By conducting three-dimensional simulation with consideration of small-strain characteristics of soil stiffness, the effects of excavation geometry and tunnel cover to diameter ratio on deformation mechanisms of an existing tunnel located either at a side of basement or directly underneath the basement were systematically studied. Field measurements were used to verify the numerical model and model parameters. For basement excavated at a side of an existing tunnel, the maximum settlement and horizontal displacement of the tunnel are always observed at the tunnel springline closer to basement and tunnel crown, respectively, regardless of basement geometry. By increasing basement length and width by five times, the maximum movements of tunnel located at the side of basement and directly underneath the basement increase by 450% and 186%, respectively. Obviously, tunnel movements are more sensitive to basement length rather than basement width. For basement excavated at a side of an existing tunnel, tunnel movements at basement centerline become stable when basement length reaches 10 He (i.e., final excavation depth). Moreover, tunnel heaves due to overlying basement excavation become stable when the normalized basement length (L/He) is larger than 8.0. As tunnel cover to diameter ratio varies from 2.5 to 3.0, the maximum heave and tensile strain of tunnel due to overlying basement excavation decrease by up to 41.0% and 44.5%, respectively. If basement length is less than 8 He, the assumption of plane strain condition of basement-tunnel interaction grossly overestimates tunnel movements, and ignores tensile strain of tunnel along its longitudinal direction. Thus, three-dimensional numerical analyses are required to obtain a reasonable estimation of tunnel responses due to adjacent and overlying basement excavations in clay.
In this study, a series of three-dimensional numerical parametric study was conducted to investigate deformation mechanisms of an existing box culvert due to an adjacent multi-propped basement excavation in clays. Field measurements from an excavation case history are first used to calibrate a baseline Hardening Soil Small Strain (HS-small) model, which is subsequently adopted for parametric study. Results indicate that the basement-box culvert interaction along the basement centerline can be considered as a plane strain condition when the length of excavation (L) reaches 14 He (i.e., final excavation depth). If a plane strain condition (i.e., L/He=12.0) is assumed for analyzing the basement-box culvert interaction of a short excavation (i.e., L/He=2.0), the maximum settlement and horizontal movement of the box culvert are overestimated significantly by up to 15.7 and 5.1 times, respectively. It is also found that the deformation of box culvert can be greatly affected by the basement excavation if the distance between the box culvert and retaining wall is less than 1.5 He. The induced deformation in the box culvert can be dramatically reduced by improving the ground inside the excavation or implementing other precautionary measures. For example, by adding jet grouting columns within the basement and installing an isolation wall behind the retaining structures, the maximum settlements of box culvert are shown to reduce by 37.2% and 13.4%, respectively.
Two-dimensional gravity and magnetic models were constructed for seismic profiles in Block Ⅵ-2, offshore Korea. For each seismic profile, a longer length model showing geometric configurations of all employed polygonal bodies and an expanded version of the area of interests were made. The results of this modeling study indicate 1) that the depth to the deeper basement surface appear to be shallower than indicated in the seismic sections, 2) that the Middle Miocene section (the bottom formations in the models) appears to contain significant amounts of volcanic materials, 3) that identification and/or determination of depth to the top of basement is difficult in the study area due to thick volcanic materials in the lowermost formation (Middle Miocene), and 4) that the study area is unfavorable for hydrocarbon generation and accumulation due to wide spread volcanic activities during the Middle Miocene Epoch. The maximum calculated depth to the magnetic basement in the study area is approximately $4{\cal}km$ sub-sea.

