In the present study, external restraints imposed normal to the plate during the cooling stage were determined to be effective for reduction of the angular distortion of butt-welded or fillet-welded plate. A welding analysis model under external force during the cooling stage was idealized as a prismatic member subjected to pure bending. The external restraint was represented by vertical force on both sides of the work piece and bending stress forms in the transverse direction. The additional bending stress distribution across the plate thickness was reflected in the improved inherent strain model, and a set of inherent strain charts with different levels of bending stress were newly calculated. From an elastic linear FE analysis using the inherent strain values taken from the chart and comparing them with those from a 3D thermal elasto-plastic FE analysis, welding deformation can be calculated.
The eccentric extrusion and bending process for the forming of the curved rectangular hollow tube is newly developed. Generally the bending process of hollow tube is the secondary process followed by the extrusion process of the hollow tube from the round billet. So many defects such as wrinkling and the difference of wall thickness can be happened during the secondary bending process. In order to avoid the defects the new process named as "the eccentric extrusion and bending process" is suggested and applied to the U-bending of rectangular hollow tube. In this paper the kinematically admissible velocity field between the dies surface and the internal plug boundary surface s developed for the curving velocity. By the using of this curving velocity field the curvature of extruded products can be calculated with the parameters such as eccentricity dies length friction constant aspect ratio.
In the present research, a new bending system using a segmented vacuum chuck for Stressed Mirror Polishing (SMP) is developed. SMP is a special fabrication method for thin aspheric mirrors, where simple flat or spherical fabrication is applied while a mirror blank is deflected. Since a mirror blank is usually glued to a bending fixture in the conventional SMP process, there are drawbacks such as long curing time, inconvenience of mirror replacement, risk of mirror breakage, and stress concentration near the glued area. To resolve the drawbacks, a new bending system is designed to effectively hold a mirror blank by vacuum. For the developed bending system, the optimal bending load to achieve the designated mirror deflection is found by finite element analysis and an optimization algorithm. With the measurement results of the deflected mirror surfaces with the optimal bending loads, the feasibility of the developed bending system is investigated. As a result, it is shown that the bending system is appropriate for the SMP process.
In order to recognize the allowable bending diameter in coils, the strain as function of diameters is evaluated. The irreversible strain limits of $I_c$ in the easy and hard bending modes were measured. Strains were calculated at the coating film in the easy bending and at outer edge or inner edge in the hard bending of the CC tape, respectively. The tape geometry subjected to bending procedures is considered from the current industrial spool winding operation. Through the linear superposition of strain induced in different bending modes regarding the expressions, the appropriate design for critical bending diameter is suggested. Results proved that the existence of buckling resulting from bending in hard direction when applied strain exceeded 0.6% is possible. The depicted results showed that the strain limit as a viable parameter should be considered for future purposes.

In the previous experimental study about extru-bending of angle product, the bending of extruded angle products with the '${\wedge}$' section and 'ㄱ' section can be abtained by the hot metal extru-bending machine with the two punches moving in the different velocity. The bending curvature can be controlled by the different velocity of billets through the two-hole container. This paper describes simulation of extru-bending process by the difference of punch velocities. The result of the forming simulation by $DEFORM^{TM}-3D$ shows that the bending phenomenon at the die exit during extrusion can be abtained by the two punches moving in the different velocity. And it is possible to design extrusion dies and to control the curvature of product through the simulation of extru-bending process by analysis
Local buckling behaviors of aluminum square tube beams reinforced by aluminum plates under three point bending loads have been analyzed using experimental tests combined with theoretical and finite element analyses. For this analysis true stresses were determined from applied loads and cross-sectional area records of a tensile specimen with a rectangular cross-section by real-time photographing. True strains were also obtained from in-situ local elongation measurements of the specimen gage portion by the multi-point scanning laser extensometer. Six kinds of aluminum tube beam specimens reinforced by aluminum plates were employed for the bending test. The bending deformation behaviors up to the maximum load analyzed by the numerical simulation agreed well with experimental ones. After passing the maximum load, reinforcing plate hindering the local buckling of the tube beam was debonded from the aluminum tube beam. An aluminum tube beam strengthened by aluminum plate on the upper web showed the most excellent bending capacity, which could be explained on the basis of the neutral axis shift and the local buckling deformation range.
In this study, one side fillet welded T-joint, used in box type girder and other welding structure, was investigated by stress analysis and bending fatigue test without edge preparation, with variation of joint shape. The purpose of this study is to give the welding condiltion and design standard on manufacturing one side fillet welded T-joint. As a result, the following conclusions were obtained. 1) In one side fillet welded T-joint, the larger the leg length and the penetration depth, the greater the bending fatigue strength because reduction of stress and strain on toe and root. The increase of the longitudinal leg length rather than vertical leg length contributed to the increase in bending fatigue strength. 2) In one side fillet welded T-joint without edge preparation, both general manual welding and general automatic welding were carried out with same condition. In this case, automatic welding showed deeper penetration and more increased longitudinal leg length than manual welding, so that automatic welding offers greater bending fatigue strength. 3) For one side fillet welded T-joint without edge preparation with automatic welding, the ratio(h/t) of the leg length(h) and the main plate thickness(t) in which toe crake can occur was 1.0 over.
Most ships and offshore structures are equipped with a variety of pipes, which inevitably contain curved portions. While it has been a usual practice to conduct bending stress analyses of these curved pipes using the straight-beam theory, this paper adopts two different types of finite elements, straight-beam elements and two-dimensional shell elements, for finite element analyses of a variety of curved pipes. It then compares the analysis results for two different types of elements to determine correction factors, which can be used to transform the bending displacements and bending stresses obtained by straight-beam elements to those obtainable by two-dimensional shell elements. The paper ends with a practical suggestion on how to efficiently use these correction factors to estimate the combined axial and normal stresses in a curved portion of a pipe.
As the exploitation of oil and gas resources advances into deeper waters and harsher environments, the design and analysis of the flexible risers has become the research focus in the offshore engineering filed. Due to the complexity of the components and the sliding between the adjacent layers, the bending response of the flexible risers is highly non-linear. This paper presents the finite element analysis of the flexible risers under bending loads. The detailed finite element model of the flexible riser is established in ABAQUS software. This finite element model incorporates all the fine details of the riser to accurately predict its nonlinear structural behavior. Based on the finite element model, the bending moment-curvature relationships of a flexible riser under various axisymmetric loads have been investigated. The results have been compared with the analytical ones obtained from the literature and good agreements have been found. Moreover, the stress of the tendon armors has been studied. The non-linear relationship between the armor tendons' stress and the bending loads has been obtained.
A functional external fixator system for bone deformity near the joints using worm gear was developed for curing the angle difference in fracture bones while the lengthening bar was developed for curing the differences in length, also in fracture bones. Both experiments and FE analysis were performed to compare the elastic stiffness in several loading modes and to improve the functional external fixator system for bone deformity near joints. The FE model using compressive and bending FE analysis was applied due to the angle differentiations. The results indicate that compressive stiffness value in the experiment was 175.43N/mm, bending stiffness value in the experiment was 259.74 N/mm, compressive stiffness value in the FEA was 188.67 N/mm, and bending stiffness value in the FEA was 285.71 N/mm. Errors between experiments and FEA were less than $10\%$ in both the 'compressive stiffness and the bending stiffness. The maximum stress (157 MPa) applied to the angle of the clamp was lower than the yield stress (176.4 MPa) of SUS316L. The degree of stiffness in both axial compression and bending of the new fixator are about 2 times greater than other products, with the exception of EBI (2003).
