In order to use bast fibers of mulberry tree at a pulp source of Hanji, the bast fibers were microbiologically treated with several wood rot fungi, and the microscopic characteristics of bast fibers depending on treatment days were evaluated. By wood rot fungi, Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Trametes versicolor, the weight reduction ratio was approximately 50 percent within incubation for 20 days. occurring together with decomposition of useful fibers. However, Hwterobasidion insularis and Stereum hirsutum have completely decomposed the utmost layer of black blue colored bast fibers, and not caused the damage if fibers. Until incubation for 10 days, the cellulose content of vast fibers by Stereum hirsutum was 78.9 percent with lignin content of 7.2 percent, showing an appropriate decomposition for useful fibers. By microscopic observation, the bundled fibers were separated to single fiber within treatement days 30 by Pleurotus ostreatus, and there were no damage on the surface of fiber by treatment days 50.
This study was carried out to develop the traditional korean paper changphanji from the bast fiber of paper mulberry The results obtained were as follows: 1. The variations in the basis weight were remarkable, but there were no significant adverse effects on the tensile strength and thickness. 2. The stamping have contributed to the improvement of smoothness and the control of thickness. The automatic pressing system recommended to obtain good control of thickness. 3. The average density of the traditional korean paper changphanji was 1.06g/$cm^3$. 4. The changphanji developed in this study gave a clude, but excellent toughness and warm feeling. Some fiber lumps, dark spots and bamboo, screen marks were also obserded. 5. The tensile strength of four-fold sheet changphanji is highest and those of two-fold sheet changphanji is lowest. the lengthwise tensile strength was higher than crosswise one due to the fiber. 6. The elongation of three-fold sheet changphanji was highest 7. The water absorption of all products ranged from 11.3g/$m^2$ to 17.5g/$m^2$. 8. The wight loss by abrasion was 34.0%(four-fold sheet) 31.6%(three fold sheet), 31.0% (two-fold sheet)respectively. 9. Based on the results obtained. tensile strength and elongation, the four-fold sheet was excellent. the use of the bast fiber of paper mulberry as a raw material is attractive point which can not obtained from the commercial changphanji made from other raw materials.

Fiber characteristics and fiber distribution of thermomechanical pulp(TMP), bisulfite chemithermomechanical pulp(bisulfite CTMP), neutral sulfite chemithermomechanical pulp(neutral sulfite CTMP) from kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus L., Malvaceae) cultivar Tainug-2 cultivated in the reclaimed land of Korea were examined to use effectively nonwood fibers as an alternative raw material sources for papermaking. Yields of TMP and CTMP from kenaf were lower than those of TMP from hardwoods and CTMP from softwoods and hardwoods. Bark fibers of kenaf cultivar Tainung-2 ranged 2.04 to 2.30 mm long and $18.7{\sim}19.7{\mu}m$ width. Core fibers averaged 0.63 to 0.80 mm long and $29.5{\sim}31.4{\mu}m$ wide. Coarseness of bark fiber was higher than that of core fiber, and fiber from TMP were higher than those from both bisulfite CTMP and neutral sulfite CTMP. Curl indexes of bark fibers were higher than those of core fibers. However curl indexes were not significantly affected by the pulping conditions. Short fiber distributions were higher in core fibers from TMP and CTMP and long fiber distributions were higher in bark fibers. There was no significant difference in fiber distribution of whole and core fibers obtained from TMP and CTMP, Fibers from neutral sulfite CTMP, however, exhibited a little higher long fiber distribution. Distinct difference in anatomical characteristics was found between core and bast fibers of kenaf plant. Parenchyma cell, pith parenchyma cell and vessel were observed in core fibers and bast fiber in bast sections.

Morphological characteristics of hemp fiber were investigated using a light microscope in order to provide fundamental data for the use of hemp as a papermaking law material. Phloem of hemp is composed of cortical parenchyma cells and bast fiber with thick walls while xylem is composed of vessel, wood fiber and ray parenchyma cells. Also there are solitary pore and radial pore multiple which exist in diffuse porous pattern. Ray cells consist of uniseriate rays and thin walled ray parenchyma cells. Wood fibers are composed of three types: a large diameter fiber with longer length; a large diameter fiber with shorter length; a small diameter fiber with medium length. Vessel elements are composed of: a medium length one; a longer length one; the one whose both end walls have ligules or tails. Parenchyma cells in xylem and pit parenchyma cells have completely different size and shape. For bast fiber, the average length is about 4.4 mm and the width is about $30.5\;{\mu}m$; for vessel element, $600.0\;{\mu}m$ in length and $493.6\;{\mu}m$ in width; for wood fiber, $1000\;{\mu}m$ and $38.9\;{\mu}m$; for parenchyma cell, $50\;{\mu}m$ and $26.4\;{\mu}m$.

This study was carried out to investigate the papermaking characteristics of paper mulberry(Broussonetia kazinoki) for new Korean traditional paper(Hanji). Hanji has been traditionally made only with the bast fiber of paper mulberry. Besides mulberry bast part, wood core was utilized separately or in mixed forms as raw materials for the new Hanji. Hanjis made from the solfomethylated pulp were shown higher brightness and sheet strengths than those from alkali and alkali-hydrogen peroxide pulps. The brightness of solfomethylated pulp was found to be high enough not to need additional bleaching. In the physical properties of the Hanjis mixed with bast part and wood core pulps, the handsheet strengths were decreased as the increase of the wood core pulp contents. But the sheet strengths of Hanjis containing 10∼30% of wood core pulps were higher than those of the Hanji containing bast part pulp only. The sheet formations were improved as the increase of wood core pulp contents, while the sheet strengths were decreased.

