplished and the results are summarized as fellows : 1. The tensile strength and the hardness do not change so much. 2. The layer of highly residual stress is obtained by multi-stage shot peening. 3. The fatigue strength seems to be improved by residual stress. 4. The fatigue strength of un-peened and multistage shot peened material are 425 MPa and 756 MPa, respectively.

  • The welded specimens were made by butt welding of the 2 wires of 50mm length using the pulsed YAG laser. The laser welded wires were tested for investigating the shape memory effect and the ability of super elasticity. The fatigue properties of the welded wires were investigated using the rotary bending fatigue tester specially designed for wires. Moreover, the effect of defocusing distance during laser welding on the static and fatigue properties was Investigated. The shape memory effect and super elasticity of the laser welded wires were approximately identical with that of base metal at the test temperature below 353K. However, the welded wires were broken within elastic limit at the test temperature above 353k. Under the cyclic bending loading conditions, the welded wires could be useful only below the elastic limit, while the base metal had sufficient fatigue life even the stress induced M-phase region. The fatigue strength of the welded wires was about half of that of the base metal. The deterioration of the static and fatigue properties in the welded wires was proven to be from the large difference of the transformation behavior between the base metal and welded part that is caused by vaporization of Ni-content at the welded part during the welding process. The defocusing distance below 3mm acted more largely on lowering the strength of the welded wires than that of 6mm or 8mm.

  • P/M enables the economical production of components for many kinds of gears. Functionally, the sub gear requires high tooth accuracy and bending fatigue strength. The whole tooth profile was sized after sintering to satisfy the gear tooth accuracy specification. The part was redesigned to reduce machining requirements. The required bending fatigue strength was achieved through appropriate material choice and induction of compressive residual stress by shotpeening after carburizing. The P/M sub gear replaced a forged steel gear, satisfied performance requirements, expanded the use of P/M applications and provided over 30% cost reduction.

  • The transmission system of high speed train serve in the severe condition compared with those of other trains, namely, they have to transmit high power to run with high speed and they have to make maximum use of the limited space. To clarify the strength of gear for Korea High-Speed Train, a bending fatigue test of gear specimen is performed and compare with actual gear's. From this result, specimen test is useful to infer S-N curve and endurance limit of actual gear that much time and expense are consumed.

  • Shot peening process is most often used to improve the fatigue properties of metal parts, In order to achieve an optimum, repeatable, and reliable fatigue enhancement from the shot peening process, the important shot peening parameters must be optimized, In this paper, the optimum peening intensity(Almen intensity) condition is investigated by experiment. Rotary bending fatigue test has been adopted to investigate the effects of optimum peening on the fatigue characteristics, Experimental results show that the fatigue strength and fatigue life has been tremendously increased by optimum-peening treatment. However, the fatigue strength and fatigue life has been decreased by under or over peening.

  • The thermal fatigue behavior of alumina ceramics was investigated by water quenching method. Single-quench thermal shock tests were performed to decide the critical thermal shock temperature difference ($\Delta$Tc) which was found to be 225$^{\circ}C$ Cyclic thermal shock fatigue tests were performed at temperature diff-erences of 175$^{\circ}C$, 187$^{\circ}C$ and 200$^{\circ}C$ respectively. After cyclic thermal shock fatigue test the distributions of retained strength and crack were observed. Retained strength was measured by four point bending method and crack observation method bydye penetration. In terms of the retained strength distribution the critical number of thermal shock cycles(Nc) were 7 for $\Delta$T=200$^{\circ}C$, 35 for $\Delta$T=187$^{\circ}C$ and 180for $\Delta$T=175$^{\circ}C$ respec-tively. In terms of the crack observation the critical number of thermal shock cycles were 5 for $\Delta$T==200$^{\circ}C$ 20 for $\Delta$T==187$^{\circ}C$ and 150 for $\Delta$T=175$^{\circ}C$ respectively. The difference of Nc investigated by two different methods is due to the formation of the longitudinal cracks which had no effect on the four point bending strength. Therefore the thermal fatigue behavior of alumina ceramics could be more accurately described by the crack observation method than the retained strength measurement method.
