  • Fiber element method in earthquake response analysis of bridges is used to represents a realistic flexural deformation according to nonlinear behavior of beam-column section. Nonlinear pseudo-static analysis of two column bent using fiber element is accomplished and failure mechanism of the plastic hinge region is studied. Load-displacement curve obtained by nonlinear pseudo-static analysis can be applicable to earthquake response analysis by capacity spectrum method. The nonlinear time history analysis of a full bridge model using fiber element experienced by the ground motion corresponding to the target response spectrum is accomplished. The result of time history analysis is similar to that of capacity spectrum method.

  • In recent years increased attention has been directed towards the problems of vibration and noise in superstructure, which have caused major problems with regard to the environmental afterbody of the ship, and the fore-and-after vibration of superstructure due to the vertical vibration of main hull girder is the most important as for the inhabitation of the ship. Accordingly, in this paper, the characteristics of the fore-and after vibration of superstructure and studied systematically with regard to the shape and height of superstructure based on finite element method of beam-like model. The study is divided into two parts, one is the calculation of natural frequencies and the other is the investigation of response at the top of superstructure caused by in its harmonic excitation force at the stern of hull girder. For the natural frequency the calculation results are shown that the higher superstructure is, the lower the natural frequencies of the fore-and-after vibration of superstructure is. It means that the natural frequency of superstructure is close to that of hull girder. The response of vertical direction at the stern of hull girder induced by unit harmonic force is less affected by the shape and the height of superstructure but the response of the fore-and-after direction at the top of superstructure is affected considerably by those of superstructure.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish flexural behavior of high-strength concrete beams confined in the pure bending zone with stirrups. The experiment was carried out on full-scale high-strength reinforced concrete beams, of which the compressive strengths were 40 MPa and 70 MPa. The beams were confined with rectangular closed stirrups. Test results are reviewed in terms of flexural capacity and ductility. The effect of web reinforcement ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio and shear span to beam depth ratio on ductility are investigated. The analytic method is based on finite element method using fiber-section model, which is known to define the behavior of reinforced concrete structures well up to the ultimate state and is proven to be valid by the verification with the experimental results above. It is found that confinement of concrete compressive regions with closed stirrups does not affect the flexural strength but results in a significantly increased ductility. Moreover, the ductility tends to increase as the quantity of stirrups increases by reducing the spacing of stirrups.

  • In this paper behavior of U-Channel Bridge (UCB) and the slab design considering construction sequence was studied. The segments of UCB are produced in the factory and transported to the site by trailers, and the segments are fabricated in the construction field. In this sequence the supporting conditions are changed. Four steps that were the segment precasting step, the segment carrying step, the segment placed on the erection beam step, and the completion step were chosen by supporting condition. In each step model using the frame and plate elements was proposed and structural analysis was performed. Four construction steps were to be considered in the process of slab analysis. The design method of slab was proposed considering construction sequence.

  • Recently, as the technology of utilization for the ocean space is being advanced, floating structures are asked for being mare and mare huge-scale. A very large floating structure(VLFS) is considered as a flexible structure, because of a quite large length-to-breadth ratio and its geometrical flexibility. The main object of this study is to develop an accurate and convenient method on the hydroelastic response analysis of very large offshore structures on the real sea states. The numerical approach for the hydorelastic responses is based on the combination of the three dimensional source distribution methods, the dynamic response analysis method and the spectral analysis method. A model is considered as many rigid bodies connected elastic beam elements. The calculated results shaw good agreement with the experimental and calculated ones by Ohta.

  • The fire testing performed for smoke detector model approval in Korea tests only one kind of fire smoke. A photoelectric spot-type smoke detector using Mie scattering is affected by the wavelength of light beam and the particle diameter. According to UL (Underwriters Laboratories Inc.) 268 standard, this paper analyze the characteristic of the response for a photoelectric spot-type smoke detector on sale in Korea using various fire smokes. Probability that the response time is included in non-defective range is 100% in paper fire, 90% in wood fire and 75% in flammable liquid fire, 90% in wood fire and 75% in flammable liquid fire. According to the estimation for population mean of the response time choosing a confidence level of 99%, a maximum of 19% for wood fire and that of 38% for flammable liquid fire are defective. As the result of analysis of smoke particle, this paper is found that these results are caused by the smoke particles are wide variations in size or have very black.

  • The formulation of a new bridge-vehicle system using shell with eccentric beam elements has been introduced in a companion paper (Part I). The new system takes into account of the contribution of the twisting and pitching modes of vehicles to the bridge responses. It can also be used to study the dynamic transverse load distribution of a bridge. This paper presents a parametric study on the impact induced by one vehicle or multi-vehicle running across a bridge using the proposed model. Several parameters were considered as variables including the mass ratio, the speed parameter, the frequency ratio and the axle spacing parameter to investigate their effects on the impact factor. A total number of 189 cases were carried out in this parametric study. Within the realistic range of vehicle considered, the maximum impact factors could be 2.24, 1.78 and 1.49 for bridges with spans 10 m, 20 m and 30 m respectively.

  • Downbursts are of great harm to transmission lines and many towers can even be destroyed. The downburst wind field model by Chen and Letchford was applied, and the wind loads of two typical transmission towers in inland areas and littoral areas were calculated separately. Spatial finite element models of the transmission towers were established by elastic beam and link elements. The wind loads as well as the dead loads of conductors and insulators were simplified and applied on the suspension points by concentrated form. Structural analysis on two typical transmission towers under normal wind and downburst was completed. The bearing characteristics and the failure modes of the transmission towers under downburst were determined. The failure state of tower members can be judged by the calculated stress ratios. It shows that stress states of the tower members were mainly controlled by 45 degree wind load. For the inland areas with low deign wind velocity, though the structural height is not in the highest wind velocity zone of downburst, the wind load under downburst is much higher than that under normal wind. The main members above the transverse separator of the legs will be firstly destroyed. For the littoral areas with high deign wind velocity, the wind load under downburst is lower than under normal wind. Transmission towers are not controlled by the wind loads from downbursts in design process.

  • Structural damage and moving load identification are the two aspects of structural system identification. However, they universally coexist in the damaged structures subject to unknown moving load. This paper proposed a dynamic response sensitivity-based model updating method to simultaneously identify the structural damage and moving force. The moving force which is equivalent as the nodal force of the structure can be expressed as a series of orthogonal polynomial. Based on the system Markov parameters by the state space method, the dynamic response and the dynamic response derivatives with respect to the force parameters and elemental variations are analytically derived. Afterwards, the damage and force parameters are obtained by minimizing the difference between measured and analytical response in the sensitivity-based updating procedure. A numerical example for a simply supported beam under the moving load is employed to verify the accuracy of the proposed method.