This study was to measure the potential of nonwoody fibrous material, kenaf. Whole stalk of kenaf, Hibiscus cannabinus was separated by two parts of bast and core portion, and cooked separately by alkaline method. Morphological characteristic was evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and fiber quality analyzer(FQA). The strength properties of handsheets, made by different mixing ration between kenaf base and core fibers, were measured. Cross-sectional area of bast fibers was smaller than that of core fibers, but the bast fibers had a thick cell wall and narrow lumen area. Bast fibers were longer in length than core fibers. Core fibers had thin cell walls, broad lumen areas, and short lengths, and they had collapsed shape even in water. These characteristics of core fibers affected strength properties of handsheet positively. When the amount of core fibers increased, the strength properties of handsheet were increased. When the amount of bast fibers increased, the handsheet had rougher surface and higher air permeability.

Excellence of the Korean traditional paper(Hanji) can be proved by literatures and legacies handed down from generations. However, with the problems pertaining to a majority of traditional manufactures, Hanji industry was declined because of low productivity, insufficient supply of raw material , and reduced demand. therefore, modernizxation of the Hanji technology and development of new uses are very important. This study was carried to investigated the papermaking characteristics of Morus spp.(M.alba, M.Bombycis, and M.Ihou) for new Hanji, modernize manufacturing process of Hanji by grafting on developed modern pulping and papermaking technology, develop the various uses, and establish the foundation for development of high value-added products. Hanji is made from M.Ihou, while stalk , and sulfomethylated pulp gave better sheet formation and higher brightness than those of the others. Physical properties of Hanji which made from bast fiber pulps were better than those of whole stalk pulps. Hanji which made from M.bombycis bast fiber and whole stalk pulps were not so good sheet strength as other species. Sulfomethylated whole stalk pulps were shown better sheet strength than alkali and alkali-hydrogen peroxide whole stalk pulps.
Indian mallow is characterized by the rapid growth and high harvest of the fibrous materials. This study was carried out to investigate the sheet properties of Hanji using Indian mallow, made by different pulping methods, such as alkali and sulfomethylated pulpings and different stock compositions, various mixing ratios of bast fiber, woody core and whole stalk fibers. The results from this study were summarized as follows. The length and width of the bast fibers were 1.40-430 mm(av. 235 mm), and 9.2-26.4 ㎛(av.18.3 ㎛), respectively. The cell wall thickness was 4.0-115 ㎛(av. 7.7 ㎛). Runkel ratio, flexibility coefficient and fiber length/fiber width ratio were 1.38, 0.42 and 128 respectively. Bast fiber and whole stalk were cooked by alkali and sulfomethylated methods. Sulfomethylated pulping resulted in superior pulp in terms of yield and quality as compared with those of alkali pulping. The pulp yields of bast fiber was higher than those of whole stalk

The bast fibers of paper mulberry were dyed by using sappan wood, gardenia, and gallnut extracted under various extraction conditions. The surface absorption rates, color, and sunlight fastness of the dyed fibers were compared to those of the dyed cotton and silk. The K/S values of silk showed the highest values, followed by gallnut, gardenia, and sappan wood. The optimum extraction conditions of the dye materials were 20 g/L (input amount of dye materials per liter), $90^{\circ}C$ (extraction temperature), and 30 minutes (extraction time). The values of saturation were observed to increase with the increase of the amount of dye materials, extraction time, and extration temperature. However, no effect were found on the values of hue and lightness. In all samples, the developed colors dyed by sappan wood and gardenia were the series of YR, and Y, respectively. The colors of dyed cotton and bast fibers of paper mulberry by gallnut were the series of Y and the dyed silk showed the series of YR. The values of saturation of the bast fibers of paper mulberry by sappan wood and gardenia showed the highest values of saturation, followed by cotton, and silk. In the case of gallnut, cotton showed the highest values of saturation, followed by the bast fibers of paper mulberry, and silk. The sunlight fastness were not improved in all dyeing conditions.

Hemp bast pulp cooked at temperature below $100^{\circ}C$ followed by defibration by the knife and the valley beater, respectively was mixed with softwood pulp varying the amount of hemp pulp in order to find the optimum condition for making hemp-wood paper. Both the knife and the valley beaters contributed to the dispersion of pulp fiber well. Lots of shives were found when the knife beater was applied exclusively, but the fibers were dispersed well when freeness dropped to 600 mL CSF and 500 mL CSF by the valley beater. Air resistance decreased drastically below 500 mL CSF where rapid disrupture of pulp fiber occurred. As the values for freeness and hemp fiber content increased, so did roughness and bulk. It was apparent that the tear strength of hemp-wood paper was on the rise drastically as hemp fiber content increased. Nevertheless the optimum hemp fiber content of hemp-wood paper would be 20% considering the decrease in both tensile and burst strengths as well as sheet formation.
