  • To characterize morphological classification of the basins, four major basin characteristics of the unit basins, including sinuosity, ratio of forest, ratio of flat area, and tributary existence were selected for cluster analysis. The analysis was carried out using soil map, topographic map, water course map, and basin map of the fifty unit basins in the Yeongsangang Basin. The unit basins could be categorized to five basin groups. The fitness by the Mantel test showed good fit of which r was 0.830. These grouping based on comprehensive soil and topographic characteristics provides best management practices, water quality management according to pollutants, increased water related model application and reasonable availability of water management. For agricultural management of water resources and conservation of water quality from agricultural non-point pollutants, therefore, comprehensive systematic classification of soil characteristics on unit basin might be an useful tool.

  • This study was performed to analyze the river fractal characteristics using GIS (Geographic Information System). In this study, topographical factors in river basin were grid-analyzed for each cell size and scale using GIS and regression formula was derived by analyzing correlation among topographical factors and cell size which were calculated here. And, a new rainfall-runoff model which is considering the calculated fractal dimension was developed to apply fur a river basin.

  • In order to establish the risk criteria of inundation due to typhoons or heavy rainfall, research is underway to predict the limit rainfall using basin characteristics, limit rainfall and artificial intelligence algorithms. In order to improve the model performance in estimating the limit rainfall, the learning data are used after the pre-processing. When 50.0% of the entire data was removed as an outlier in the pre-processing process, it was confirmed that the accuracy is over 90%. However, the use rate of learning data is very low, so there is a limitation that various characteristics cannot be considered. Accordingly, in order to predict the limit rainfall reflecting various watershed characteristics by increasing the use rate of learning data, the watersheds with similar characteristics were clustered. The algorithms used for clustering are K-Means, Agglomerative, DBSCAN and Spectral Clustering. The k-Means, DBSCAN and Agglomerative clustering algorithms are clustered at the impervious area ratio, and the Spectral clustering algorithm is clustered in various forms depending on the parameters. If the results of the clustering algorithm are applied to the limit rainfall prediction algorithm, various watershed characteristics will be considered, and at the same time, the performance of predicting the limit rainfall will be improved.

  • This study analyzed fractal characteristics of river basin by using GIS. In this study, topographical factors in river basin was grid-analyzed for each cell size by using GIS and regression formula was derived by analyzing correlation among topographical factors and cell size which were calculated here. And, analysis of fractal characteristics of river by using the result calculated from 1) showed that among topographical factors, river length only increases according as cell size increases. The result of calculating fractal dimension for each cell size shows that river length, basin area, and centroidal flow path are 1.028, 1.0026 and 1.0061 respectively.

  • Dorang - the Korean term for headwater streams - occupy a large portion of the total stream length in a basin, and contribute significantly towards the quantitative and qualitative characteristics, and the ecosystem, of the main river. The Ministry of Environment of South Korea has supported the investigation of the status of Dorang in the nation's four major basins, since 2007. Without a widely accepted academic or legal definition of Dorang, however, there are limits to understand the distribution of Dorang at the national scale and to systematically compile a Dorang database. This paper, through a review of the stream classification system and Korean legal system delineating streams, defines Dorang as 1st and 2nd order streams according to the Strahler ordering method, in a 1:25,000 geographical scale. Analysis of the Geum River basin, with this definition, reveals that the total length of Dorang is 20,622.4 km (73.6% of total stream length), and the number of Dorang catchments is 23,639 (71.3% of the basin area). Further analysis of the geomorphological characteristics of Dorang catchments shows that the average total stream length is 1.1 km, average catchment length is 1.2 km, average drainage area is $0.4km^2$, and average drainage density is 3.08/km.

  • A hydraulic coefficient is a factor representing the hydraulic characteristics of the stream or river. For that reason, we survey stream characteristics such as cross section for performing the stream improvement plan and then we calculate hydraulic coefficient based on its surveyed results. This hydraulic coefficient can be used as an important parameter to calculate flood water level in stream, sediment discharge and water quality. However, we cannot calculate the hydraulic characteristics in an ungaged basin. To overcome this problem, we used the SWAT model for calculating the hydraulic coefficient in the ungaged basin.

  • The stability of rock slope is considered to have a deep relation with types of rocks because types of rocks have their own typical weathering profiles, geological structures and characteristics of failures. Therefore it is essential for the evaluation of rock slope stability to analyze geological and engineering characteristics in rock mass. The data which collected from investigated slopes in sedimentary rock of Kyengsang Basin along highways were analyzed. Primary factors affecting slope stability in rock mass are: dips and strikes of slopes and discontinuities, shear strength of discontinuities, slope geometry and geological structures etc.

  • Understanding of the hydraulics of flow is very important to support the management of river. The cross-sectional area, average velocity, flow depth and discharge can be regarded as a power function each other. In this paper the flow of Bocheong stream basin is experimentally studied. The correlation analysis was performed between observed hydraulic factors by the power type function. The constants resulted from the correlation analysis were calculated by the geomorphologic characteristics of the watershed using the power type function. The correlation coefficients between the hydraulic factors were appeared close to unit having strong correlationship. The two conditions of equality of the continuity equation were analysed, and the conditions were found to be good results. From these results the observed hydraulic data of Bocheong stream basin can be concluded as a reliable data. The correlation coefficients between the parameters of the hydraulic characteristics and geomorphologic factors were found to be close to unit.

  • Continuous recorded hourly rainfalls during the wet season in the Han River basin are separated into single storm events between storms. For the storm events, storm numbers, total rainfall, duration, and intensity are analyzed, and the basin is divided into three areas, which have a similar rainfall characteristics. The criterion of separation of independent storms, which is proposed by Restrepo and Eagleson, is examined and its criterion is compared with temporal characteristics of single storm events separated with wime between storms.

  • Storage function method which considers the non-linearity of the relationship between rainfall and runoff has been frequently used to predict runoff in a basin and a flood pattern. However, it is time-consuming to estimate appropriate parameters of every basin and rainfall event, which requires the empirical parameter equation applicable in Korea. In this study, multiple regression analysis is used to develop empirical equations to estimate parameters of Storage Function method using basin characteristics. The basin area, maximum stream length, and stream slope are considered as the basin characteristics as the result of the regression analysis. Collinearity is removed and trial-and-error method is used to choose the most descriptive parameters to the dependent variables in Han River basin which is divided into 30 subbasins. The developed equations are validated using the rainfall events in MunMak gauging station and named as 'Han River equation'. The equation could provide the useful information about Storage Function method parameter to calculate runoff from a basin and predict river stage.
