The effects of air velocity and excess air on combustion characteristics were studied in a fluidized bed combustor. The domestic low-grade anthracite coal with heating value of 2010 kcal/kg and the imported bituminous coal from Australia with heating value of 6520 kcal/kg were used as coal samples. The combustion characteristics of mixed fuels in a fluidized bed combustor could be interpreted by pressure fluctuation properties, ash distribution and gas emission. The properties of the pressure fluctuations, such as the standard deviation, cross-correlation function, dominant frequency and the power spectral density function, were obtained from the statistical analysis. From this study, the combustion region increased with increasing air velocity but decreased with excess air due to combustion characteristics of anthracite and bituminous coal.
Three Lab-scale combustors of different types were made to observe some basic phenomena of fuel combustion in the combustors ; grate type combustor, rotary kiln and FBC. The aims were to introduce how to simulate the combustion behaviors in the real plants by utilizing the reduced apparatuses and characterize the combustors relating to some important parameters such as fuel size, water contents, bed temperature, rotating speed of kiln, flow rate. The mean carbon conversion time and the flame propagation rate were adopted for the quantitative analysis.
The behavior of Cl is important to prevent HCl exhausted by incineration of RDF. Because RDF is composed of municipal wastes, its calorific value is very various. Thus components of RDF are to be analyzed and elemental analyze and calorific value are to be done. And in order to find the behavior of Cl during RDF combustion, Cl included in exhaust gas and ash is captured and analyzed. RDF which made by municipal and $Ca(OH)_2$ with regular ratio(Ca/0.5Cl) is incinerated in fluidized bed combustor. Cl included in exhaust gas and fly ash is captured and analyzed. Finally the change of Cl concentration included in exhaust gas and ash is analyzed and the behavior of Cl is investigated.
Combustion of refuse derived fuel(RDF) and refuse plastic fuel (RPF) was carried out in a lab-scale circulating fluidized bed. Experiment was investigated cold flow visualization. RDF was made by C & tech and RPF was made by KRS. The results include distribution of temperature in the combustion chamber, and concentrations of flue gas such as $O_2$, $CO_2$, CO, $NO_x$ and HCs Micro G.C(gas chromatograph) was employed to find out concentration of He Temperature distribution was different when RDF and RPF were burnt respectably. As air ratio became increased, $CO_2$, CO, and total of HCs emissions were decreased. According to the number of carbon atom of HCs, HC were classified as five kinds of HC.
This study is aimed to characterize the combustion behavior of solid fuel in the various types of the combustors: stoker, rotary kiln and fluidized bed type combustors. Three different types of reduced-scale combustors are introduced, and temperatures and flue gas compositions are measured for various fuel sizes, water contents, initial temperature, and air flow rates. In case of the rotary kiln combustor, effects of rotating speed of the combustor are also investigated. Mean carbon conversion time (MCCT) and flame propagation rate (FPR) are used for the quantitative analysis. It is revealed that the reaction rates of the fuel are significantly influenced by the fuel characteristics, type of the combustors and air flow rate. Major design parameters for each type of the combustors are summarized through the reduced-scaled model analysis.
A numerical investigation using a commercial CFD program of the Inter-Phase Slip Algorithm has been carried out for detail characteristics of particle motions and bubble behaviors in a two dimensional fluidized bed. The bed simulated has been operated with three different distributor geometries, such as bubble cap, nozzle, and perforated plate types. Experiments using a slit-type two-dimensional fluidized bed and a cylinder-type fluidized bed have been performed in order to confirm the simulation model. In addition, the numerical results are compared with the wellknown correlation of bubble sizes and bubble rising velocities by Mori and Wen [1]. The simulation model that we applied is shown to be useful to understand the relation between bubble behaviors and distributor geometries.
The objective of present work is to investigate experimentally the characteristics of heat transfer. A fluidized bed combustion has advantages of pollution control, fuel flexibility and excellent heat transfer. The present study investigates fundamental phenomena of bed-to-surface heat transfer in high temperature fluidized beds to improve design of immersed tube surface. The tested operating variables are bed temperature, supeficial velocity, mean size of bed material, and the rake angle of fin. Generally, heat transfer rates between the fluidized bed and immersed finned-tube are much higher than those of a smooth tube. A life time of finned-tube is generally longer than that of smooth tube.
Diversification of combustion fuel is the demands of the times and biomass is the most attractive option since it can contribute to the prevention of global warming at the same time. Due to the national renewable obligation, generally called Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), many power companies are considering direct combustion of biomass or co-firing with coal. In order to use biomass as a fuel, informations of its combustion characteristics and ash related problems should be investigated. In this study, combustion performance of biomass was assessed in a bubbling fluidized bed combustor, and ash characteristics of various biomass fuels were studied with standard test method.
This paper reviews the previous industrial solid bed process simulations to provide a better understanding of the modeling approaches to the particle reactions in the bed. Previous modeling studies on waste incinerator, iron ore sintering bed, blast furnace, iron ore pellet indurator, and biomass combustor can be seen on the common ground of unsteady 1-D modeling scheme. Approaches to the particle reaction modeling have been discussed in terms of the status of solid particles in the bed, types of reaction progression in a particle, and the consideration of the intra-particle temperature gradient.
Computational flow dynamics(CFD) has been frequently applied to the waste incinerators to understand the flow performance for various design and operating parameters. Though it needs many simplifications and complicated flow models, the reasonability of its results is not fully evaluated. For example, the inlet condition is calculated from an arbitrarily assumed properties of combustion gas release from the waste bed, since the combustion in the bed is difficult to be predicted. In this study, the computational modeling and calculation procedures of CFD for the grate type waste incinerator were evaluated using comparative simulations. Though the assumption method on the generation of the combustion gas directly affected the temperature and gas species concentrations, the overall flow pattern was dominated by the secondary air jets. The gaseous reaction could be included by assuming the release of the products of incomplete combusion from the bed. However, the reaction effficiency cannot not be directly evaluated from the species concentration, since it is not possible to simulate the actual co-existence of fuel rich or oxygen rich puffs over the bed. In predicting the turbulence, the higher order model, such as Reynolds stress model, gave difference shape of local recirculation zones, but similar results was acquired from the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. Introducing radiation model was required for accurate temperature prediction, but it also caused heat imbalance due to the fixed temperature of the inlet, i.e. the waste bed. Thus, the computational modeling procedures on incinerators and the analysis of the predicted results should be progressed carefully. Though not validated experimentally, current simulation method is capable of comparative evaluation on the flow-related parameters such as the furnace shape and secondary air injection using identical inlet conditions. Quantitative analysis using measures of the residence time and mixing is essential to compare the flow performance efficiently.
