Hybrid simulation (HS) has attracted community attention in recent years as an efficient and effective experimental technique for structural performance evaluation in size-limited laboratories. Traditional hybrid simulations usually take deterministic properties for their numerical substructures therefore could not account for inherent uncertainties within the engineering structures to provide probabilistic performance assessment. Reliable structural performance evaluation, therefore, calls for stochastic hybrid simulation (SHS) to explicitly account for substructure uncertainties. The experimental design of SHS is explored in this study to account for uncertainties within analytical substructures. Both computational simulation and laboratory experiments are conducted to evaluate the pseudo-random Sobol sequence for the experimental design of SHS. Meta-modeling through polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) is established from a computational simulation of a nonlinear single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure to evaluate the influence of nonlinear behavior and ground motions uncertainties. A series of hybrid simulations are further conducted in the laboratory to validate the findings from computational analysis. It is shown that the Sobol sequence provides a good starting point for the experimental design of stochastic hybrid simulation. However, nonlinear structural behavior involving stiffness and strength degradation could significantly increase the number of hybrid simulations to acquire accurate statistical estimation for the structural response of interests. Compared with the statistical moments calculated directly from hybrid simulations in the laboratory, the meta-model through PCE gives more accurate estimation, therefore, providing a more effective way for uncertainty quantification.
Boiler design should be desinged to maximize thermal efficiency of the system under imposed load requirement and a boiler should be validated for transient operation. If a proper prediction is possible on the transient behavior and transient characteristics of a boiler, one may asses the performance of boiler component, control logics and operation procedures. In this work, dynamic modeling method of boiler is presented and dynamic simulation of load runback scenario was carried out on suprecritical oil-firing boiler.
Soft tissue characterization and modeling based on living tissues has been investigated in order to provide a more realistic behavior in a virtual reality based surgical simulation. In this paper, we characterize the nonlinear viscoelastic properties of intra-abdominal organs using the data from in vivo animal experiments and inverse FE parameter estimation algorithm. In the assumptions of quasi-linear-viscoelastic theory, we estimated the nonlinear material parameters to provide a physically based simulation of tissue deformations. To calibrate the parameters to the experimental results, we developed a three dimensional FE model to simulate the forces at the indenter and an optimization program that updates new parameters and runs the simulation iteratively. The comparison between simulation and experimental behavior of pig intra abdominal soft tissue are presented to provide a validness of the tissue model using our approach.
This paper presents a simulation tool for developing and evaluating automated driving systems' lane change algorithm in urban congested traffic. The behavior of surrounding vehicles was modeled based on driver driving data measured in urban congested traffic. Surrounding vehicles are divided into aggressive vehicles and non-aggressive vehicles. The degree of aggressiveness is determined according to the lateral position to initiate interaction with the vehicle in the next lane. In addition, the desired velocity and desired time gap of each vehicle are all randomly assigned. The simulation was conducted by reflecting the cognitive limitations and control performance of the autonomous vehicle. It was possible to confirm the change in the lane change performance according to the variation of the lane change decision algorithm.
Most of surface water ways in Egypt suffer from the infestation of aquatic weeds especially submerged ones which cause lots of problems for the open channels and the water structures such as increasing water losses, obstructing the water flow, and reducing the efficiency of the water structures. Accurate simulation of the water flow behavior in such channels is very essential for water distribution decision makers. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been widely utilized in the past ten years in civil engineering applications for the simulation and prediction of the different physical phenomena and has proven its capabilities in the different fields. The present study aims towards introducing the use of ANN technique to model and predict the impact of the existence of submerged aquatic weeds on the hydraulic performance of open channels. Specifically the current paper investigates utilizing the ANN technique in developing a simulation and prediction model for the flow behavior in an open channel experiment that simulates the existence of submerged weeds as branched flexible elements. This experiment was considered as an example for implementing the same methodology and technique in a real open channel system. The results of current manuscript showed that ANN technique was very successful in simulating the flow behavior of the pre-mentioned open channel experiment with the existence of the submerged weeds. In addition, the developed ANN models were capable of predicting the open channel flow behavior in all the submerged weeds' cases that were considered in the ANN development process.
Cantilevered carbon-nanotube-resonator was investigated via classical molecular dynamics simulations. The resonator system is including the attached nanocluster. A nanocluster with a finite length was modeling by some atomic rings. The mass of the nanocluster was equally distributed on the carbon atoms, composed of the atomic rings. The effective density factor, which could be considered as the single parameter affecting the resonance frequency shift, was significantly influenced by the mass, the position, and the linear density of the attached nanocluster. The linear density of the attached nanocluster was an important parameter to analyze the vibrational behavior of the CNT-resonator, including the attached nanocluster.

In the simulation of underwater vehicles such as a submarine or a torpedo, various type of simulations like an engineering level simulation for predicting the performance precisely and an engagement level simulation for examining the effectiveness of a certain tactic is required. For this reason, a tactics manager which can change the behavior of a simulation model according to external tactics is needed. In this study the tactics manager supporting a script language and engine which can represent various tactics and can help users define external input tactics for the tactic manager easily is suggested. Python and Lua which are representative among script languages have been compared and analyzed from the viewpoint of a tactic manage, and the tactic manger using the script engines of those script languages was implemented. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the tactic manager, a target motion analysis simulation of the warfare between a submarine and a surface ship.
This study describes a dynamic model of the hydroforming process which is used for precision forming of sheet metals. To help the controller design for the control of the forming pressure needed for this process as well as to investigate the effect of system parameters on the dynamic behavior, dynamic modeling is performed with emphasis on hydraulic servo system which actuates the forming machine. Since the model contains several unknown parameters, these were estimated via a least square parameter identification method. Based upon the identified model, a series of simulations were performed for various operating conditions. The results were compared with those of the experiments to verify the validity of the proposed model. The comparison study shows that the proposed dynamic model can describe dynamic behavior of the forming pressure of the hydroforming process to desirable accuracy.
This study presents a macro-modeling procedure for nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete panels under blast loading. The analysis procedure treats cracked concrete as an orthotropic material based on a smeared rotating crack model within the context of total-load secant stiffness-based formulation. A direct time integration method compatible with the analysis formulation is adapted to solve the dynamic equation of motion. Considerations are made to account for strain rate effects. The analysis procedure is verified by modeling 14 blast tests from various sources reported in the literature including a blast simulation contest. The analysis results are compared against those obtained from experiments, simplified single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) methods, and sophisticated hydrocodes. It is demonstrated that the smeared crack macro-modeling approach is a viable alternative analysis procedure that gives more information about the structural behavior than SDOF methods, but does not require detailed micro-modeling and extensive material characterization typically needed with hydrocodes.
