Ganoderma lucidum formed uniquely non-basidiocarpous basidiospore (NBB) from the aerial mycelia on agar media without the normal basidiocarps. Light was necessary for NBB formation. Best sporulation was obtained at the periodic exposure of 16 hour light and 8 hour darkness for more than 8 days. Effective wave length was blue and yellow but non sporulation was induced by near U.V. light. Effective light intensity for NBB bearing appeared to be about 1,000 Lux as white light. Photomorphogenetic responses in Ganoderma lucidum were clearly different among strains of the fungus.

In 2017, we collected a wood-decay fungus growing on a dead and decaying herbaceous plant (Reynoutria sachalinensis (F. Schmidt) Nakai) in Dokdo, the far-eastern island of South Korea. Morphologically, this species is characterized by resupinate, coriaceous to corky basidiocarps, poroid hymenophores, pseudodimitic hyphal system, and ellipsoid basidiospores. Based on morphological observation and internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal DNA, the fungus was identified as Xylodon flaviporus (Berk. & M.A. Curtis ex Cooke) Riebesehl & Langer. It is only the second macrofungal species reported from Dokdo, and R. sachalinensis is the first herbaceous plant to be identified as a host for X. flaviporus.
In order to elucidate the systematic taxonomy and genetic characters of Canoderma lucidum, cultural characteristics of the fungus were investigated. Mycelial growth of Ganoderma lucidum were favorable on oat meal agar medium, and optimum temperature and pH of the medium for mycelial growth were $30^{\circ}C$ and 5.5-6.0 respectively. Irradiation of white fluorescent lamp inhibited mycelial growth and critical time for inhibition of mycelial growth was 4-8 hours. Concentric zones and mycelial strands of Ganoderma lucidum was induced by irradiation of white fluorescent lamp and formation of mycelial sectors was influenced by nutrient source of media and irradiation of white fluorescent lamp. These characters were different among the isolates, but no relationship was observed between these characters and the fruiting body type of the fungus. Basidiospores were formed directly from the mycelium cultured on artificial media without producing fruit body.

The context and upper surface of Phellinus basidiocarp become blackened, rimose and woody. The basidiocarp is sessile, dimidiate and elongate. The basidiospores are pigmented and ovoid to globose. Hymenial setae are $17{\sim}35{\times}6{\sim}8{\mu}m$. Nineteen isolates of Phellinus species, including Phellinus linteus, were used for sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the nuclear rDNA. Based on these sequence data, specific primers were designed for identification of Phellinus linteus isolates in Korea. The specific primers were within the ITS1 and ITS2 regions and were nested within the universal primers flanking the spacer regions. A total of four primers (the universal primers ITS-1F and ITS-4, and the specific primers PL-F and PL-R) were used for detection of Phellinus linteus collected in Korea. The length of the four amplification products of Phellinus linteus DNA were 800 bp (ITS-1F/ITS-4), two bands of about 720 bp (ITS-1F/PL-R and PL-F/ITS-4), and 610 bp (PL-F/PL-R). Among 23 isolates of Phellinus species collected in Korea, Thirteen isolates were identified as Phellinus linteus based on the presence of the four bands. The other species produced only the single ITS-1F/ITS-4 product.
Five white fruitbodies of Ganoderma lucidum found from two different mushroom farms, and the characteristics of atypical fruiting structure formation of these strains were described. The white fruitbodies were spontaneously generated on Quercus-log during the cultivation. They did not differentiate to the normal fruitbodies with pileus, hymenium, stipe and coloration, and fruitbodies remained non-laccateed even after 3 months. Dikaryotic mycelia isolated from the five white fruitbodies differed from wild-type strains in the mycelial growth rate, colony color, and the capacity of atypical fruiting structure (AFS) formation on agar media. These white mutants readily induced brown colored AFSs on the colonies under ventilation and illumination conditions. Both isolates Gl-010 and Gl-011 that were obtained from a normal and white fruitbody, respectively, did not form AFSs in the dark and/or under black light blue (BLB) light illumination, but induced under the visible light. They required dim light for the AFS formation, and the AFS formation was inhibited up to $0.5{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;S^{-1}$ in light intensity. However, the other four isolates induced AFSs even in the dark and BLB illumination, although their parent strain, isolate Gl-030, did not form AFSs under any light conditions. The monokaryotic mycelia derived from basidiospores of the AFSs of the white mutants were compatible with the original culture (dikaryon) on a dual culture.
Teliospores of two species of Gymnosporangium asiaticum and G.yamadae collected and identified from Juniperus chinensis, J.chinensis L.var.kaizuka. G.asiaticum was identified as the thick membraned (cell-walled) teliospores (avr 2.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and thin membraned teliospores (avr 1.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), and the telia of G.asiaticum was bluntly conical shaped and occured on the leaves and branches of Chinese junipers. G.yamadae was identified as the thick membraned (cell-walled) teliospores (avr 2.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and thin membraned teliospores (avr 1.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), and the telia of G. yamadae was gall or floral shaped and occured on the leaves and branches of Chinese junipers. Both of the telia of the two species of Gymnosporangium were occurred in a same tree of Juniperus chinensis L. var. kaizuka at the same time. But the dominant species is G. asiaticum. The more rainfall in the late of April (the season of forming basidiospore), the more rust diseases in Chaenomeles sinensis. C. sinensis, and Pyrus pyrifolia var. culta were infected by G. asiaticum (basidiospores) but Malus siebodii was not infected by G.asiaticum.