The ultrastructure of the trachea of the compound eye in adult cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae L., was studied. Trachea under the basement membrane is divided into tracheoles of the ommatidia which blanched 4 tracheoles during 2 divisions. Tracheoles of the ommatidia originated from one tracheolar cell and its nuclear is located under the basement membrane and its cytoplasm enveloped the retinular cell and the retinular pigment cell. The modified structure of tracheoles is located at the first division area of the ommatidia and its size is $8{\mu}mX4.5{\mu}m$. And the length of its taenidium is $0.1{\sim}0.6{\mu}m$, diameter $0.15{\mu}m$, and interval $0.3{\mu}m$.
The cover plate and the building loads often make the semi-covered deep excavations with existing buildings bearing asymmetric load, presenting different deformation characteristics with normal excavations, which is not absolutely clear in current studies. Based on a typical engineering, the building storeys, the basement storeys, the pile length, the existence of the cover plate (CP) and the depth of the diaphragm walls (DW) were selected as variables, and 44 groups of simulation were designed to study the influence of existing buildings and the semi-covered supporting system on the deformation of the excavations. The results showed that the maximum lateral displacement of DW, δhm, and the depth of δhm, Hm, are affected seriously by the building storeys and the basement storeys. Asymmetric structures and loading lead to certain lateral displacement of DW at the beginning of excavation, resulting in different relationships between δhm and excavation depth, H. The maximum surface settlement outside the pit, δvm, increases significantly and the location, dm, moves away from the pit with the building storeys increases. δvm has a quadratic correlation with H due to the existing buildings. CP and building load will affect the style of the lateral displacement curve of DW seriously in different aspects.
The adult brown planthopper possesses tow oval shaped compound eyes which, on their ventral borders, curve around the base of the antennae. Compound eye of the adult brown planthopper is recognised apposition eye which each ommatidium is optically isolated from it surroundings, the rhabdoms receiving light only from their own corneal lens. Each ommatidium possesses its own dioptric apparatus formed from the cuticular cornea and an underlying crystalline cone. The retinula cells lying immediately beneath the crystalline cone have their individual rhabdomeres tightly opposed to form one central, closed rhbdom. The rhabdom stretches from the spex of the crystalline cone nearly to the basement membrane and is approximately 110~120 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in length. The crystalline cone is surrounded by a pair of primary pigment cells an these in turn are surrounded by accessory pigment cells. Accessory pigment cells extend beyond the crystalline cone surrounding the retinular cells in the distal region of the eye. The crystalline cone is surrounded by the distal-most regions of the retinula cells show the presence of seven cells and sections taken proximally in the last quarter of the omatidium before the basement membrane is reached, reveal the presence of a small, eighth retinula cell which also contributes to the central rhabdom. Each ommatidium has a central rhabdom formed from the modified inner border of all of the retinula cells. Th rhabdom consists of micrvilli arising from the inner wall of each retinula cell. In cross section th microvilli exhibit a characteristic honeycomb appearance. Pigment cells comprise the primary pigment cells enveloping the crystalline cone, the accessory pigment cells extending from the inner surface of the comea to the basement membrane and the small pigment cells of the basement membrane.
The influence of eating habits and food type on the ultrastructural characteristics of the digestive tracts was studied under the scanning and transmission electron microscopes in two crustacean decapods (Hemigrapsus penicillatus De Haan; mud crab, Pinnotheres cyclinus Shen; symbiotic crab). The relative ratio of the length of midgut versus hindgut was 1:1 in the mud crab, but 4:1 in the symbiotic crab. Observation through the scanning electron microscope revealed that the midguts of both species have densely-arranged longitudinal mucosal folds with a smooth surface. In the hindgut of the mud crab, mucosal folds were longitudinally oriented, clusters of two to five spines were observed on the cuticular surface, and the length of the spine in the distal hindgut was longer than that in the proximal portion. In the symbiotic crab, the mucosal folds were irregulary arranged, and numerous rudimentary spinal structures were noted on the cuticular surface. Through observation of a transmission electron microscope, the epithelial cells of the midgut in both species had numerous microvilli, but the length of the microvilli was slightly longer in the mud crab than in the symbiotic crab. The central layer of the basement membrane and the muscular layer of the midgut were more developed in the mud crab than in the symbiotic crab. The thickness of the cuticular layer over the hindgut surface in the mud crab was about 4 times than that of the symbiotic crab.

This paper presents the continuous hoop reinforcement method as a means to overcome the difficulty of rebar construction due to the seismic detail of lateral reinforcement. Because the continuous hoop has no seismic hook, and there is less interference during the rebar work, rebar quantities and construction time can be reduced. Since the details of column and beam continuous hoops are different from those of conventional lateral reinforcements, the construction method should be developed through mock-up tests. The length of the beam mock-up is 8m and the section size is $500mm{\times}700mm$, the height of the column mock-up is 2.8m and 4m, and the section size is $800{\times}800mm$. The length and the size are determined based on the elements that are generally used in reinforced concrete basement parking lots and office buildings. The results of the mock-up test showed that the quantities of rebar could be reduced by 20% and the time could be reduced by up to 40% compared with conventional lateral reinforcements.

Rebar work accounts for approximately 30% of the total construction costs for rebars and concrete. Recently, the high rising prices of rebars have become one of the principle factors of rising construction costs. Therefore, construction companies are putting much effort into loss reduction of rebars. Consequently, in this study, we wished to present loss reduction methods of rebars before the preparation of the placing drawings. To devise such methods, we collected previous case studies and analyzed methods that were applied for loss reduction. As a result of the analysis, we were able to find the following methods for loss reduction of rebars: method of reducing the number of splices at the mat foundation, method of reducing splice length at the internal columns or walls of the underground parking lot, method of reducing cap-ties of internal beams of basement floors excluding perimeter beams, and method of reducing anchorage length at the internal column or wall of the underground parking lot. Based on those analysis results, we presented our own loss reduction methods of rebars. Applying our methods resulted in considerable loss reduction.
