  • The aim of this study was to collect crucial data for the improvement of water quality and ecosystem conservation by analyzing water samples, sediments, benthic macroinvertebrates, and fish in the Seosan reservoir. The average values of water quality parameters from 2001 to 2016 were a chemical oxygen demand of 10 mg/L, total nitrogen of 1.22 mg/L, and total phosphorus of 0.074 mg/L. Cadmium was detected in the range of 0.531-0.748 mg/kg in the reservoir sediment. Fish belonging to 6 families and 9 species were identified in the reservoir. The dominant species were Carassius auratus and Micropterus salmoides. Benthic macroinvertebrates belonging to 22 families and 28 species were identified. The ecological score of the benthic macroinvertebrate community was 15 inside the reservoir (St. 2). Micropterus salmoides, an invasive alien species, was determined to be the subdominant fish species based on the number of captures, and the presence of the invasive species, Sicyos angulatus L. and Paspalum distichum L. was confirmed among the land flora.

  • Four strains of Penicillium and Talaromyces species are described and illustrated in an inventory of fungal species belonging to Eurotiales. The strains, CNUFC-DDS17-1, CNUFC-DDS27-1, CNUFC-PTM72-1, and CNUFC-YJW3-31, were isolated from soil and freshwater samples from South Korea. Based on their morphological characteristics and sequence analyses by the combined b-tubulin and calmodulin gene, the CNUFC-DDS17-1, CNUFC-DDS27-1, CNUFC-PTM72-1, and CNUFC-YJW3-31 isolates were identified as Penicillium pasqualense, Penicillium sanguifluum, Talaromyces apiculatus, and Talaromyces liani, respectively. The designated strains were found to represent a previously undescribed species of Korean fungal biota. In this study, detailed morphological descriptions and phylogenetic relationships of these species are provided.

  • In a very recent paper, Yousef et al. [Anal. Math. Phys. 11: 58 (2021)] introduced two new subclasses of analytic and bi-univalent functions and obtained the estimates on the first two Taylor-Maclaurin coefficients |a2| and |a3| for functions belonging to these classes. In this study, we introduce a general subclass 𝔅h,pΣ(λ, μ, 𝛿) of analytic and bi-univalent functions in the unit disk 𝕌, and investigate the coefficient bounds for functions belonging to this general function class. Our results improve the results of the above mentioned paper of Yousef et al.

  • The suborder Hyperiidea is an abundant crustacean zooplankton in pelagic communities with copepods and euphausiaceans. Hyperiidean amphipods are known to be commensals or parasites of gelatinous organisms such as medusae, siphonophores, ctenophores, and salps. Korean hyperiid amphipods have not received taxonomical attention since the 1970s. During a survey of pelagic crustacean species, two species of hyperiid amphipods, Phronima atlantica Guérin-Méneville, 1836 belonging to the family Phronimidae and Oxycephalus clausi Bovallius, 1887 belonging to the family Oxycephalidae, were found on Dokdo, East Sea, Korea. These two species are new to Korean waters. In the present study, we provide descriptions and illustrations of these two hyperiid species.

  • As a result of continuous taxonomic studies on the Korean crabs, Carcinus aestuarii Nardo, 1847 belonging to the superfamily Portunoidea is newly reported from Korean waters. Carcinus aestuarii has characteristics as followings: cardiac, hepartic and brachial regions are divided by deep furrow; shape of three lobes in frontal area is flatter with hairy; inside of carpus is with one sharp tooth; the posterior-lateral margin of the carapace is concave, and so on. The examined specimen doesn't have hairy and bump on outer margin of the chelipeds which differed from the previous description of the specimens collected from Tokyo Bay, Japan. Here, the diagnosis and the picture of Korean specimen is provided. Korean portunoids currently consist of 20 species belonging to 10 genera.

  • Only four species of leuconids have been recorded in Korea, all belonging to the genera Eudorella Norman, 1867 and Nippoleucon Watling, 1991. In this study, Pseudoleucon japonicus Gamô, 1964 belonging to family Leuconidae Sars, 1878 is newly recorded for Korean cumacean fauna. Also, for the first time, the male of the species is fully described and illustrated. The specimens were collected from the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the western sea (Yellow Sea) of Korea, with a rectangular dredge during 2007-2008. This species is characterized by the following features: the carapace has strong serrations on the antero-lateral margin and a pair of short oblique ridges on the side surface; the ridges begin near the end of frontal lobe and merge with the dorsal median carina; the appendages, such as antenna 1, pereopod 2 and uropod have a lot of simple setae decorated with a bundle of hairs at the end. The present study represents the first record on the genus Pseudoleucon Zimmer, 1903 from Korea.

  • Emerging from Portuguese colonialism and Indonesian occupation to become one of the newest states, Timor-Leste is an interesting example of modern nation-building. Geographically, Timor-Leste is located in the area covered by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). In such context, Timor-Leste has a strong claim to belonging to Southeast Asia. Timor-Leste nevertheless has not yet been admitted formally as a member despite its application for membership in March 2011. This paper locates Timor-Leste in a broader context of their construction of regional identity and as part of Southeast Asia. Drawing upon the constructivist approach, this paper suggests that the complexity of Timor-Leste's regional affiliation with ASEAN is made more challenging with its quest to assert itself as a nation-in-the-making.

  • Through a taxonomic study on solitary corals collected from subtidal zones of South and East Seas from 2019 to 2022, Paracyathus rotundatus, an unrecorded species belonging to family Caryophylliidae, is newly added to the anthozoan fauna of Korea. In addition, comparing partial 16S rRNA sequences with a length of 269 bp according to color variation clarified that there were no sequence differences among specimens with color variation, indicating that the color variation is due to intraspecific variation. As a result of this study, a total of 7 genera and 8 species belonging to the Caryophylliidae family have been reported in Korean waters so far.

  • Talaromyces is a genus within the phylum Ascomycota (class Eurotiomycetes, order Eurotiales, family Trichocomaceae). Many species in this genus are known to produce diverse secondary metabolites with great potential for agricultural, medical, and pharmaceutical applications. During a survey on fungal diversity in the genus Talaromyces in Korea, six strains were isolated from soil, indoor air, and freshwater environments. Based on morphological, physiological, and multi-locus (ITS, BenA, CaM, and RPB2) phylogenetic analyses, we identified five previously unrecorded species in Korea (T. brevis, T. fusiformis, T. muroii, T. ruber, and T. soli) and a new species (T. echinulatus sp. nov.) belonging to section Talaromyces. Herein, detailed descriptions, illustrations, and phylogenetic tree are provided.
