  • Sialic acid, which is contained in about 60-160 mg/kg in the edible bird's nest (EBN), is known to facilitate in the proper formation of synapses and improve memory function. The objective of this study is to extract effectively the sialic acid from edible bird's nest using affinity bead technology (ABT). After preparing the non-polar polymeric bead "KJM-278-28A" having a porous network structure, and then desorbed sialic acid was concentrated and dried. The analysis of the physicochemical properties of bead "KJM-278-28A" showed that the particle size was 400-700 ㎛, the moisture holding capacity was 67-70%, the surface area (BET) was 705-900 ㎡/g, and the average pore diameter 70-87 Å. The adsorption capacity of the bead "KJM-278-28A" for sialic acid was shown a strong physical force to bind sialic acid to the bead surface of 400 mg/L. In addition, as a result of analyzing the adsorption and desorption effects of sialic acid on water, ethanol, and 10% ethanol on the bead, it was confirmed that desorption effectively occurs from the beads when only ethanol is used. As a result of HPLC measurement of the separated sialic acid solution, a total of four sialic acid peaks of N-acetyl-neuraminic acid (Neu5Ac), α,β-anomer of Neu5Ac and N-glycoly-neuraminic acid were identified. Through these results, it was confirmed that it is possible to separate sialic acid from EBN extract with efficient and high yield when using ABT.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm for segmenting weld bead images using edge enhancement and active contours. In the proposed method, high-frequency filtering and contrast improvement are performed for edge enhancement, and then, by applying the active contour method, only the weld bead region can be obtained. The proposed algorithm detects an edge through high-frequency filtering and reinforces the detected edge by using contrast enhancement. After the edge information is improved in this way, the weld bead area can be extracted by applying the active contour method. The proposed algorithm shows better performance than the existing methods for segmenting the weld bead in the image. For the objective reliability of the proposed algorithm, it was compared with the existing high pass filtering methods, and it was confirmed that the welding bead segmentation of the proposed method is excellent. The proposed method can be usefully used in evaluating the quality of the weld bead through an additional procedure for the segmented weld bead.

  • The robotic arc welding is widely employed in the fabrication industry fer increasing productivity and enhancing product quality by its high processing speed, accuracy and repeatability. Basically, the bead geometry plays an important role in determining the mechanical properties of the weld. So that it is very important to select the process variables for obtaining optimal bead geometry. In this paper, the possibilities of the Infrared camera in sensing and control of the bead geometry in the automated welding process are presented. Both bead width and thermal images from infrared thermography are effected by process parameters. Bead width and isotherm radii can be expressed in terms of process parameters(welding current and welding speed) using mathematical equations obtained by empirical analysis using infrared camera. A linear relationship exists between the isothermal radii producted during the welding process and bead width.

  • It is important to investigate the relationship between weld process parameters and weld bead geometry for adaptive arc robot welding. Howeve, it is difficult to predict an exact back-bead owing to gap in process of butt welding. In this paper, the quantitative prediction system to specify the relationship external weld conditions and weld bead geometry was developed to get suitable back-bead in butt welding which is widely applied on industrial field. Multiple regression analysis for the prediction of process parameters was used as the research method. And, the results of the prediction method were compared and analyzed.

  • The fixed solid catalysts such as glass bead, steel mesh, and $TiO_2$ coated ceramic bead were used to investigate effect of radical production at different frequencies. The radical production rate at 300 kHz was faster than that at 35 kHz without solid, but the tendency was changed with the presence of glass bead. The presence of glass beads create non-continuous points between the solid and liquid phases leading to increased formation of cavitation bubbles. However, the radical production decreased when steel mesh was used at 35 kHz although the surface area of contact with liquid was same when glass bead was used. Hence the solid catalyst did not always enhance the radical production. The radical production using $TiO_2$ coated ceramic bead was dramatically increased at 35 kHz due to the breakage of $TiO_2$ coated ceramic bead. Therefore the radical productions at 300 kHz using fixed solid catalysts generally increased while at 35 kHz the results fluctuated according to the experimental conditions.

  • In this paper, we investigated the application method and properties of 0.1 mm, 0.2 mm and 0.3 mm beads, which can secure a certain thickness due to the molding stability of joint surfaces of different materials (aluminum and composite). In order to verify this, the influence was evaluated according to the thickness of the adhesive in the Double lap test and the FEM simulation. As a result, it was confirmed that as the content of the bead of the adhesive increased more than 1%, the strength of the adhesion increased and the elongation decreased. We confirmed as the size of the bead became larger, the rigidity became lower and the elongation increased.

  • Recently, there has been a rapid development in computer technology, which has in turn led to develop the automated welding system using Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, the automated welding system has not been achieved duo to difficulties of the control and sensor technologies. In this paper, the classification of the optimized bead geometry such as bead width, height penetration and bead area in the Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding with fuzzy logic is presented. The fuzzy C-Means algorithm (FCM), which is best known an unsupervised fuzzy clustering algorithm is employed here to analysis the specimen of the bead geometry. Then the quality of the GMA welding can be classified by this fuzzy clustering technique and the choice for obtaining the optimal bead geometry can also be determined.

  • The sensors employed in the robotic are welding system must detect the changes in weld characteristics and produce the output that is in some way related to the change being detected. Such adaptive systems, which synchronise the robot arm and eyes using a primitive brain will form the basis for the development of robotic GMA(Gas Metal Arc) welding which increasingly higher levels of artificial intelligence. The objective of this paper is to realize the mapping characteristics of bead height through learning. After learning, the neural estimation can estimate the bead height desired from the learning mapping characteristic. The design parameters of the neural network estimator(the number of hidden layers and the number of nodes in a layer) are chosen from an estimation error analysis. A series of bead of bead-on-plate GMA welding experiments was carried out in order to verify the performance of the neural network estimator. The experimental results show that the proposed neural network estimator can predict the bead height with reasonable accuracy and guarantee the uniform weld quality.

  • In the roll forming, a flat strip is progressively deformed by feeding it through a series of rotating rolls. There are various layouts for the tube toll-forming stages. The process sequences are as follows: leveling, roll-forming, welding, bead removing, seam annealing, cooling, sizing and cutting. Electric resistance welded(ERW) tubes have been widely used for the machinery parts, especially for hydroformed automotive parts. However conventional ERW tubes do not have a high formability because of hardening of welded portion by rapid cooling. Moreover the decrease in thickness of the welded portion during the grinding of the inner and outer bead may reduce the formability of the tube. In case of applying the tubular parts without grinding the bead, the flow of the fluid can be prevented due to the turbulent flow induced by the inner bead. In attempt to determine the optimal bead grinding amount in the roll forming process, in the present paper, the effects of the removal depth and width of the inner beads on the hydroformability are analyzed by the finite element simulation.

  • Generally, the use of robots in manufacturing industry has been increased during the past decade. GMA(Gas Metal Arc) welding process is an actively Vowing area, and many new procedures have been developed for use with high strength alloys. One of the basic requirement for the automatic welding applications is to investigate relationships between process parameters and bead geometry. The objective of this paper is to develop a new approach involving the use of neural network and multiple regression methods in the prediction of bead geometry for GMA welding process and to develop an intelligent system that visualize bead geometry in order to employ the robotic GMA welding processes. Examples of the simulation for GMA welding process are supplied to demonstrate and verify the proposed system developed using MATLAB. The developed system could be effectively implemented not oかy for estimating bead geometry, but also employed to monitor and control the bead geometry in real time.
