Prediction of the product shape in sheet casting process is performed from the numerical simulation. A three-dimensional finite element method is used to investigate the flow behavior and to examine the effects of processing conditions on the sheet produced. Effects of inertia, gravity, surface tension and non-Newtonian viscosity on the thickness profile of the sheet are considered since the edge bead and the flow patterns in the chill roll region have great influence on the quality of the products. In the numerical simulation with free surface flows, the spine method is adopted to update the free surface, and the force-free boundary condition is imposed along the take-up plane to avoid severe singularity problems existing at the take-up plane. From the numerical results of steady isothermal flows of a generalized Newtonian fluid, it is shown that the draw ratio plays a major role in predicting the shape of the final sheet produced and the surface tension has considerable effect on the bead thickness ratio and the bead width fraction, while shear-thinning and/or tension-thickening viscosity affect the degree of neck-in.
In the circumferential welding of pipe, welding phenomenon changes with the position of pipe. Especially in the overhead position, back bead of vertical-up position would be sunk. To investigate the size of back bead and keyhole with the change of the flow rate of pilot and shield gas at each position, bead-on plate welds were conducted on 6mm thickness SS400 with inclined-up position. When the rest of welding conditions remained constant, the width of back bead was increased as the flow rate of pilot gas was increased. And back bead tended to convex as the flow rate of shield gas was increased.

Investigations of process parameters are essential when fabricating high-quality parts using additive manufacturing. This study investigates the change in the mechanical characteristics of a SUS316L specimen fabricated using selective laser melting based on the energy density and bead overlap ratio. The SUS316L powder particles were spherical and 35 ㎛ in size. Single-bead and hexahedral shape deposition experiments were performed sequentially. A single bead experiment was performed to obtain the bead overlap ratios for different laser parameters utilizing laser power and scan speed as experimental parameters. A hexahedral shape deposition experiment was also performed to observe the difference in mechanical properties, such as the internal porosity, surface roughness, and hardness, based on the energy density and bead overlap ratio of the three-dimensional printed part. Laser power, scan speed, overlap ratio, and layer thickness were chosen as parameters for the hexahedral shape deposition experiment. Accordingly, the energy density applied for three-dimensional printing, and the experimental parameters were calculated, and the energy density and bead overlap ratio for fabricating parts with good properties have been suggested.
This paper deals with the effect of laser welding parameters on the weld formation. Thin steels for automotive application were prepared so as to be welded with high power carbon dioxide laser system. Major process parameters were position of focus and travel speed. The effect of shielding gas was also discussed by employing the high speed photometry. Test results showed that the optimal position of focus varied in accordance with the joint configuration; bead-on-plate, butt or lap welding. It was recommended that the position of focus for the lap welding be located at slightly inner part of the material to be welded. In this case, however, it was noticeable that the weld penetration ratio, d/t$_{0}$ dropped drastically at the critical region. Results also demonstrated that both the bead width and penetration reduced as the travel speed increased. The penetration ratio showed two distinct regions; stabilized zone at the lower range of the travel spped and sudden drop zone at the higher range of travel speed. Lower limit of the penetration for acceptable weld was proved to be about 90% of the parent metal thickness based on the physical properties of the weld. Mixed gas application for both the shielding of molten metal and laser induced plasma control was recommended as far as the penetration was concerned.d.
Direct laser melting (DLM) is a powder-based additive manufacturing process to produce parts by layer-by-layer laser melting. As the properties of the manufactured parts depend strongly on the deposited laser-melted bead, deposited layers obtained by the DLM process were characterized in this study. This investigation used a 200 W fiber laser to produce single-line beads under a variety of different energy distributions. In order to obtain a feasible range for the two main process parameters (i.e. laser power and scan rate), bead shapes of single track deposition were intensively investigated. The effects of the processing parameters, such as powder layer thickness and scan spacing, on geometries of the deposited layers have also been analyzed. As a result, minimum energy criteria that can achieve a complete melting have been suggested at the given powder layer thickness. The surface roughnesses of the deposited beads were strongly dependent on the overlap ratio of adjacent beads and on the energy distributions of laser power. Through microstructural analysis and hardness measurement, the morphological and mechanical properties of the deposited layers at various overlapped beads have also been characterized.
The multilayer structure of glass/Ta(5.8 nm)/NiFe(5 nm)/Cu(t nm)/NiFe(3 nm)/FeMn(12 nm)/Ta(5.8 nm) as typical GMR-SV (giant magnetoresistance-spin valve) films is prepared by ion beam sputtering deposition (IBD). The coercivity and magnetoresiatance ratio are increased and decreased for the decrease of Cu thickness when the thickness of nonmagnetic Cu layer from is varied 2.2 nm to 3.0 nm. It means that the decrease of non-magntic layer is effected to the interlayer exchange coupling of pinned layer and the spin configuration array of free layer. For experiment of detecting and dropping of magnetic beads we used the GMR-SV sensor with glass/Ta/NiFe/Cu/NiFe/FeMn/Ta structure. From the comparison of before and after for the dropping status of magnetic bead, the variations of MR ratio, $H_{ex}$, and $H_c$ are showed 0.9 %, 3 Oe, and 2 Oe, respectively. The fabrication of GMR-SV sensor was included in the process of film deposition, photo-lithography, ion milling, and MR measurement. Further, GMR-SV device can be easily integrated so that detecting biosensor on a single chip becomes possible.
Weld bead quality in tailored blank(TB) is critically affected by edge preparation of sheets. The edge quality of prepared sheets for TB can be classified into straightness and the cross section quality of sheared plane such as a ratio of shear face, shear plane angle, etc. In order to have a good edg quality for butt-welding sheets, precision shearing will be recommended. In this paper, the feasibility of a conventional mechanical shearing as the edge preparation for tailored blanks is studyied. It reveals that fine shearing may not be the unique solution as it is generally accepted. To obtain the good shearing condition with a conventional mechanical shearing, experiments were carried out using Tahuchi method. The major parameters affecting a sheared contour are the clearance between upper blade and lower blade, and shear angle. The optimal shearing condition yields a very good straightness along the entire length of the cut, which gives a butt joint gap less than 10% of the base material thickness. The good cross section of sheared plane is also achieved in the optimal shearing condition such as a ratio of the shear face above 65%, a cross section's shear plane angle above 85%, little burr, which is providing finally good weld beads.