Dahyang, a CNARES's newly bred cultivar, is a CM061202 strain isolated and selected from 161 single-spores of brown button mushroom. It was selected as a new cultivar after comparison of yield, mycelial growth and quality with No. 705. Mycelial growth of Dahyang on compost extract mushroom complete medium at $25^{\circ}C$ for 15 days was 63mm when it was compared with that of No. 705 with 38mm. The cultivation temperature of Dahyang was 15 to $19^{\circ}C$ which was $2^{\circ}C$ higher than that of No. 705 with 15 to $19^{\circ}C$ cultivated on rice straw bed. The color of pileus of Dahyang was brown. Pinhead producing period was 30 days which is 1 day late than that of No. 705 with 29 days. Dahyang yielded 37% more with $49.1kg/3.3m^2$ than that of No. 705 with $35.8kg/3.3m^2$, respectively. The weight was 16.0g which was heavier than 14.0g of No. 705. The thickness and diameter were also more than those of No. 705. The stipe was shorter and thicker than that of No. 705. Also physical characteristics such as hardness and elasticity were better than that of No. 705.

In order to breed a new Pleurotus eryngii cultivar with a large pileus and convex shape, which are favorite traits of customers from Europe and North America, single crosses between monokaryotic mycelia derived from basidiospores of KNR2555 were performed to yield the new cultivar $2{\times}12$ chosen by cap shape (convex), diameter of pileus (60.7 mm), and quality (4.9) in a preliminary cultivation. The strain was named Gat_aeryni and was cultivated on a large scale for comparison with Kenneutari 2 ho at the GNARES and at mushroom farms. The yield of Gat_aeryni (71.7 g) was not significantly different from that of Kenneutari 2 ho (71.4 g), and the quality of the new cultivar was 6.8, which was not significantly different from that of a reference cultivar (6.5). Days for harvest, length, and diameter of the pileus in the two cultivars were statistically different by an independent t-test (P < 0.001, P < 0.05, P < 0.001 and P < 0.05 respectively). The new and reference cultivars were discriminated by PCR reactions with a primer set (URP1 and URP10) and simultaneous cultivation.
Five basidiocarps of Pholiota species have been collected from the areas of BubJu Temple for last two years, and identified to those of P. adiposa or Pholiota species. The taxonomy of these basidiocarps with the morphological aspects was compared with the analysis obtained from the polymorphisms of PCR-RAPD bands made after reacted with the random primers. The polymorphic variations were observed within the species of the basidiocarps, but not between genomic DNA's of the mycelia obtained and the basidiocarps. Several different bands made from the primers (28 and 36) in PCR-RAPD reactions were identified within the genus of Pholiota and speculated to be specific for the individual basidiocarp of P. adiposa collected. The primers employed here were considered to be very useful for distinguishing the individual isolates or basidiocarps collected from the fields. Also, the basidiospores were obtained from the sporeprints of the above basidiocarps as a simple agar and confirmed with observations of clamp connection under microscopes. The matings of them indicated the 'tetrapolar' type, being different from the 'bipolar' type reported by Japanese basidiocarps of P. adiposa or P. nameko. Based on our work, the edible fungi collected were speculated to be a new breeding resource for those of Pholiota commercialized in Japan.

Lentinula edodes is an important commercial mushroom and there have been several reports of viral infections in L. edodes. Two mycoviruses (LeV-HKB and LeNSRV1) were detected in Sanbaekhyang (NIFoS 2778) and Taehyanggo (NIFoS 4317), the sawdust-cultivated commercial strains. The vertical transmission rates of the viruses were investigated by detecting the viruses in 80 monokaryotic strains derived from basidiospores isolated from the fruiting bodies of each strain. Most of the monokaryotic strains were infected with the virus and the two viruses showed different levels of meiotic stability, with LeV-HKB showing higher meiotic stability than LeNSRV1. Therefore, it seems that the vertical transmission mechanism of mycoviruses is different depending on the virus species. We also examined the mycelial growth rate of the monokaryotic strains and compared the growth rate according to virus infection status. Although there was no statistically significant correlation between viral infection and mycelial growth rate, we found that the average growth rate was reduced by additional virus infection. We expect our data to contribute to a greater understanding of the mechanism of the vertical transmission of mycoviruses, and promoting breeding using virus-free monokaryotic strains.