Spot welding which use the main process for side block production of stainless steel railway vehicle is legged behind in laser welding about a quality and productivity. Although the laser welding has many potential advantages such as low heat input and aspect ratio of weld bead, its application to a new structural component still is required many engineering data including mechanical properties such as tensile, fatigue strength, etc on. Therefore, experimental analysis was carried out to understand the fatigue phenomena of different thickness stainless steel overlap joining panels by Nd:YAG laser welding. The fatigue life curves were obtained through fatigue tests with the various levels of applied load. The fatigue life is related with the parameters such as gap size and penetration depth through experiment. As the results, tensile strength and fatigue life were proportional in heat input level and gap was identified the major factor for fatigue life. Also we could know that deferent a-ferrite content at HAZ depend on welding heat input was important factor to determine a formation of initial crack and total fatigue life cycle.

In this study, isolated and cultured nitrogen fixed microbes were seeded in the three-phase fluidized bed in which gas, solid and liquid were contacted directly. Input velocity was varied from 8.12 cm/hr to 16.32 cm/hr. And upflow gas pressure was fixed to 80 psi. Return ratios were from 0.2 to 0.6 with the each experimental condition. According to these condition, movement of media, growth of biofilm and removal efficiency were measured. As the results, in case of briquette ash, biofilm was developed to $170{\mu}m$ when velocity was 8.12 cm/hr and return ratio was 0.6. In this condition, COD removal efficiency was 97% and $NH_4$-N removal efficiency was 83%. At the same condition, biofilm thickness of glass bead was $17.59{\mu}m$ and its COD and $NH_4$-N removal efficiency was 83% and 72%. Nitrogen fixed microbes have following characters: it formed dark-brownish sludge, excellent adhesive force, easy solid-liquid separation and low oxygen uptake ratio, but sensitive to DO concentration. Not only it endured shock loading, but required short time to steady state.
Generally, as the welded region of weld structures has the incomplete bead and welded deposit which are able to behave like the surface cracks occasinally, there is a high possibility that the fatigue fracture of the weld structures is due to the surface cracks on the wlded region. This study was done to investigate the effects of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) on the fatigue behaviors of the surface crack of the heat affected zone (HAZ) for the multi-pass welds under the repetitive pure bending moment. The obtained results are summarized as follows : 1. The crack grows to the depth direction initially as the number of cylces increase, the amount of crack length is increased for the surface dir3ction and cive versa for the depth direction. 2. The fatigue life is increased in a order of as weld, PWHT specimens and parent. 3. As the number of cycles increase, the crack length is increased to th surface direction. The increase of the depth length is blunted at the center of specimen thickness. 4. The fatigue crack growth of PWHT specimens to the surface direction is dependent upon the holding time and applied stress during PWHT. In order words, the crack growth rate decreases with the holding time and increases with the applied stress during PWHT. 5. As the crack grows, the aspect formed in the course of crack propagation approaches to semicircle for parent and ellipse with the largest semidiameter for PWHT ($1/4hr, 15kgf/mm^2$) 6. At depth direction, it is difficult to apply to the paris' equation because of the scattered data between the crack growth rate and the stress intensity factor range.
